If you were to build a power plant, which fuel would you base your plant on and why? Draw
a neat sketch of your plant.

Wind Energy

Given that the average wind speed is 7 m/s, the rotor diameter is 70 m and the conversion coefficient

(coefficient of performance C p) is 0.32, calculate the number of wind generators required to produce

the equivalent energy of a 650 MW CCGT operating at 78% load factor. Assume ρair = 1.3 kg /m3
The site owner has installed a three bladed HAWT (Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine) with a

rotor diameter of 14 meters. For a wind speed of 14 m/s the power output of the wind

turbine is 58 KW. Assume ρair = 1.3 kg /m3.

(a) Compute the wind power.

(b) Calculate the efficiency of the wind turbine.

(c) Calculate the distance travelled by the rotor tip per revolution.

(d) Calculate the blade tip speed, if the blades are rotating at 230 rpm

(e) Compute the tip-speed ratio at 230 rpm.

Solar Energy
Estimate the daily load and the peak power required by a PV system that has three appliances connected to it

with the following characteristics:

Appliance 1, 25 W operated for 8 h (9 am – 5 pm).

Appliance 2, 35 W operated for 3 h (10 am – 1 pm).

Appliance 3, 45 W operated for 2 h (2 pm – 4 pm).

Also, draw a time schedule diagram for the PV system.

With the aid of schematic diagrams describe power generation by solar PV system and solar thermal
system.

With the aid of a schematic diagram describe two different methods of solar power generation
