Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a 2001 fantasy film directed by Chris Columbus and
distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is based on J. K. Rowling's 1997 novel of the same name.
This is the first part when mysterious letters start arriving for Harry and knew that he is a wizard
and learns more about the wizarding world. Upon their arrival at Hogwarts, they begin taking all
kinds of classes in magic.
I am not a fan of Harry Potter but many of my friends and family are fun of watching and reading
books of Harry Potter. For me, when I started watching this, it was slow at the beginning and gets
interesting near the end. A boy called Harry Potter who lives in the cupboard under the stairs of a
house owned by Mr and Mrs Dursley with their overly spoiled son called Dudley.
In the first quarter of the book it shows how Harry begins to receive letters which are addressed
to him, even though this alone sounds mysterious Mr and Mrs Dursley don't allow him to read the
letters and will go to any length to stop him. The Dursleys go away to a hut in the middle of the
ocean to ensure no letters can arrive, but at midnight before Harry's birthday a giant man, later on
to be recognized as Hagrid, bursts in and tells Harry he's a wizard.
When Harry hears all this, he doesn’t know what to think. However, everything Hagrid tells him
turns out to be true, and with a joyful heart. He also gives Harry the letter he had been hoping for
weeks it includes a letter to say that Harry will be attending Hogwarts school for Witchcraft and
Wizardry. Harry Potter and friends showed the world a new side of magic that exposed witches
and wizards alike. He quickly becomes best friends with a boy named Ron Weasley, and before
they even make it to Christmas, they break tons of school rules when they attack a troll and prevent
it from killing fellow student Hermione Granger.
After the troll incident, the three become inseparable, and Harry is amazed to have found such
great friends. He is constantly busy trying to stay on top of the mounds of homework, as well as
participating in weekly Quidditch practices. Quidditch is a popular sport among wizards and Harry
is the youngest Quidditch player in over a century. It's also a game Harry loves more than anything
else at school.
The setting of this movie was filmed all around England. The citizens of the United States
welcomed the movie with open minds and open hearts. According to Roger Ebert, an acclaimed
movie reviewer, the biggest challenge Chris Columbus faced was keeping the movie as close to
the book as possible. The worries that the audience faced were put to ease when they saw the
director’s take on the novel they all so dearly loved.
This is basically about a boy who had a miserable childhood. He had to live with his aunt and
uncle, which both hated him because he was different. He was poor and lonely, without friends
and most of the time he got treated like a dog. But suddenly one day he gets a letter which changes
his whole life. He finds out that he is a very famous wizard, that he’s going to Hogwarts and that
he has a fortune on a bank. His life goes from being boring and normal to being a great adventure
CRITIQUE PAPER
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first in what will be a series of big movies, is every
bit as enchanting as it ought to be. To watch it with a large group of children is to enjoy
something of the magic that cinema was invented to capture and convey.
The film is more than two hours long, yet it flashes past in delicious form, this minute
frightening, that moment comic, this minute thunderous, magical and wizardly, that moment
human and reeling with feeling. Harry Potter the movie is an instant classic for a whole
generation its brilliance will seem central, a gleeful preponderance of wonder in a broken world.
The beginning of the film helps the audience to understand the reasons for Harry's social,
psychological, and moral character traits. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone tells the story of
Harry's first of seven years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. So the exposition
isn't only an introduction to this film, but also an introduction to six more films that will
eventually be released. In the exposition, Harry learns he is a wizard. This sets up a cause to
effect organization. Most of the movie is organized in this way. The effect of Harry learning he
is a wizard is him going to Hogwarts, the effect of that is he learns someone is trying to steal the
sorcerer's stone.
This moves the story along and organizes the film. The story is also organized by character. As
Harry learns more about himself and his abilities, the film becomes more interesting and moves
along. The film is presentational. The audience looks in on the film. The actors do not talk to the
audience. If it was representational, it would seem less serious and it would be harder to get
immersed in the plot.
