1. GENERAL:
There will be three numbers of Horizontal Centrifugal Pumps, to be operated as Raw Water
Pumps. Out of these three, two Pumps will be working and one will remain as Standby. The
Pump along with its associated accessories can either be operated in ‘Sequential’ mode or in
‘Individual mode’.
In Individual mode the Pump and the associated accessories are operated individually where as in
Sequential mode, once a start signal is initiated the Pump and its associated accessories operate in
a sequence.
The start / stop commands of all associated auxiliaries / drives including the Motor operated
Discharge Valve shall be routed through DDCMIS (NTPC’s scope) where all the interlocks &
permissives shall be implemented and start / stop signals shall be issued to MCC / Switchgear.
For Local operation, Operator Work Station (NTPC’s Scope of Supply) will be provided in the
RW Pump House Control Room.
One Local Push Button Switch (WPIL’s Scope of Supply) for each Pump shall be used for
emergency tripping.
The operation of Raw Water Pump sets with Auxiliaries can be carried out in two possible modes
viz. SEQUENTIAL & INDIVIDUAL. A suitable Selector Switch will have to be provided in the
OWS for this purpose.
In the Sequential mode, the operation of the Pump (start / stop) with its associated Suction &
Discharge Butter Fly Valves (open / close) of the RW System take place in a sequence
automatically from OWS or DDCMIS / PLC, if certain preconditions, required for Sequential
mode of operation, as detailed later, are satisfied. A Local / Remote Selector Switch will be there
in OWS for operating the Pump either of these two locations.
In the Individual mode the Pump from OWS and the Pump Suction & Discharge Valves can be
operated either from OWS or from Control Panel of PDV, depending on Local / Remote selection
at PDV Panel. This is done with a view to permit pre-commissioning checks & trials of individual
equipment. However essential features for Sequential starting / stopping / tripping remain
applicable for Individual mode also.
3. PERMISSIVE FOR PUMP STARTING:
3.1. Irrespective of the fact that the Pump is selected to operate either in Individual mode or in
Sequential mode at-least one of the three Butter Fly Valves leading to the Common Suction
Header of the RW Pumps must be in open condition.
3.2. Emergency Push Button must not be in actuated position.
3.3. Protective Relay for the Motor must not be in ‘Tripped’ condition.
3.4. For Individual mode of operation the Mode Selector Switch must be in ‘Individual’ position.
3.5. For Sequential mode of operation the Mode Selector Switch must be in ‘Sequential’ position.
As already indicated in Clause 3.1, at-least one of the three Butter Fly Valves must be in 100%
open position, before initiation of Pump starting activities. If no such BFV is ‘open’ at the time of
Switching on the Pump, one will have to be opened before carrying out any other activities. Once
the Butter Fly Valve opens fully, and the Mode Selector Switch is kept in ‘Individual’ mode, an
Indication lamp – ‘Pump Permissive in Individual Mode’ will appear.
4.1. Suction Butter Fly Valve for the particular Pump will have to be opened. (At-least one of the
three Butter Fly Valves leading to the common Suction Header is already open as per clause
3.1 above)
4.2. Once the Butter Fly Valve opens 100%, the Pump will have to be switched ON.
4.3. As soon as the Pump is Switched ‘ON’, opening signal to its Discharge Butter Fly Valve will
have to be given.
Note: Individual mode of operation should normally be used only during trial operation at the
commissioning stage or during maintenance period. For regular operation of Pumps, Sequential
mode should be used.
Once all the Permissive conditions for Sequential Mode of Operation, as described in Clause 3
above, are satisfied an Indication lamp – ‘Pump Permissive in Sequential Mode’ will appear. If
now Pump start signal is initiated, following operation takes place in a Sequence:
5.1. Suction Butter Fly Valve starts to open and continues opening till it is 100% open & Suction
BFV ‘Open’ indication comes. (At-least one of the three Butter Fly Valves leading to the
common Suction Header is already open as per clause 3.1 above)
5.2. Once the suction BFV is 100% open the Pump is switched ON & the Pump ON indication
appears in OWS.
5.3. As soon as the Pump is switched ON, the Discharge BFV starts opening & continues to open
till it is 100% open & the Discharge BFV ‘Open’ indication comes.
6. NORMAL STOPPING OF PUMP IN SEQUENTIAL MODE:
Once the Stop signal for a Pump is initiated, following actions take place in a sequence:
6.1. The Discharge BFV starts closing and continues to close till it is 100% closed and Discharge
BFV ‘Close’ indication comes.
6.2. As soon as the Discharge BFV reaches its 100% Closed position, the Pump is switched OFF
automatically and Pump ‘OFF’ indication appears.
6.3. As soon as the Pump is switched OFF, its Suction BFV starts closing & continues to close till
it is 100% closed and Suction BFV ‘Close’ indication comes.
7. TRIPPING OF PUMP:
Irrespective of whether the Pump is in Sequential or Individual Mode, the Pump will trip if any of
the following conditions takes place:
7.1. Occurrence of any Electrical fault, e.g. Motor Overload, Earth Fault, Single Phasing etc.
7.2. All the ‘Opened’ BFVs leading to the Common Suction Header close accidentally.
7.3. Suction BFV of the particular Pump closes accidentally.
7.4. Discharge BFV closes accidentally.
7.5. All the three BFVs leading to the Suction Header close accidentally.
7.6. Raw Water Common Discharge Header becomes too high.
Irrespective of whether the Pump is in Sequential or in Individual Mode, the Pump will trip if any
of the conditions described in clause 7 above is satisfied and following actions take place:

CHANGES IN OPERATION PHILOSOPHIES OF MU WATER & RW PUMPS
Clause No. 6.2 describes that “Once the Discharge BFV closes around 75%, the Pump is switched OFF
automatically and Pump ‘OFF’ indication appears.”
The same should be read as - As soon as the Discharge BFV reaches its 100% Closed position, the Pump is
switched OFF automatically and Pump ‘OFF’ indication appears.
The above changes are required as Butter Fly Valves with Electrical Actuators can not generate any signal at 75 /
80% closed position. There is no other change in the Operation Philosophies.
