Valmet operates in three key business lines: services, pulp and energy technologies, and paper technologies. It provides solutions across the pulp, paper, and energy industries.

The three business lines of Valmet are: services, pulp and energy technologies, and paper technologies.

Small bioenergy solutions typically have fuel transportation distances of less than 50km, medium 20-100MWe, and large 100-300MWe.

Bioenergy solutions for different needs

Small – • Example:
modularized BayerfondsBestEnergy
< 20 MWe • Fuel logistics from neighborhood
• Typical fuel transportation
< 50 km

Medium – BFB • Example: PGE Szczecin

< 20-100 MWe • Fuel logistics by trucks and
trains
• Typical fuel transportation
50-100 km

Large – CFB • Example: AlholmensKraft

< 100-300 MWe • Well-developed fuel logistics
• Fuel transportation longer
distances, e.g. by vessels

Case: Heizkraftwerk Zwickau Süd
GmbH & Co. KG
 Start-up December 2012
 Modularized Biopower 5 power
plant as turnkey delivery
 Fuel: Biomass and landscaping
material
 Capacity:
– Max. 10 megawatts of district heating
for the city of Zwickau
– Max. 5 megawatts of electricity for the Customer: “Through this
national grid investment, we will not only secure
the production of district heat for
our town but will also reduce our
dependence on ever rising oil and
gas prices.”

5
Case: Nacogdoches, USA: Greenfield delivery
for biomass combustion
 Start-up autumn 2012
 Metso’s first greenfield power
plant delivery to the USA with a
Metso DNA control system
 One of the world’s largest and
most efficient biomass boilers
 Fuel: waste wood
 Capacity:100 Mwe
 Technology: Bubbling fluidized Industy official: “We didn’t believe a
bed single 100 MWe biomass fired unit
was possible,” said one industry
official, “but Metso has shown it can
be done, and done well.”

6
Case: Conversion from fossil fuel to biomass
Case: Martinská Teplárenská, Slovakia
 Conversion of lignite boiler to
biomass firing
 Boiler can burn industrial by-
products, refuse derived fuels
and biofuels. Coal, gas and oil
can be used as supplementary
fuels. A boiler modernized in this
way is virtually new, at a cost far Solver effect
below that of a new unit. Results:
•Diversified fuel basis
•Security of energy supply
• Decrease in annual emissions:
CO2 200.000 tons/year – equals to
120.000 cars, SO2 2.500 tons/year,
(1) Based on CO2 emission of 165 g/km (7 l/100 km gasoline) and 10,000 km per year NO2 120 tons/year
(2) Carbon footprint calculated as CO2. Based on 8,000 hrs operation time per year.
Compared to firing of brown coal with 1% sulfur content.

Biopower 5 modularized power plant

 Complete modular CHP plant

 2,8 – 5,6 MWe power range
 Heat up to 14 MWth.
 Biograte combustion
 Developed for humid low grade
biomass
 Fulfils most stringent European
emissions standards
 Typical fuels: Wood chips, saw
dust, bark, peat
