Model Question Paper
(Common to all branches)

Time: 3 Hours. MAX.MARKS: 50

1A) Sketch and label Babcock & Wilcox boiler. (05)

1B) A gear train consists of 5 gears A, B, C, D and E. Gear wheels D& A are
integral and concentric as well as gear wheels C & E . Gear C is keyed to the
driving shaft, and drives gear D. Gear A meshes with gear B, which is keyed
to the driven shaft. The wheels A, B, C, D and E have 15, 30, 20, 40 & 50
teeth respectively. If the driving gear runs at 400rpm find the speed of the
driven shaft and also sketch the arrangement of gears. (05)
2A) A four cylinder two stroke petrol engine develops total brake power of 30kW
at 2500 RPM. The mean effective pressure on each cylinder is 8 bar and (05)
mechanical efficiency is 80%. Calculate the diameter and stroke of each
cylinder, if stroke to bore ratio is 1.5. Also calculate the total fuel
consumption of the engine, if brake thermal efficiency is 28%. The calorific
value of the fuel is 44 MJ/kg.
2B) Explain the principle of working of a reaction steam turbine with suitable (05)
pressure - velocity diagram.
3A) Equal quantities of steam is supplied to a mixing chamber from two boilers
through two pipe connections. One boiler supplies steam which is 10% wet
and the other boiler supplies superheated steam at 3250C. The steam pressure
in both the boilers is 15 bar . Determine the quality and temperature of
steam in the mixing chamber. (05)
3B) Write a neat sketch of an engine lathe and label its parts. (05)
4A) With neat sketch explain radial drilling machine. (04)
4B) With neat diagram explain arc welding process. (03)
4C) Explain with the neat sketch the working of a 2-stroke Spark Ignition engine. (03)

5A) Explain the steps involved in preparing a sand mould using split pattern with (04)
sketches.
5B) Compare annealing and normalizing heat treatment processes. (03)
5C) Sketch and explain the main components of a refrigerator. (03)
