Q.1 The following table summarizes the duration of eight activities and their resource
requirements.

Resource
Time Preceding Req.
Activity (day) Activities (units/day)
A 3 -- 3
B 2 -- 1
C 3 B 2
D 2 A, C 2
E 1 B 1
F 4 B 0
G 3 E 2
H 2 D 1
To Do’s:
1. Draw the activity on node (AON) diagram?
2. Find all four times and the total floats and free floats for each activity?
3. Draw Gant charts of ES and LS of activities? Draw the S- curve? Use Excel.
4. Draw resource diagram and S-curve of the resources based on ES and LS? Use Excel
5. Using Burgess method to schedule the resource? Use Excel

Burgess Method:
1. Critical activities (B,C,D and H) have no floats.
2. Activity G: total float =3
a. Delay one day results in squared sum of resources =122
b. Delay two days results in squared sum of squares = 118
c. Delay three days results in squared sum of squares = 114*
Hence we delay activity G by three days.
3. Activity F: since resource requirement is zero, no need to delay.
4. Activity E:total float =3
a. Delay one day results in squared sum of resources =108
b. Delay two days results in squared sum of squares = 108
c. Delay three days results in squared sum of squares = 108*
We chose to delay activity E by 3 days to give project management more flexibility.

5. Activity A: total float = 2

a. Delay one day results in squared sum of resources =114
b. Delay two days results in squared sum of squares = 120
Hence, no need to delay activity A.
