Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) Compare the actual cycles and fuel-air cycles of S.I. Engine?
(b) Mention various simplified assumptions used in fuel-air cycle analysis. [16]

2. (a) Explain Willan’s line method of determination of Frictional power and explain
why this method is not used for petrol engines.
(b) A four stroke diesel engine consumes 4.2 kg. of fuel per hour when sunning
at 650 spm. The engine dimensions are 100 mm bore and 155 mm stroke. If
the spring height is 4.5 mm with spring index of 1.1 bar/mm. Calculate IP,
BP, mechanical efficiency and brake thermal efficiency if CV of fuel is 44000
KJ/kg. [16]

3. Represent the heating and humidification process and cooling and dehumidification
processes on pychrometric chart and explain how to achieve those process. [16]

4. (a) Under what circumstances would you recommend the use of multistage com-
pressor. [5+6]
(b) Explain with a neat sketch, the working of a vane blower? [5]

5. (a) How does the mixture of air and fuel in the combustion chamber of C.I engine
differ from that of S.I engines? What are the reason for operating a C.I engines
at considerably higher A:F ratio compared to the chemically correct mixture?
(b) What is the range of overall A/F ratios in a C.I engine combustion chamber?
(c) Does the flame front exist in a C.I engines? Why [16]

6. (a) Compare normal combustion phenomenon in S.I. and C.I. Engines.

(b) Why an “Objectionable smoke-zone” is encountered in C.I. Engine operation
under certain conditions - explain. [16]

7. (a) What is the effect of intake altitude and clearance on the performance of
reciprocating air compressor?
(b) A single stage single acting compressor delivers 15m3 of free air per minute
from 100kPa to 800kPa. The speed of compressor is 300rpm. Assuming
that compression and expansion follow the law P V 13 =C and the clearance
as 1/16t h of swept volume, find the diameter and stroke of the compressor.
Take L=1.5D. The temperature and pressure of air at the suction are same as
that of atmospheric air. [4+12]

8. (a) Derive the expression for COP of vapour compression refrigeration system
interms of enthalpies?
(b) Explain effects of under cooling and super heating. [8+8]
