HAZARDS IN THE OPERATING ROOM

Introduction

Classification of Hazards

Regulation of Hazards

2
INTRODUCTION TO HAZARDS IN
THE OR
• The operation room is a high-risk environment where both the patient
and the care giver are exposed to a variety of hazards.
• These hazards can cause serious injuries or illnesses, and it is essential
that all team members are aware of them to ensure a safe working
environment.
• Therefore, it is important that staff have knowledge of the hazards
involved in equipment use, the causes of accidental injury and the
source of health risks.

3
CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDS

Physical Hazards

• Physical hazards in the operation room include slips, trips, and falls, as
well as injuries from moving equipment or sharp instruments.

• These hazards can be minimized by maintaining a clean and clutter-

free environment, wearing slip resistant shoes, and using proper
lifting techniques.
4
CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDS …
Biological Hazards
• Biological hazards in the operation room include exposure to blood
borne pathogens, such as HIV and hepatitis, airborne pathogens, such
as tuberculosis and infectious waste, cuts or needle-stick injuries,
surgical plume and latex sensitivity.
• Heath professionals can protect themselves by wearing personal
protective equipment, such as gloves, masks, and gowns, and
following proper infection control procedures.

5
CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDS …

Chemical Hazards

• Chemical hazards in the operation room include exposure to

anesthesia gases, cleaning chemicals, and sterilizing agents.

• These hazards can be minimized by using proper ventilation systems,

wearing protective equipment, and following established protocols
for handling and disposing of hazardous materials.
6
CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDS …

Fire Hazards

• Fire hazards in the operation room can be caused by electrical

equipment, flammable materials, and oxygen-rich environments.

• Medical professionals can minimize the risk of fire by following

established protocols for handling electrical equipment, ensuring that
all materials are properly stored, and avoiding the use of open flames.
7
CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDS …

Electrical Hazards

• Electrical hazards in the operation room can be caused by faulty

equipment, improper wiring, or exposure to water.

• Medical professionals can minimize the risk of electrical injury by using

properly grounded equipment, avoiding the use of extension cords,
and following established protocols for handling electrical equipment

8
CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDS …

Ergonomic Hazards

• Ergonomic hazards in the operation room can include repetitive

motion injuries, back pain, and musculoskeletal disorders.

• Health professionals can minimize the risk of these injuries by using

proper body mechanics, taking frequent breaks, and using ergonomic
equipment.
9
REGULATION OF HAZARDS

• Standards, guidelines and recommended practices have been developed

by many professional associations, governmental and nongovernmental
agencies such as MoH,WHO, CDC, FDA, and etc.

• These includes:
Grounding

Personal Protective Equipment/PPE

Fire and Explosion Control
