MODULE 1
Introduction to Media and Information Literacy
Introduction:
In this module, we are going to explore the ins and outs of Media and Information
Literacy AKA (MIL); in particular, these are the topics that we will cover for now:
1. Media Literacy
2. Information Literacy
3. Technology Literacy
OBJECTIVES:
2. Sender – The very first step/stage in the process of communication and is the very foundation of
communication process is laid by the person who transmits or sends the message. He is the sender of
the message which may be a thought, idea, a picture, symbol, report or an order and postures and
gestures, even a momentary smile. The sender is therefore the initiator of the message that need to be
transmitted. After having generated the idea, information etc. the sender encodes it in such a manner
that can be well-understood by the receiver.
3. Message – another term for the information you want to relay. Message is the heart of communication.
It is the content the sender wants to covey to the receiver. It can be verbal both written and spoken;
or non-verbal i.e. pictorial or symbolic, etc.
4. Channel - t h e channel is the way/method you choose to convey your message to your receivers. The
message is transmitted over a channel that links the sender with the receiver. The message may be oral
or written and it may be transmitted through a memorandum, a computer, telephone, cell phone, apps
or televisions. Since each channel has its advantages and disadvantages, the choice of proper selection
of the channel is paramount for effective communication.
5. Receiver - This refers to the “information’s audience”. He may be a listener, a reader or a viewer. Any
negligence on the part of the receiver may make the communication ineffective. The receiver needs to
comprehend the message sent in the best possible manner such that the true intent of the
communication is attained. The extent to which the receiver decodes the message depends on his/her
knowledge of the subject matter of the message, experience, trust and relationship with the sender. The
receiver is as significant a factor in communication process as the sender is. It is the other end of the
process. The receiver should be in fit condition to receive the message, that is, he/she should have

channel of communication active and should not be preoccupied with other thoughts that might cause
him/her to pay insufficient attention to the message.
6. Media - the communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or data. The term
refers to components of the mass media communications industry, such as print media, publishing,
the news media, photography, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television), and advertising.
7. Information - the attribute inherent in and communicated by one of two or more alternative sequences or
arrangements of something (such as nucleotides in DNA or binary digits in a computer program) that
produce specific effects. Basically, something (such as a message, experimental data, or a picture) which
justifies change in a construct (such as a plan or theory) that represents physical or mental experience or
another construct.
8. Literacy - competence or knowledge in a specified area. It is also the ability to identify, understand,
interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying
contexts.

such as social media or social networking sites. At the same time, you might wonder: “What is

TRIVIA/GLOSSARY OF TERMS
1. Traditional Media - covers the kind of media that were introduced to the market prior to the invention
of the internet. This includes all kinds of written or print media like newspapers and magazines. Comics
and books are also included in print media. Photographs especially those printed in newspapers or
magazines are also included in this subcategory.
2. Broadcast Media – pertains to electronic media that uses electricity and technology to deliver the
message or information. This includes radio and television. The messages are broken down into waves
which are then transmitted on a broad range via sound waves or airwaves. Our radio sets or television
sets receive the electronic transmission and converts the information into the radio show or television
show that we follow.
3. Film or Cinema – pertains to the movies that carry audiovisual messages and are usually projected on a
huge screen in theaters or movie houses. Movies that are now digitally converted can also be played
back using technology like DVD players. Most of the movies we know serve an entertainment purpose,
but watching films is also a way of learning about stories of different stories of different human
conditions.
4. New Media – was a term coined to refer to media that developed when the use of computer technology
became ordinary and common in most parts of the world. The computer is not exactly the media being
referred to with his term, but it encompasses computer-originated and usually Internet-delivered
information. Thus any kind of information and communication technology (ICT) products or systems is
considered as a part of new media.
7. Social Media – is a subcategory developed in leaps and bounds. Social media refers to Internet-
maintained computer programs that could be installed in personal computers or portable devices, the
sole purpose of which is to connect with other people using the same platform. This involves signing up
for a personal account in social networking websites like Facebook or installing mobile apps like
Instagram in mobile phones and tablets.
8. Virtual Reality (VR) – is one of the latest crazes in media technologies today. While it is not necessarily a
new invention, VR technologies today make it possible for average people to access these once very
high-tech devices. VR simply means you wear specially designed headset that is attached to a computer
system, and it is like stepping inside the world of whatever it is you are watching/playing. You can
basically see and interact with the simulated virtual world.
10. Mixed Reality – (MR) is another enhancement that uses the principles of augmented reality. However,
the difference is that the MR images are not laid over the entire screen, as with Pokémon Go. The MR
images can detect the real-world scenery better, so elemnts of the MR can interact better with the real
world.
