THE CAR ACCIDENT SCENE

1 WATCH THE VIDEO AND PUT THE VERBS IN BRACKETS IN THE CORRECT
TENSE
Sometimes we’re on a collision course, and we just don’t know it. Whether it’s by accident
or by design, there’s not a thing we can do about it:
*A woman in Paris WAS (be) on her way to go shopping, but SHE HAD FORGOTTEN
(forget) her coat ---went back to get it. When she HAD GOTTEN (get) her coat, the phone
HAD RUNG (ring), so she’d stopped to answer it; talked for a couple of minutes.
* While the woman WAS (be) on the phone, Daisy WAS REHEARSING (rehearse) for a
performance at the Paris Opera House. And while she WAS REHEARSING (rehearse),
the woman, off the phone now, HAD GONE (go) outside to get a taxi.
* Now a taxi driver HAD DREPPET (drop off) a fare earlier and HAD STTOPET (stop)
to get a cup of coffee. And all the while, Daisy WAS REHEARSING (rehearse). And this
cab driver, who dropped off the earlier fare; who’d STOPPET (stop) to get the cup of
coffee, HAD PICK UP (pick up) the lady who was going to shopping, and MISSED
(miss) getting an earlier cab.
* The taxi HAD (have) to stop for a man crossing the street, who HAD LEFT (leave) for
work five minutes later than he normally DID (do), because he FORGOTTEN (forget) to
set off his alarm. While that man, late for work, WAS CROSSING (cross) the street, Daisy
HAD FINISHED (finish) rehearsing, and WAS TACKING (take) a shower. And while
Daisy WAS SHOWERING (shower), the taxi WAS WAITING (wait) outside a boutique
for the woman to pick up a package, which hadn’t been wrapped yet, because the girl who
was supposed to wrap it HAD BROKEN UP (break up) with her boyfriend the night
before, and FORGOT (forget).
*When the package was wrapped, the woman, who WAS (be) back in the cab, was blocked
by a delivery truck, all the while Daisy WAS GETTING DRESSED (get dressed). The
delivery truck PULLED AWAY (pull away) and the taxi was able to move, while Daisy,
the last to be dressed, WAITED (wait) for one of her friends, who BROKEN (break) a
shoelace.
*While the taxi was stopped, waiting for a traffic light, Daisy and her friend COME GUT
(come) out the back of the theater. And if only one thing had happened differently…….
2 Use the prompts to make sentences using third conditional saying what it would
have saved Daisy from the car accident
Shoelace break - delivery truck move moments earlier - package wrap and ready - the girl
break up with her boyfriend - man set his alarm and get up five minutes earlier - taxi driver
stop for a cup of coffee - woman remembered her coat and get into an earlier cab - Daisy
and her friend cross

 If her friend hadn´t broken up the shoelace, Daisy wouldn´t have the car accident.
 If the delivery had moved earlier, Daisy wouldn´t have the car accident.
 If Daisy had just packaged wrap and ready she would have saved from the car
accident.
 If the girl hadn’t broken up with her boyfriend Daisy would had saved from the car
accident.
 If the man set up his alarm and get up five minutes earlier the taxis wouldn´t have to
stop.
 If the taxi driver hadn´t stop for a cup off coffee Daisy would have saved from the
car accident.
 If the woman remembered her coat and get into an earlier cab it would saved Daisy
from the car accident.
 If Daisy would have saved from the car accident, she and her friend hadn´t crossed.

But life being what it is - a series of intersecting lives and incidents, out of anyone’s control
- that taxi did not go by, and that driver was momentarily distracted, and that taxi hit Daisy,
and her leg was crushed.”
