PLC for the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) system

The pressure swing adsorption generally consists four operational steps which are
adsorption, depressurisation, regeneration (pressure equalization, purging) and repressurization. The
main process steps of a typical PSA system is shown in Figure 3. These contain a complex valve
network that is operated to switch between each absorbent beds. PLC is stand for programmable
logic controllers which is specialised computer used to control process system. PLC is capable for
faster control and provide more accuracy with reduction of cycle times as it will manipulate the
switching valves in PSA process in a fixed sequence. PLC has Central Processing Unit(CPU) as a
main critical section which act as brain of the system and the memory will record all of data. How
the PLC works has been shown in Figure 2.

The 4 bed adsorber columns are used in this plant. The operational steps occurs in cycles
with a 10 minute period. The four adsorber columns are all in a quarter period out of phase from
one another, therefore the inlet gas switches to reform in approximately every 2 1/2 minutes. Firstly,
the adsorption will take place by activating of the control valve AV-517 as the gas will flow
through the adsorber column in an upward direction. The impurity are selectively adsorbed on the
adsorbent pack bed in the column to allow pure hydrogen flow up to the top of column. At the same
time, the control valve AV-501 will be activated to deliver pure hydrogen out as a product. While
the first column (S-501) is fed, the co-current equalisation, counter current depressurisation, and co-
current depressurisation are operated in 2nd column (S-502), 3rd column (S-503), and 4th column
(S-504) respectively, these activated by opening valve AV-505, AV-506, AV-507 and AV-508.
After that, during the re-pressurisation in 2nd column(S-502), the second time depressurisation
takes place in 4th column with purging step in 3rd column by activating valve AV-509, AV-510,
AV-511 and AV-512. The tail gas can flow down the column due to purging and depressurisation
steps and valve AV-524 will be opened in order to allow the tail gas to deliver to further process.
The third time depressurisation can be taking place in 4th column with the pressure equalisation in
3rd column by activating valve AV-513, AV-514, AV-515 and AV-516. Once the the adsorbent of
first column is reached the adsorb limit, it will stop adsorption and turn to be regeneration then
allow the next column to be adsorption in consecutive cycle. The cycle steps are illustrated in a
