B. Tech-III (Mechanical Engineering) 6th Semester
End Semester Examination (EVEN SEM) (May-2021)

Subject – Internal Combustion Engine and Automobile Engineering

Time: 09:30 am – 12:30 pm Maximum Marks: 50

Q.1: Attempt any two

I. For an engine working on the ideal Dual cycle, the compression ratio is 10 and the
maximum pressure is limited to 75 bar. If the heat supplied is 1700 kJ/kg, find the
pressures and temperatures at the various salient points of the cycle and the cycle
efficiency. The pressure and temperature of air at the commencement of compression are
1 bar and 90°C respectively. Assume Cp = 1.004 kJ/kg K and Cv = 0.717 kJ/kg K for air.
(5)
II. A diesel engine operating on the air-standard Diesel cycle has six cylinders of 100 mm
bore and 120 mm stroke. The engine speed is 2400 rpm. At the beginning of compression
the pressure and temperature of air are 1 bar and 30°C. If the clearance volume is 1/8th of
the stroke volume, calculate (i) the pressure and temperature at the salient points of the
cycle (ii) the compression ratio (iii) the efficiency of the cycle and (iv) the power output
if the air is heated to 1600°C Assume Cp and Cv of air to be 1.004 and 0.717 kJ/kg K
respectively. (5)
III. A four-stroke gas engine has a cylinder diameter of 30 cm and stroke 50 cm. The
effective diameter of the brake is 1.7 m. The observations made in a test of the engine
were as follows:

Duration of test = 40 min

Total number of revolutions = 8080
Total number of explosions = 3230
Net load on the brake = 100 kg
Mean effective pressure = 6.5 bar
Volume of gas used = 7.5 m3
Pressure of gas indicated in meter = 136 mm water of gauge
Atmospheric temperature = 17 ◦C
Calorific value of gas = 20 MJ/ m3 at NTP
Rise in temperature of jacket cooling water = 45 ◦C
Cooling water supplied = 180 kg
Draw up a heat balance sheet and estimate the indicated thermal efficiency and brake
thermal efficiency. Assume atmospheric pressure as 760 mm of Hg. (5)

Q.2: Attempt any two

I. Find the percentage increase in the efficiency of a Diesel cycle having a compression
ratio of 16 and cut-off ratio is 10% of the swept volume, if Cv decreases by 2%. Take Cv
= 0.717 and γ = 1.4. (5)
II. Discuss the effect of variable specific heats and dissociation in fuel-air cycle analysis.

down factor (5)

Q.3: Attempt any two

justification. (5)
II. Develop an expression for air-fuel ratio for a simple carburetor with diagram. (5)
III. Find the choke diameter of a carburetor for a 4-stroke engine of 1500 cc capacity that
generates maximum power at 6000 rpm when the air speed in choke is 100 m/s. The
volumetric efficiency of the engine is 0.8 and the air-fuel ratio is 14:1. Assume venturi
discharge coefficient as 0.8 and that of main jet as 0.65. The diameter of emulsion tube is
one-third of the choke tube dia. Take specific gravity of fuel as 0.75, pa=1 bar and
Ta=300 K. (5)

they help in reducing HC, CO and NOx emissions? (5)
