Working with Risks

• Smallpox How  smallpox  claimed  its

final  victim
• Only infectious disease to be
eradicated
The  Smallpox  death  that  locked
• Global vaccination – successful down  Birmingham  could  have
been  avoided
• Last natural case – 1977 in Somalia

• Last laboratory acquired infection

Birmingham UK

• Medical photographer died

• Virus escaped through the duct system

Components of Laboratory Safety

Safety
Control
Levels

Classification of
Electrical
Safety
organisms on 1. Personal level safety

Safety control levels

1. Administrative control

2. Personal control

3. Work practice or Procedure control

4. Engineering control
Administrative Control
This has to be planed by the Laboratory In-Charge

• Safety manual (with lab guidelines and policies)

• Training (regularly, fire evacuation)

• Occupational health measures (Vaccination, Records,

post exposure prophylaxis, ICU to supervise)

• Safety audits (regularly)

• Inspection
Personal Control
Laboratory staff is responsible for the correct practice

• PPE - gloves, masks, goggles, gowns, lab coats

• Adequate supply

• Train to choose appropriate PPE

• Instructions in the safety manual

• Supervision
Work practices or procedure control

Ensures safety when performing a test or using an equipment

• Standard precautions
• Work instructions
• Access to equipment
• Pre-work checklists
• Good housekeeping
• Lab space and equipments
• Storage and labeling
• Decontamination
• Waste segregation and disposal
Engineering Control
Items or equipment used to reduce exposure to harmful
substances

• Closed systems

• BSC

• Safety carriers

• Barrier tips

• Emergency wash areas

Hazard Group Organisms
• 4 groups

• Classification based on

Organism pathogenic to man?

Hazard to workers?

Transmissible to community?

Effective prophylaxis or treatment available?

Hazard Groups
1. Hazard Group 1 - Biological agent unlikely to cause human disease -
Risk Negligible

2. Hazard Group 2 - Biological agent, can cause human disease, may be

a hazard to employees, unlikely to spread to community, treatment
available Eg: Legionella - Risk Low

3. Hazard Group 3 - Biological agent, can cause severe human disease,

serious hazard to employees, may spread to community, but treatment
available to prevent or control the onset of disease Eg: - Risk medium

4. Hazard Group 4 - Biological agent, can cause severe human disease,

serious hazard to employees, likely to spread to community, no
treatment available to prevent or control the onset of disease Eg: Ebola
- Risk High
Containment levels
Use of devices to ensure
safety
• Biological safety cabinets

1. Class I - Operator and environment protection. No

product protection

2. Class II - Operator, environment and product

protection

3. Class III - High level Operator, environment and

product protection
• PPE

• Air current control - avoid sudden movements, minimise

opening and closing of door and windows, wait until flow
is stabilised, Should not obstruct the front grill, flames are
not allowed

• Good laboratory practices - minimal equipments,

decontamination before and after use, minimise spills,
decontaminate any spill, UV lamp when indicated

• Periodic checks - UV lamp, air flow, HEPA filters

Routine Procedures to
Ensure Safety

• Hand washing

• Sharp disposal

• Waste disposal - colour code for waste segregation

Electrical safety

• Quality of equipments

• Positioning and installation

• Operation
Maintenance of laboratory
equipments
• SOPs - operation, calibration, validation

• Maintenance schedules with check lists with responsibility

• Log book

• Serviced as recommended

• Repairs by qualified persons

• Stock of essential spare parts
