UNIT WEIGHT & VOIDS IN AGGREGATE

ASTM C29
A _ UNITE WEIGHT
Introduction:

Test method C29 covers the determination of unit weight in a compacted or loose condition and calculated voids in
fine, coarse, or mixed aggregates based on the same determination. This test method is often used to determine
unit weight values that are necessary for use for many methods of selecting proportions for concrete mixtures.

Definition:

Mass - the quantity of matter in a body.

Weight - the force exerted on a body by gravity.

Unit weight - the weight per unit volume.

Voids in unit volume of aggregate - the space between particles in an aggregate mass not occupied by solid mineral
matter.
Apparatus
1) Scale (or balance, 0.1 lb (0.05 kg))

2) Tamping Rod - a round, straight steel rod, 5/8 in. in diameter and approximately 24 in. in length, having one
end
rounded to a hemispherical tip of the same diameter as the rod.
Measure - a cylindrical metal watertight measure (nominal 1/3 ft3 for coarse aggregate and 1/10 ft3 for fine
aggregate)

Materials

Coarse Aggregate - Oven dried at 110 C, then cooled to room temperature.

Fine Aggregate - Oven dried at 110 C, then cooled to room temperature.
Note: Sample size should be 125 to 200% of the quantity required to fill the measure.

Procedure
1) take the mold in order of max size aggregate

2) take quantity from the sample (fine aggregate & coarse aggregate) increase about 25% the mold size

3) Dry a representative sample of the aggregate (approximately 5kg) to a constant weight at 110°C. Then cool the
sample for 1 to 3 hours, immerse it in water, and allow it to soak for about24(+/-4) hours

4) weight the mold of of the measure alone

5) Fill the measure one-third full and level the surface with the fingers.

6) Rod the layer of aggregate with 25 strokes of the tamping rod evenly distributed over the surface.

7) Add additional aggregate to the measure to the two-thirds full level, level with the fingers, and rod again with
25 strokes of the tamping rod.

8) Finally, add additional aggregate to overflowing and rod again using 25 strokes of the tamping rod.

9) Level the surface of the aggregate with a straightedge.

10) Fill the measure completely full with water and determine the weight of measure plus water.

11) weight the mold and aggregate of the measure (Wmold +agg)

Calculations

1) Calculate the unit weight for the fine aggregates.

γ dry = ( Wagg + mold ) + Wmold)

Vmold

where: W mold = 8345 grams & W agg + mold = 12615grams & V mold = 2650.7188 cm

γ dry = 79072.89

γ ssd = γ dry * ( 1+ ( A/100))

where A = 0.301%

γ ssd = 79310.9

2) Calculate the unit weight for the coarse aggregates(‫)فولية‬

γ dry = ( Wagg + mold ) + Wmold)

Vmold

where: W mold = 7590grams & W agg + mold = 22190 grams & V mold = 10

γ dry = 2978

γ ssd = γ dry * ( 1+ ( A/100))

where A = 1.74%

γ ssd = 3029.8172

3) Calculate the unit weight for the coarse aggregate( ‫)عدسية‬

γ dry = ( Wagg + mold ) + Wmold)

Vmold

where: W mold = 7590grams & W agg + mold = 22290 grams & V mold = 10

γ dry = 2988

γ ssd = γ dry * ( 1+ ( A/100))

where A = 1.74%

γ ssd = 3039.9912

COMMENT
The results of the weights of molds and coarse aggregate are convergent because e strokes step of the tamping
rod is not exact

Purpose of experiment:
The object of this test is to determine the extent corrosion and grinding and about way the friction factors and the
natural factors
Apparatus

1) Losangeles machines
2) Number of steel spherecail
3) The series of sieves
Procedure

take dry condition sample weight 5000grams

1) sample washed after that drying process
2) put the sample in kiln until the weight fixity
3) place the sample in the selected series of sieves look the table
passing Retained A B C D
37.5 25 1250
25 19 1250 2500
19 12.5 1250 2500
12.5 9.5 2500
9.5 6.3 2500
6.3 4.75
4.75 2.36 5000
4) put the sample in loseangeles machines and steel ball during 15 minute (500 cycle ) ( 30-33 rpm )
GRADING NO OF
BALL
A 12
B 11
C 8
D 6
5)
6) place the sample on top the selected series of sieves (1.7mm)
7) record the weight final of the sample

Calculations

Calculat % Abrasion losse

%Abrasion loss= (Worg – Wfinal ) *100

Worg
Where Worg = 5000 grams & Wfinal = 4255 grams

%abrasion loss = 14.5 %

ASTM > 50 %
Comment
The result much smallest then ASTM point out resistance aggregate of coarse high and the quality is good
