Students’ indiscriminate disposal of waste in the school generally border on indiscipline which

pose health challenges and environmental degradation. Students seem to indiscriminately litter

their learning environment, urinate and desecrate arbitrarily in unauthorized places e.g. behind

classroom blocks, laboratories, canteens, restaurants, public conveniences, etc. Littering of

classrooms with sachet water bags, biscuit, groundnut and orange peels, Indiscriminate littering of

the environment with polythene bags and Littering of the school learning environment with

wrappers from junk foods and dropping of waste papers in classroom. Studies indicate that a higher

level of overall waste production is distinctly correlated with increased rates of illegal dumping of

waste and the increasing number of illegal dumping spots. The increase in overall waste production

leads to improper waste disposal of waste in the environment that causes a big problem in the

society in the future.

Ann N Y Acad Sci(2016);Deepuk, Karupps (2018, p.1); Jutta Gutberlet, Sayed Mohammad and

Nazim Uddin (2017); Dolipas, Bretel; Ramos, Jennifer Lyn; Alimondo, Monica; Mandinno,

Carmelo (2018),

The experiences and practices of household waste management of people in the baranggay

(village) in Manila, Philippines are documented. The citizens are segregating their waste into PET

bottles, glass, and other waste. The household rely on garbage collection by the government.

Collection is done twice daily, except Sundays, and household members brings their garbage when

the truck arrives. People in homes and even the society don’t see its environment as everyone’s

own home. If everyone sees so people will never dare to dispose their waste in a wrong way.
Household waste, although not always per se toxic or hazardous, can become a hazard if not

collected or inadequately managed. Those communities where household waste is not collected or

waste collection is insufficient are the most critical places. Informal and organized waste pickers,

municipal or private waste collectors workers, small waste traders and sometimes residents,

particularly small children, may be considered vulnerable if exposed to waste-borne hazards.

Furthermore, State University students commonly generate vegetable wastes, papers/tissues and

plastic wrappers in their households and always practice waste segregation by classifying their

solid wastes and disposing them in the appropriate waste bins or containers in their households.

Pugot, Lomen (2019); Meghan Daugherty (2019),

Some people are reckless in throwing their garbage. People do not think of the possible results of

their actions on the environmental as well as on health. In school students are ignorance of people

about proper waste disposal, laziness can cause improper garbage disposal because people not

following the correct rules of proper waste disposal their always throw it what place they want and

they have no care what will be the effect of it. Moreover, One reason people litter is because there

no sense of ownership, even though most areas that accumulate litter are on public property, such

as SIUE. Another reason people litter is because they believe someone else will pick up after them.

Students may also tend to litter in places where litter has already accumulated.
Deepuk, Karupps (2018, p.1); Kiran, K; Jatau (2015), There are many reasons for this nuisance.

One fact is that people dare to throw garbage on roads because there is no strict warning or

punishment for those crimes .Lack of awareness among people about dealing with waste is the

cause of these practices. Inadequate and inappropriate knowledge of handling of household waste

may have serious health consequences and a significant impact on the environment as well. In

addition, lack of knowledge, irregular and unplanned dumping of waste are the main reasons of

improper waste disposal. Poor knowledge about waste disposal is the major problem for human

health. Waste container and dustbins are very important need for dispose of waste. Due to lack of

knowledge and insufficient availability of dustbins in homes people are faced many problems.

According to Charles (2015);Deepuk, Karupps (2018, p.3); Hashim (2017),An overview of these

problem is portend that discipline is all about desirable efforts for behavior modification of

students geared towards ensuring a decorous environment for effective learning outcome.

Discipline is the sum of educative effort including the teaching process, the process of shaping,

the facing and setting of conflict and the development of trust. That must be applied regarding

disposing of waste. Furthermore, higher learning institution is important for the development of

cities and solid waste management plan is needed to be outlined by the higher learning institution

comprehensively. In order to reduce the solid wastes generated by students in tertiary education, a

certain level of awareness should be taught through sustainable solid waste management subject

and practices. There is no awareness among the public especially the public of remote areas about

the exact way of disposal of garbage. To prevent this, people have to start implementing the idea

of fine when garbage is wrongly disposed. People have to start spreading awareness on this so that

there is a safe future for all the children.

In order to reduce waste in schools, recycling efforts must be improved and recycling

services must be provided. According to Teo, Vincent(2019); Roberts, Nick(2019 p.1& p.2);

Parocha, Mita; Esguerra, Ernesto; Hular, Celeste(2017), Highly enthusiastic students are also
identified by the schools and trained as Environment Champions to promote recycling in their

schools. Schools are responsible for conducting talks on the environment and assist in planning,

organizing and running recycling/environmental activities. The educational and awareness

programs on the 3Rs have to be sustained and targeted to the community, schools and the

workforce. One such awareness campaign is the annual Recycling Day. The aim of the campaign

is to keep reminding the public schools, community, non-governmental organizations and

recycling companies of the importance of recycling. Moreover, if there are school supplies or

equipment that are not needed or left over at the end of the year, donate them to a local organization

instead of throwing them away. Materials such as aluminum, plastics, and cardboard paper are

easy for schools to collect and bale. In addition, schools must educate students and staff about the

recycling and waste reduction program. No matter how small the recycling program is, educating

the students and staff on the “how” and “why” are vital to its success. The schools should design

school-based program that builds positive attitudes, knowledge and skills in segregation,

continuously educates students to build their attitudes ,develops a culture that sees segregation as

a normal routine, implements projects that utilize teaching and learning strategies that integrate

meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experiences,

creates and imposes policies that will lead to decreased residual wastes, and to integrate waste

management with composting in the grade school. Recycling helps in defending the environment

in addition to providing a lot of usable products to the community and schools without the need

for additional resources. Moreover it can help the environment by reducing pollution and

greenhouse emissions, which at the same time affecting the whole world and how people can make

a difference if recycling is practiced in schools and community.
