The text describes several statistical hypothesis tests and examples including t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, and chi-square tests.

T-tests, ANOVA, correlation tests, and chi-square tests are described.

Null hypotheses of no difference or no association are being tested across multiple examples involving scores, weights, sales, rankings and skills.

1. The following are the scores in spelling of 10 male and 10 female AB students.

Test the
null hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the performance of male
and female AB students in spelling. Use α=0.05

Male (X1) 14 18 17 16 4 14 12 10 9 17
Female (X2) 12 9 11 5 10 3 7 2 6 13

2. Two groups of experimental rats were injected with a tranquilizer at 1.0mg and 1.5mg
dose, respectively. The time given in seconds that took them to fall asleep is hereby
given. Use α=0.01 to test if there is significant difference in the effect on the length of
time it took them to fall asleep.

1.0mg dose 9.8 13.2 11.2 9.5 13.0 12.1 9.8 12.3 7.9 10.2
1.5mg dose 12.0 9.8 11.5 13.0 12.5 9.8 10.5

3. The average height of third year high school students in ABC School is 1.52m. A random
sample of 26 students were taken and were found to have a mean height of 1.56m with
a standard deviation of 0.11m. Are the 26 students in the sample significantly taller than
the rest? Test at 0.05 level.

4. A teacher wanted to find out if the calculator-based method of teaching Statistics is more
effective than a lecture method. Two Classes of approximately equal intelligence were
selected. From one class, she considered 15 students with whom she used the
calculator-based method of teaching and from the other class, she considered 14
students with whom she used the lecture method. After several sessions, a test was
given.

Method 𝑛 𝑋̅ SD
Calculator Based (1) 15 28.6 6.0
Lecture (2) 14 21.7 4.5
Based on the result of the test, can we say that the calculator-based method of teaching
is more effective than the lecture method? Use α=0.05.

5. The following are the weights in pounds of 15 students before and after 6 months of
attending aerobics.

Before 158 192 144 243 179 201 165 183 153 170 180 212 169 172 209
After 159 190 140 231 173 199 162 179 152 164 177 207 170 171 196
Test at α=0.05 if aerobics is effective in reducing weights.

6. A sari-sari store is selling 4 brands of shampoo. The owner is interested if there is a

significant difference in the average sales of the four brands of shampoo for one week.
The following data are recorded.
BRAND
A B C D
7 9 2 4
3 8 3 5
5 8 4 7
6 7 5 8
9 6 6 3
4 9 4 4
3 10 2 5

Perform the analysis of variance and test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance that the
average sales of the four brands of shampoo are equal.

7. Below are the midterm (𝑥) and final (𝑦) grades. Determine if there is significant
correlation between the midterm and final grades.

𝑥 75 70 65 90 85 85 80 70 65 90
𝑦 80 75 65 95 90 85 90 75 70 90

8. The following is the ranking of two judges given to the work of 8 artists. Use 𝑟 at 0.05
level of significance to test the null hypothesis that the two judges differ in their opinions
about these artists.

Judge A Judge B
5 8
8 5
4 6
2 4
1 2
7 1
3 3
6 7

9. A certain machine is supposed to mix peanuts, hazelnuts, cashews and pecans in the
ratio 4:3:2:1. A can containing 500 of these mixed nuts was found to have 270 peanuts,
110 hazelnuts, 80 cashews and 40 pecans. At 0.05 level of significance, test the
hypothesis that the machine is giving the nuts at the ratio of 4:3:2:1.

10. Ninety individuals, male and female, were given a test in psychomotor skills and their
scores were classified into high and low. Use the chi-square test of independence at
0.05 level of significance to determine if the sex is associated with the psychomotor
skills.

Sex High Low Total

O E O E
Male 18 28 46
Female 32 12 44
Total 50 40 90

Solution:

a. Formulate Ho (Ho) and Ha (H1)

b. Set the level of significance α, then determine the type of hypothesis test and
the tabular or p-value (from the computer)
c. Set the criterion (When to reject Ho (H0)
 Reject the null Hypothesis if the computed value is greater than the
tabular value
 Reject the null hypothesis if p is less than or equal to α (OT) or α/2
(TT)
Determine and compute for the test statistics

d. Make your decision

e. Formulate your conclusion
