CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Higher education is an important goal for many. The large number

of people working for their undergraduate degrees makes this evident:

there were twenty one million students enrolled in postsecondary

education institutions in the United States in 2010 (U.S Department of

Education). The value of higher education is wellknown, as the statistics

about how a degree can improve employment opportunities and increase

earning are often cited. If parents have money to spend on their children’s

education then those students may have the ability to attend school that

others would not. This was suggested by the study mentioned earlier

(Wolniak & Engberg, 2010). In college, this becomes an even more

important factor to consider, as the price for even a single year of tuition

can be very high. Daily allowance is the amount of money that a student is

entitled to on a daily basis. It is one of the resources for buying the needs

of each student. Most of the student gets their allowance from their

parents and parents’ money earned as salary from their work. Higher

family income may have a good contribution in academic performance, but

for the responsible and serious students, low family income must not be an

excuse for poor performance (Adzido, Dzogbede, Ahiare, Dorkpah, 2016).

Bhat, Joshi, Wani (2016) supported the latter claim that socioeconomic

status is the significant factor in academic achievement. Thus, the higher

level of socioeconomic status shows a big contribution toward the quality

of student achievement (Farooq, Chaudry, Shafiq and Berhanu, 2011).

Academic achievement carries out primary significance in the context of

an education system, intend a successful scholastic achievement of the

students and human resources improvement at the high level.

In addition, adolescents having high and middle socioeconomic

status excel in academic performance than adolescents having low

socioeconomic status (Singh and Choudhary, 2015). Socioeconomic

status of the students have an impact to their academic achievement.

Students having a high socioeconomic status have good exposure and

surroundings giving a good result as compared to low socioeconomic

status (Chandra and Azzimudin, 2013). Adolescents who have high and

average socioeconomic status have a better academic achievement than

adolescents belonging to low ones (Farooq, Chaudry, Shafiq, and

Berhanu, 2011).

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Adopt-A-Student is a program at Integrated School of Lawa in

Brgy. Lawa, Calamba that provides financial assistance to learners by

giving them daily allowance. Asurion Company, a company where delivers

insurances for smartphones, tablets, consumer electronics, appliances,

satellite receivers, and jewelry (Wikipedia) are the donors who helps by

contributing a portion of the employee’s income and allowance to a pond

of funds that finances the daily allowance of students under the program.

According to Okioga (2013) having a better socioeconomic status

(SES) has an advantage to afford the needs of students for academic

performance; Low socioeconomic status will have the greatest impact on

the test score. The effect of socioeconomic status on students’

performance result revealed that parents’ education, occupation and

facilities at home affects the student achievement (Saifi and Mehmood,

2011).

Moreover, parents’ employment outside the home demands more

time which denies the children time for educational interaction (Eamon,

2005). There is an instance that those children with low socioeconomic

status performed better academically than those children with good family

background (Aliyu, 2016). Students with high socioeconomic status

perform well because they have better exposure and environment in terms

of infrastructure and facilities (Chandra and Azzimudin, 2013). The studies

of Ogunshola (2012) and Lin and Lv (2017) concluded that parental

socioeconomic status and education background is positively correlated to

students’ academic performance. It is an important factor in students’

academic achievement like students with high socioeconomic status

because they academically achieve better than students with the middle

socioeconomic status (Bhat, Joshi, Wani, 2016). Thus, the correlation

between parental education attainment and academic achievement is

concluded (Alade, Nwangdingwe, and Victor, 2014). The status of the

family or the background matters when it comes to education and/or

performance of the student.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Various efforts had been made on how home visitation works and

how does it make parents involved on their child’s school. The researchers

will use the theories, incentive theory of motivation and equity theory.

Incentive Theory of Motivation

The Incentive Theory of Motivation involves the concepts of

conditioning, homeostasis and positive reinforcement. It started to

emerged during the 1940s and 1950s by psychologists such as Clark Hull.

The incentive is an assurance or an act that is provided for the sake

of greater action. Additional salary or benefits motivate a person to

accomplish greater things. On the other hand, non-monetary incentives

can be also a motivation in accordance to this theory.

Equity Theory

According to the behavioural psychologist John S, Adams, equity theory is

concerned with deifining and measuring therational satisfaction of

employees. It is based on a principle that peoples’ actions and motivation

are guided by fairness and that discrepancies in ths fairness in the

workplace wisll spur them to try and redress it.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The conceptual framework that will be use in this research study is

that is the academic achievement of the recipients where it will be

measure if they maintain it.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study will answer the questions regarding the Adopt-A-Child

program the recipients’ academic achievement will be measured. The

questions that will be answer here in this study are:

1.

HYPOTHESIS

1. There is no relationship on being an Asurion Recipient to the

learners’ academic achievement during the Adopt-A-Child Program.

2. There is no relationship on being an Asurion Recipient to the

learners’ academic achievement after the Adopt-A-Child Program.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be beneficial for the administration, the students,

and the future researchers.

The Administration. The Principal will greatly benefit from this

study because it will inform them that the students who receives allowance

from Asurion are good on maintaining their academic achievement.

The Students. They will benefit to this study because they will be

aware of the relationship of the Adopt-A-Child program to their academic

achievement. Enlightened on what is the impact of relationship of Adopt-A-

Student program to their academic achievement and what they will do to

improve their grades.

The Future Researchers. They will also benefit on this study for

this can be a basis for other future studies. And can also be used as

related literature.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope and delimitation of this study will focus on the 20

Recipients of Integrated School of Lawa located at Brgy. Lawa Calamba

City, Laguna.

The study will investigate the relationship of Adopt-A-Child program

on maintaining the academic achievement of Asurion recipients. The

researchers will start the collection of data in the second week of July and

will take the recipients’ previous final grade and their grade for the 1 st

quarter. However, this study will not cover the reason why the other

previous recipients are not retained.
