Do Social Media and Students Mix?

Social media has become a prevalent aspect of our society. There is no question that it

has a great impact on high school students who now use it as a great means of communication

and self expression. The following paper discusses how social media affects the education of

high school students.

As students use social media more and more it brings up the question, how is it affecting

the education of high school students? In the article, “social media’s impact on students’ mental

health comes into focus.” The author describes how social media can be a negative thing when

used by students. “Social media has crippled my students when it comes to interacting with one

another in person. Their very ability to communicate is deteriorating”(Barrett). By not being able

to correctly interact with others it can strongly affect students, not only socially, but also when it

comes to their education. Being able to talk to others and learn together is an important part of

learning in school.

Another article that addresses the impact of social media in students education is

“Convenience matters: A Qualitative Study on the Impact of the Use of Social Media and

Collaboration Technologies on Learning Experiences and Performance in Higher Education.” By

Jang Yeona. However this article focuses on the positive aspects of social media. Yeona talks
2

about the convenience of social media and why it is important. Because so many students have

social media right at their fingertips it can easily be used to increase the education and learning

of the students. For example in group work it can be essential for communication, and gathering

information.

Another way Social media can greatly strengthen education is talked about by Harry

Dyer in a youtube video called, “Incorporating & accounting for Social Media in Education.” In

this video Dyer explains why it is necessary for social media and education to come together and

for the walls and barriers that stand between them to be taken down. “The more we keep

education in this established offline place, is the more we ignore the skills that it has”(Dyer). In

this quote Dyer is talking about how social media allows teachers to further the ways students

can learn. By not using social media to teach the students are missing out on these opportunities.

Social media can teach students in ways that teachers can’t, or alreast make it easier. For

example, when teaching events from the past, or difficult topics, it can be hard for the teacher to

get through to the student. However, with social media there is so much out there that can be

used for education such as first hand experiences of major events or explanations of hard topics

just on youtube. This allows students to learn in another way that couldn’t be done without social

media.

As helpful as social media can be in education there are also drawbacks to the use of it.

In the political cartoon “back to school” artist Danny Tyree shows the negative effect social

media can have on students in a funny way. (Figure 1)

3

Figure 1. In this cartoon the students don’t understand how books work and want to turn them on

like they would with an electronic device. This is exaggerated to show the effects social media

can have on students. It can be a distraction and make books and other important things seem

unimportant.

Lastly in the article, “The Impact of Social Media on a students life” by Abhishek

Karadkar, the author explains how many students use social media, “Humans are social animals.

We always like to remain in some group or another… 72 percent of high school and 78 percent

of college students spend time on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram”(Karadkar). As many students

use social media it makes sense that it should be used more for education. This can also be a

problem as if students don’t use it for education and instead as a distraction, then there would be

a lot of students suffering.

Social media is a huge part of society and there it no getting away from it. It affects

students in good and bad ways, but I feel that by giving into it, it increases the education of

students. Social media can give students a greater understanding of different topics as well and
4

giving students a way to communicate with and be part of what they are learning. I also feel that

social media can better help the education in students because it is all around us. Just by being on

a social networking app students can see things that are happening around the world that they

wouldn’t have seen otherwise. This can teach in a way that students can relate to.

By accepting social media and using it as a for if teaching it can be a great strength. Not

only will it be easy to access but it will also be easy for students to use as most are constantly

involved in it anyway. Social media and education don’t have to be separate things but instead

should but put together to build upon each other. Social media does affect the education of

students, and does it in a positive way.
