DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY
ROLES OF MEDIA
Crispin Maslog, a communicator educator, Philippine Communication: An Introduction(2007)
categorizes these roles into political, economic and sociocultural.
UNESCO(2011)
Also highlights the important role of media and information in a democratic society, especially in
promoting and protecting people’s right to communicate, access information and engage in social
and civic activities.
1.POLITICAL- The media disseminate information to make people aware about governments,
wars, political conflicts, elections and other developments in the country and abroad.
-These pieces of information may create public opinion which Filipinos discuss in social media.
2.ECONOMIC- The media and the Internet play an economic role in so far as they promote
consumerism or entice buyers to purchase products and/or avail themselves of services that meet
their needs and desires.
-Some advertisements also encourage people to deposit money in banks and invest in properties,
insurance and other business ventures.
3.SOCIOCULTURAL- Media in forms of tv shows, movies, videos and some Facebook and
Instagram posts, promote culture, through norms, beliefs, values, superstitions,
technologies, fashions, songs, dances, food and lingo among others.
MEDIA AS THE FOURTH BRANCH
OF THE GOVERNMENT
The media is sometimes referred to as the fourth branch of the government because of its role in
informing the public and influencing the political process. However, this is not an official or legal
term, but rather a rhetorical device or an analogy. The media is not part of the government, but
rather an independent institution that is supposed to act as a watchdog and a check on the power of
the three branches: the legislative, the executive, and the judiciary. The media is also considered as
the fourth estate of democracy because it is essential for the healthy functioning of a democratic
society by providing information, education, and mobilization to the citizens.
QUESTIONS:
1.What are some examples of how the media has influenced or challenged the government in your
country or in other countries?
2.How do you evaluate the credibility and reliability of different media sources?
3.What are some of the benefits and challenges of having a free and independent media?
MEDIA ROLE’S IN A DEMOCRATIC
SOCIETY
Communication media

redress for their grievances
-Free flow of information, people will be able to participate in democratic processes and engage in
socio-civic activities.
INFORMATION EXPLOSION- Media, Internet and other information providers are drivers of
this phenomenon which refers to the availability of enormous amounts of information, often in real
time from different sources. But how will we we access, organize, evaluate, use and communicate
these pieces of information?( BY MIL)
