CONSTRUCTION METHODLOGY FOR WELL FOUNDATION
Objective: Construction of well foundation as per drawings
Responsibility: Primary - Section Heads
Secondary - Site Engineer

Safety Precautions :

a) Platform on the inner & outer face of steining before shutter fixing.
b) Safety net to cover the dredge hole at top during shuttering, rebar & concreting operations.
c) Frequent inspection of crane wire ropes.
d) Restricted movement of men & equipment around the well during sinking operations.
e) Proper drainage on reclamated area to ensure smooth vehicular movement.
f) Reverse horn facilities on all tier mounted plying plants.
g) Usage of helmets, safety belts & other PPE by all construction personnel.
h) Regular inspection of all electrical points.

The construction of well foundations involves the following stages:

A) Reclamation across the river (in case of wells falling in water locations)
B) Preparation of cutting edge base
C) Casting of curb & sinking
D) Casting of steinings & sinking
E) Bottom plug
F) Sand filling & Top plug
G) Well Cap
The above stages of construction are detailed below.

A. Reclamation across the river:

As most of the proposed wells are within the waterway of the river, a earthern bund across the river shall be
constructed. The width of the bund shall include a suitable road for regular plying of construction plant. At
the well locations, local island shall be developed. Hume pipes of 1000 mm diameter shall be laid in the
waterway portion for allowing sufficient free flow of water. On the dry bed area, the ground will be leveled .
The top level of the reclamation bund shall be kept at 300 mm above water level.

B. Cutting Edge:

The cutting edge shall be fabricated as per the drawing in pieces at a fabrication workshop. The centerline
& transverse line shall be marked on the island. The base for placement of cutting edge shall be prepared
by leveling the existing/filled ground. An annular trench of 1.50M width & 300 mm depth shall be made. The
trench will be filled & compacted with gravel of 150 mm thick. Over the gravel, 35 Nos wooden sleepers of
150x200x1200 mm will be placed at equal spacing and in same level. The area between the sleepers shall
be filled with sand/soil. The fabricated cutting edge shall be assembled at the location with respect to
centrepoints & levels. The splice joints of the cutting edge shall be welded to make it into a single unit. The
20 mm dia reinforcement shall be welded in position. The 16 mm dia reinforcement shall be inserted into
the holes provided in the cutting edge & the bottom welded with a MS nut. The cutting edge position will be
inspected by the Engineer & recorded.

Curb:

The curb inner shutter shall be placed in position & supported after alignment. The cut & bent treated
reinforcement shall be tied in location as per the drawing. 15 Nos of 40/50mm dia pvc pipes shall be placed
in vertical position on the inner shutter bottom as per sketch below. The outer shutter shall be placed &
aligned. Tie rods within pvc sleeve shall be fixed in location. The curb concrete shall be placed and vibrated
with needle vibrators in layers in single pour with concrete pump & concrete supplied from centralized
batching plant and transported to location by transit mixers. On the completion of the pour the top surface

shall be prepared for a construction joint. The external shutters shall be removed after 24hrs and curing
shall commence. The inner shutters shall be removed after 72hrs of concrete completion & curing
commenced. Thereafter, diagonally opposite sleepers shall removed to enable sinking. The soil inside the
well shall be removed by 18/75MT crane and grab thereby enabling the sinking upto a depth of 2.0M. Prior
to commencement of sinking, the gauge shall be marked on the well outer surface on the four directions.

A. Steining:

After the curb sinking, the reinforcement for the first lift shall be tied. Parallely the inner & outer shutters
shall be erected, aligned & supported. Air jetting pipes ¾” pvc shall be fixed touching the outer shutter inner
face. The lift of 2.4M shall be cast in single pour using concrete pump, transit mixers, batching plant. The
construction joint shall be prepared after initial setting. The external & internal shutters shall be removed
after 24hrs and curing to commence. After gauge marking, 18/75MT cranes & grab shall carry out the
sinking of the lift by removing the soil from the dredge hole. The tilt of the well to be monitored regularly
during sinking with the use of water tube level fixed on top. The well tilt &shift shall be checked with leveling
instrument / theodolite after completion of sinking of each lift. The further lifts shall be repeated as per the
above. After 10M of steining casting & sinking, two lifts casting shall be taken continuously before sinking.
The air jetting & water jetting pipes shall be continued till the final lift. The air jet method & water jetting
method shall be executed to aid in sinking .

B. Bottom Plug:

On reaching the founding level, the sump/bulb as required/specified shall be made. The bottom plug
concrete shall be placed in position with tremmie pipes. The concrete shall be fed to the tremmie hopper
with crane & bucket or pump. Repeated soundings at different locations will be taken to ensure the build-up
of concrete plug.

C. Sand Filling & Top Plug:

After 3 days of bottom plug concreting, the well dredge hole shall be filled with sand upto the required level.
The top plug shall then be placed.

D. Well Cap:

The treated reinforcement for the well cap shall be tied in position. The shutter shall be fixed & concrete
placed. The construction joint at pier location shall be prepared. Curing to commence, and shutter to be
removed after 24 hrs.

Major Equipments to be used for well construction:
