INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the World of Media and Information! You and I belong to this World of Interaction. May we learn and enjoy as we interact with one another.
For this lesson, the first two (2) hours will be spent on the presentation and discussion of the key concepts in media and information. The next hour will be allotted for the completion of the
expository essay for the PAA/EAA.
Furthermore, the knowledge you gain from learning the topic/lesson at the end of the lesson will enable you to:
1. describe how media and information affect communication;
2. identify the similarities and differences of media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy; and
3. cite ways on how to use media and information responsibly.
You might ask in what context where you can apply your learning. Certainly, you will develop the proper perspective for self-expression through media and the judicious use of media and
information in communication. In the long run, this will also facilitate the accomplishment of your Preparatory Assessment Activity (PAA), which is the Concept Proposal.

To accomplish this, we have to talk about very important topics in the coming days. Your teacher may have a short presentation of communication for you to fully grasp the first topic. Hence, get
ready for the following:
When we talk about media, we usually associate it with newspapers, television news reports, news reporters, or even journalists and eventually relate it with social media. Media, which
comes from the medium (channel or method), may also relate to mass media, which reaches a large number of people. We use media to spread knowledge, information, and news from one part
of the world to the other. We also use media to educate people to know about their basic rights and how to use them. It provides a link between the government and the people because all the
policies and activities of the government are conveyed through the media. Media and information facilitate the process of communication.
One most effective use of media is on communication. Media facilitates sharing of information across the globe. A piece of information is knowledge communicated or received about a
particular fact or circumstance. It is a form of facts, data, numbers, images, documents, sound, or act of a person to be delivered to the recipient in order to explain, inform and verify that the
recipient may use such information for any particular purpose. Media shares this information to keep people aware and updated on important events and happenings. Media transmits this
information, for example, to establish our business to sell and purchase goods and services online, to do and submit our school work, and to ask for clarification from our classmates or teachers.
Usually, media and information go hand in hand since media would contain information and is used for communication. Therefore, media and information facilitate communication. It
is simply sending and receiving information in its various forms, like when we express our views with other people on social media, or we use our cellular phones when we send messages to our
friends. Imagine our world without communication brought about by the use of media and information. It will be totally difficult as our engagement with others will be slower, less effective, less
efficient, and of course, less enjoyable. We will all be affected by the way we think and function as humans. For sure, we as modern people would not want it that way.
Now that you know how communication is affected by media and information, through the essay above. You can answer the formative question.
As your course, MIL aims to develop you to be creative and critical thinkers as well as responsible users and competent producers of media and information. To further deepen your
understanding of key terms in MIL, you will now be introduced to the second essay.
FORMATIVE QUESTION: What are the similarities and differences between media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy?
PRIVATE EDUCATION ASSISTANCE COMMITTEE
In preparation for college, the world of work, and even in adult years, students have to develop skills necessary for them to function effectively and efficiently. These 21st-century skills
include but are not limited to creativity, problem-solving, social skills, information literacy, technology, and digital literacy. As human activities progress, many skills should be enhanced to cater
to the demands in school, at home, and in the workplace. Students should develop certain literacies or specialized skills like media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy.
Information literacy includes the ability to identify, find, evaluate, and use information effectively in situations requiring decision-making, problem-solving, or the acquisition of knowledge.
Students who always spend most of their time giving and receiving information should know how to use it well. If they are information literate individuals, they can locate information, judge its
truthfulness and accuracy and use it appropriately in various situations. They can answer their assignments well through careful research, verifying if the information comes from a trusted source
or from a credible person.
It is not enough that students aim to be information literate since information should be transmitted using a medium or a channel. They have to possess media literacy which is an ability
to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in a variety of forms. Some students have been exposed to various media forms: books, magazines, newspapers, television, movies, video games,
music, cell phones, various kinds of software, and the Internet. With these, their doing their school activities or tasks is well facilitated, especially in doing their performance tasks. However, they
have to remember to use any media form carefully and appropriately.
As students' experiences tend to evolve, especially with their constant use of the Internet, they are also exposed to gadgets that enable them to use information more effectively and
efficiently. They have acquired an ability to assess, acquire and communicate information in a fully digital environment. Technology literacy has enabled them to make well-informed choices in
their role as consumers. They learn enough about a product to put it to good use or choose not to use it. In other words, they can judge the appropriateness of the product based on their need
or purpose, especially in communication.
To sum up, students should possess information, media, and technology literacies. They need to recognize when information is needed and to locate, evaluate, effectively use and
communicate information in its various formats. They need the ability to read, analyze, evaluate and produce communication in a variety of media forms. Finally, they need the ability to effectively
use technology to access, evaluate, integrate, create and communicate information to enhance their learning. Without media and information literacy across the varied types of media and
technology now available, students cannot act as responsible citizens, digital or otherwise.
Now you have a clear understanding of the similarities and differences between these terms: media literacy, information literacy, and technology literacy through an expository essay above. To
illustrate your understanding, you may do this simple exercise: https://docs.google.com.
To further deepen your understanding as a media and information user or even producer, you will now be introduced to the third essay.
FORMATIVE QUESTION: What specific action do you take to show that you are a responsible user of media and information?

Media has evolved through the years, making our lives easier. One of the most effective uses of media is for communication. Media plays a significant role in sharing information across
the globe. It keeps us aware and updated on important events and happenings. Different forms and types of media can be found everywhere, and as a result, we can easily access information
with just one click.
Most of us are users of social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, and the list of possible platforms continues to expand. Social media use or internet
use is a typical part of most of our daily lives. Hence, we must be aware of the responsible use and navigation of these various platforms. Since we can do so much with the use of media, we
should also learn how to use it properly.
To become responsible media users, we must follow netiquette, which refers to using courtesy and politeness when communicating with others online. We must make sure that our
identification is clear in all communications. Furthermore, we should also review what we wrote and try to interpret it objectively. We must keep in mind that whatever is on the Internet can
already be found everywhere. If we post something and others have already seen it, our actions can no longer be undone. This is why we must be careful of what we share online, especially if it
is something that could put our safety or security at risk.
We must put our ability to access media to good use. Instead of being careless about what we upload and dish out online, we could use media positively by sharing information that could
be helpful to ourselves and our society. We could do this by being mindful of the content we create and consume. Before posting something online, we must ask ourselves how it can benefit us
and our target audience. We must make sure that everything we share is factual and beneficial to others. Moreover, as responsible media users, we should utilize media to connect and
communicate with others, to stay aware of current events and what is going on in the world, and to make community impact content.
Media has been a part of our daily lives from the time we wake up and before we go to sleep. It is nearly impossible to stay off these platforms for good. For this reason, we need to learn how to
be responsible users so that we can get its full benefits and safeguard ourselves from facing any trouble that goes with its misuse.
One way to be a responsible media user is to be able to evaluate your information sources. You will be guided on how to do that using this checklist: https://docs.google.com.
