Flush Theme

There are many themes that could be used to describe the book Flush. The main
theme is “never give up.” There are many details in this book to support this theme such
as when plans fail, when people don’t get what they want, and when people are not safe
alone.
In the book Flush, by Carl Hiaasen, many plans fail no matter what is going on,
but the characters didn’t give up. For example, Dad tried to sink Dusty Muleman’s boat
forever and for the better, but he landed in jail. His sinking of the boat did not cause any
severe damage, so it was just brought back to the surface after a few days. But Dad did
not give up by just failing once. Next, Abbey’s plan to videotape the crew dumping the
Coral Queen’s holding tank was a disaster. The text on page 129 states, “The tape was
so dim and shaky that it was almost impossible to see what was going on.” The video
could not be presented to the Coast Guard, so it was deleted. This problem did not
discourage Abbey or Noah, it made them even more ideas and inspired them to do
better. Another example of perseverance is when Lice Peeking is supposed to give a
statement on a piece of paper to the Coast Guard saying that Dusty Muleman had been
illegally dumping his holding tank. The whole plan backfired when Lice ran away. Noah
did not have any evidence, but he would not stop trying because he really cared about
the environment. To wrap it up, many times, plans failed when Noah’s family tried to nail
Dusty Muleman, but they never gave up, and in the end, their work paid off.
Additionally, the Underwoods and many other characters in the novel Flush did
not get what they wanted at some point. For instance, Noah’s family wanted to see the
green flash when the sun went down for many years. They would sit out on their boat
and watch the sun go down. Then, they would wait. For years, the green flash never
showed. Noah and his family would never give up. In addition, Mom wanted to find
Abbey at the Coral Queen marina, but she and her family did not find Abbey there. Mom
was very worried that Abbey had been captured, or got lost. No matter what, they did
not stop searching. As a result, the family found her and was whole again. Then, there
are situations that are a whole lot worse that losing a child, as those people would say.
One person, Dusty Muleman, would say that much. He did not want to get caught
dumping his holding tank in the water. Well, that didn’t turn out as great as he wanted.
Dusty Muleman also did not like the idea of paying a huge fine. Even though he did get
the fine lowered, Mr. Muleman still had to pay ten thousand dollars! He persevered and
reopened the Coral Queen. Who was a top suspect for many crimes? Paine
Underwood! He committed many crimes, and his family were sad and angry about his
time in jail. Surely no one wants to have a parent in jail like that. Nevertheless, the kid
helped their dad through the times in jail. Even Noah’s worst enemy, Jasper Jr., would
not want his parents to be in prison. Jasper Jr. did get what he deserved in the end. He
and his best friend, Bull were throwing a party, when they found Cuban cigars. Jasper
took the first and spit it “twenty feet across the room … where it landed in an open crate
of bottle rockets, which soon began to ignite, one after another.” Of course, the Coral
Queen caught fire and burned to nothing. Though, Jasper never gave up trying to
convince people he did not know how the fire started. All in all, many characters in the
book Flush didn’t get what they wanted, but they persevered to find something they
were happy enough with.
Most importantly, Noah and Abbey had many troubles with Jasper Jr. Noah was
bullied by him almost every time he went on a mission. Even though Noah was angry,
he never gave up trying to be nice. On page 152, Jasper Jr. says, “ I’ll break your
brother’s neck, you don’t spit out Bull’s ear by the count of three.” This shows how rude
Jasper is to Noah. Noah always stayed calm so he wouldn’t get hurt. I know he probably
also wanted to not get involved and show he didn’t care in order to annoy Jasper Jr. If
you ignore someone, they might just stop. Whenever Jasper Jr. said something, Noah
would always come up with a comment that showed he could keep his cool and did not
show interest in fighting back. I can infer it also annoyed Jasper and made him furious
that Noah was trying to make him seem immature. This happens at the marina on the
day the Coral Queen i s being hauled up from the depths. Jasper Jr. said, “Underwood,
I’m gonna kick your butt from here to Miami.”This shows how mad Jasper is at Noah for
his dad sinking Jasper’s father’s boat. As usual, Noah remained calm and later, after
saying not and getting called dorkface, he explained. To reply he said, “Because your
dad’s about to come over here and kick yours,” which, in that case, was true. Noah
knows that retaliating will get him nowhere. On the other hand, Jasper Jr. gets all fired
up whenever there is an Underwood around him. To sum it up, there are many times in
this novel that Noah could have just given up trying to be nice to Jasper Jr. and been
very mean, but he never gave up.
In short, many people in Flush faced challenges such as ideas not working, not
meeting expectations, and trouble with others. From proving that someone committed a
crime, to trying not to get caught committing the crime, characters in this novel
defended and fought for their cause. The theme of Flush is definitely to never give up,
you might just get what you asked for.
