MS Drainage
1.0 General
1.2 This work shall consist of the construction of surface drains, subsoil drains,
pipe culverts, sumps and other drainage structures in accordance with the
Project Specification. Drainage works shall be constructed to the lines,
grade and cross-sections shown on the Construction Drawings.
1.3 After pit excavation, no work can commence until “approval to proceed” is
given by the S.O.
1.4 Submit manpower, plants and machinery and materials lists for SC
approval.
i) Manpower List:
Site Engineer - 1
Site Supervisor - 2
Surveyor - 1
Chainman - 3
Machine Operator - 3
General Workers - 8
2.1 Setting out of the location, alignment and invert level of each drain line. The
centreline of the drain shall then be set out and pegged on the ground. The
invert level of the drain shall be indicated on the offset pegs at 10m
intervals.
For the construction of concrete bedding of pipe culverts, wooden peg are
2.2 first driven into the formation level at 3m interval along the longitudinal
profile of the pipe alignment.
2.3 Existing invert level, finished invert level and drain alignment shall be

checked
3.1 This work shall include supply and installation of precast concrete drain or
Cast in-situ, excavation by excavator or by hand if excavator is not
accessible. Laying concrete drain bedding, laying drain, jointing with 1:3
cement mortar and backfilling all in accordance with Specification and
details as shown on Drawings.
4.1 After excavation has been completed, a visual inspection shall be carried
out by SC to determine whether any testing required for suspected sofr
ground / unsuitable material. If testing is required, SC shall instruct
Contractor carry out Mackintosh Probe at location identified by SC and/or
material laboratory test according to project specifications.
4.2 Mass concrete or hardcore shall be placed at the bottom of the trench where
indicated, proper to falls and joined straight true to lines and levels.
4.3 The precast concrete U drains shall be laid on the bedding by sling to the
proper falls and jointed straight, thru to lines and levels.
4.4 The joint shall be grouted with 1:3 cement mortar complying with Project
Specifications in such a manner that the finished joints are watertight and
present a smooth invert surface.
4.5 Shall cast in-situ concrete drains is required, timber formwork shall be
provided to ensure thickness and shape of the concrete drains. Concrete
shall be poured in sections not exceeding 2m in length and shall be carried
out between end forms in alternate bays. Construction joints shall not be
formed in the inverts.
4.6 Capping beam complete with all necessary reinforcement tied to starter bar,
formwork is placed in with concrete to details as shown in Construction
Drawing.
4.7 All concrete shall be grade 20/20 concrete unless otherwise specified in
Construction Drawings.
5.1 After excavation has been completed the base of the trench is then
compacted to the required levels and grade as shown in Construction
Drawing.
5.2 Brick and cement mortar used shall comply with the requirements of Project
Specifications.

5.3 After pit excavation, no work can commence until “approval to proceed” is
given by the S.O. Pour mass concrete grade 20/20. Once concrete harden
lay precast blocks to correct levels and grade then pour surrounding of
precast block as shown on construction drawings.
5.4 Brick wall shall be erected to the specified level as per Construction
Drawing.
5.5 Newly laid brickworks shall be protected from rain, running and surface
water.
5.7 Install RC strut at 3m c/c if drain depth exceeding 1m. Alignment and invert
level of drain shall be checked prior to backfilling works.
6.1 After excavation has been completed, a visual inspection shall be carried
out by SC to determine whether any testing required for suspected sofr
ground / unsuitable material. If testing is required, SC shall instruct
Contractor carry out Mackintosh Probe at location identified by SC and/or
material laboratory test according to project specifications.
6.2 Prior to construction of pipe culvert, the earthworks at required location shall
be constructed to a level of 600mm above the top of culvert design levels or
to the top of subgrade level, whichever is lower.
6.3 Trench shall be excavated to the level of pipe diameter level plus another
150mm, proper to falls and joined straight true to lines and levels. Shoring
shall be provided where deemed necessary.
6.4 Base of trench shall be backfilled with excavated material and mechanically
compact backfill. The bottom of pipe culvert trench shall be trimmed to a
suitably smooth plane surface kept free from water.
6.6 Bedding material of Type A consist of Grade 20/20 concrete as per Project
Specification shall be placed at the bottom of the trench.
6.7 Once set, pipe culverts shall be lowered to concrete bedding true to line and
level and in conformity with dimensions shown on the Construction Drawing.
6.8 The pipes are lowered to position by sling. Care shall be taken to ensure
that the loading axes are positioned exactly vertical for pipes.
6.9 Pipe shall be laid in upstream direction and shall rest on even foundations
for the full length of the barrel.
CONSTRUCTION METHOD STATEMENT FOR DRAINAGE WORKS
6.10 Following the laying of pipe, trench shall be backfilled using excavated
material and compacted up to 300mm above pipe culvert., backfilling shall
progress equally on both side of the pipe.
6.11 Heavy construction equipment shall not be operated over or near the culvert
until the amount of filling required by the Project Specification has been
places and compacted around and over the pipes.
7.2 Bedding material of Type A consist of Grade 20/20 concrete as per Project
Specification shall be placed at the bottom of the trench.
7.3 Once set, pipe culverts shall be lowered to concrete bedding true to line and
level and in conformity with dimensions shown on the Construction Drawing.
7.4 The pipes are lowered to position by sling. Care shall be taken to ensure
that the loading axes are positioned exactly vertical for pipes.
7.5 Pipe shall be laid in upstream direction and shall rest on even foundations
for the full length of the barrel.
7.7 Wingwall and aprons shall then be reconstructed and be followed with
backfilled procedure.
8.1 Pit excavation shall be done using excavator or backhoe. Water pump
required should there be stagnant water.
8.3 Mass concrete shall be placed and spread evenly to required thickness in
areas set out for the construction of the sump.
8.6 Upon reaching the required depth for concrete slab as shown, side form,
rebar and concrete place to form cover slab.
8.8 Inlet and outlet pipes together with iron steps, angles edging, cover plate,
etc are placed and secured in position before commencement of plastering
to the walls.
8.9 Brick wall encircling the inlet and outlet pipes shall be plastered up with high
alumina cement and sand to ensure water tightness to the sump.
