IV. Background Information for Learners/ Panimula (Susing Konsepto)
(Brief discussion of the lesson, if possible, cite example)
 Modal is a verb that combines with another verb to indicate mood
of tense. It is also known as a modal auxiliary or modal verb
expresses necessity, uncertainty, possibility or permission. Now this
time, we will be focusing on modals expressing permission.
 When we say obligation, it is something by which a person is bound
or obliged to do certain things, and which arises out of duty or
results from custom, law, and etc.
 Modal Verbs of Obligation that primarily express a Firm Obligation
or Necessity are the following: must, have to, have got to, and
need to.
IV- Activities:

 Activity 1
Usage:

Use “must” to talk about obligations. Often, when we use “must”, the
authority for the obligation comes from the person whom is speaking.

1 Learning Activity Sheet

Use “have to” to talk about rules and obligation. The authority of obligation
doesn’t come from the person who is speaking. Perhaps the rule is a general
law or obligation.

Use “have got to” to talk about rules and obligation. It is stronger than “have
to”. It expresses necessity and obligation.

Use “need to” to talk about what is necessary.

 Pattern:

 Use must + infinitive (the basic form of the verb, without an

inflection binding it to a particular subject or tense).

Examples:

1. “You must do your homework every night.”

Meaning: (Because I say you must!)

2. “I must stop smoking!”

Meaning: (Because I think it’s a good idea to stop.)

 Use have to + infinitive

Examples:
1. “You have to pay taxes.”
Meaning: (Because it is a law that you are obliged to pay for
all your taxes)

2. “You have to wear your mask most of the time.”

Meaning: (Because it is mandated)

 Use have got to+ infinitive

Examples:
1. “They have got to study hard to pass the exam.”
Meaning: (obliged to study to pass the exam)

2. “I have got to fill in this form. The deadline is tomorrow.”
