    Impact of distance learning on students
    Development and learning process

    1-Introduction:

    The internet has become a vital way for students or teachers to gain information and enhance their knowledge

    in the 21 century. So now world-class institutions and colleges offer online learning by electronic networks

    that connects the instructor or the teacher with their students by transferring their knowledge to the students

    without the need for the student to be physically present in the classroom with its instructor. Distance learning

    improved nowadays because it offers a wide range of benefits for the students that can’t attend the

    college due to financial problems and other problems that will be mentioned later on. Recent studies showed

    the number of students registered in online courses significantly increased from 4 million in 2013 to 7 million

    in 2019. Hence distance learning is expanding worldwide with advanced technology. The question here

    is will distance learning replace traditional face to face learning or the gap of no student-instructor real

    physical interaction and communication makes the traditional learning method more preferred? In this paper

    the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning will be mentioned and a conclusion will be

    mentioned in the end.

    2-Advantages of distance learning:

    The adoption of distance learning has several benefits especially for higher degree education for students who

    wants an accredited degree from world-class universities. The main and most important advantage of online

    learning is the flexibility in terms of choosing a suitable time for attending classes that suits the learner , so the

    students at any time can get access to its source of information making the student more comfortable. Besides

    it offered great opportunities for learners to communicate with their colleagues efficiently, removing the barriers

    that occurs in traditional learning methods when students was fear to ask questions and interact in class. Hence

    sharing their point of views, respecting it, which improves the class interactivity and efficiency. As well

    distance learning is cost-effective, it reduces traveling costs making the online method

    preferred for people that can’t attend the class maybe it’s too far or they can’t travel and get a visa if the

    university was in another country. After a research, it was shown that 50% of people prefer distance learning

    on really going and attending the class if the college was far from home, hence online learning is the

    preferred one due to its reduced cost and also reduce the amount of time wasted on driving to the college

    and going back. Also, distance learning helps the learners to go further in their education at their own

    pace or speed, hence decreasing the stress and increasing the learner satisfaction which allows them to be

    productive compared to being obliged to finish their assignments and tasks in limited and precise time like

    the traditional learning method adopts. Finally, it should be mentioned that using distance learning

    helps the learner to be independent, managing his own time and developing himself without to have an instructor

    with him which is so important for every learner to be a leader in the future and advise people.

    3-Disadvantages of distance learning:

    Despite of its advantages, distance learning when it’s adopted, it has some disadvantages that

    makes the traditional learning method more preferred. The main problem that really decrease the online

    method’s efficiency is the lack of interaction between the learner and his instructor, to be more clear the student

    necessary needs daily motivation and the ability to manage time in the right way, consequently the learner

    will be less productive in terms of completing his education and being motivated to have more knowledge.

    Therefore the traditional method with face to face interaction is more effective and productive that the

    online one since the learner is in direct communication with his instructor. When it comes to communication

    skills, the distance learning have a negative effect, even if the learner have perfect academic knowledge, the

    gap still big in terms of being able to deliver this knowledge to other people due to the lack of skills possessed

    by each learner, and this skill can only be learned when the learner is present with his instructor that may

    inspire him and of course this inspiration will not happen by distance learning. Moreover, every student have

    his own social life at the university that increase the learner satisfaction when learning, having your friends

    around you, supporting you, having fun, eating lunch together really makes the learner loves to go to the

    college. For this reason, when it comes to distance learning the learner don’t have these social interactions, instead

    he is at home receiving information only, negatively affecting the learner pleasure that’s why most people

    prefer going to college instead of sitting at home and learning only. As well some education programs

    requires practical application instead of having only knowledge and information, for this reason, distance

    learning suits more humanities education, and can’t be adopted in majors like engineering and medical science.

    consequently these majors require applications by hand with an instructor to gain the desired knowledge.

    4-Conclusion:

    Although distance learning helps the learner to depend on himself to undergo his education on his own time

    management and developing his individual work skills also enhancing communication between learners,

    the distance learning really can’t replace the traditional face to face method because every student needs

    motivation by his instructor and every student has different needs that only the real presence of the

    instructors can help every student to face and fix his own struggles, as well every student needs to have his

    own social life when he is learning in a college that the distance learning can’t make it possible. As a final

    conclusion the traditional learning method never can be replaced despite the advantages of the distance

    learning that may be only an option when the college is out of residence location and hard to arrive at. After

    all evidences mentioned, the main goal of every instructor and teacher is to reach every student’s heart to

    understand him and help him to improve and fulfill his potential, this only can happen with the traditional

    method only which makes it the best possible option for every student.
