A) In chapter 2 of our textbook racialization is defined as, ‘the expectations, assumptions,

perceptions, stereotypes, and fears that we may individually have of a racial or ethnic
group.
B) A teacher’s culture most definitely will influence how their students may get racialized.
As stated above, racialization is comprised of preconceived ideas or expectations of a
racial or ethnic group. These preconceived notions don’t come from thin air, they come
from the teacher’s experiences, both direct and indirect. Direct relationships being
those in which she has encountered someone of a different racial or ethnic group.
Indirect experiences are experiences that weren’t firsthand. This could be anything from
listening to other stories to taking in other ideas that are in a teacher’s environment,
such as family or coworkers. A teacher’s cultural characteristics does not only influence
but is the core of racialization. In summary, any person is going to act and behave based
on their environment which is greatly impacted by cultural characteristics.
C) The important societal factor that has impacted students the most is the household
dynamic. This has been observed the most because during my zoom calls I actually get
an insight to their homes. This has definitely had an impact on students learning
because they are being forced to learn in these distracting and very diverse situations. I
have observed a few things that seem to be troublesome for the students learning. My
first day I noticed a student was in his closet. Although I don’t know the reason as to
why he was in there, it cannot be the best situation for him to learn in. I also observed a
6th grade student taking care of her baby sister. Whether she wanted to take care of the
baby or needed to due to a lack of childcare is unknown, however it is most definitely
not in her best learning interest. I have also seen people learning in the same room as
siblings, having to stop class to talk to a parent, and even kids that just haven’t gotten
out of bed yet. Overall, home provides many distractions, especially when the main
content is being received at home in a form of technology.
D) Vygotsky’s theory describes how students need to learn and develop in social settings
that are typically produced through group work. I was placed into a breakout group in
zoom and it was extremely challenging to carry out these group activities due to issues
of students taking care of siblings and poor internet connection. This helps argue the
importance of in person schooling because students need this social interaction while
learning content in order to develop in a natural way.
