LESSON PLAN Grade 12 With Notes
I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the Grade 12 students will be able to:
1. Compare and contrast the four movie reviews of the film Heneral Luna;
2. Express appreciation by sharing reactions and insightful understanding of the texts read;
3. Write own opinions based on facts provided.
III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Reading of Learning Objectives
4. Reading of Rules of Behavior
B. Motivating Introduction
Post on the board a blurred image of Heneral Luna and ask the students if they know who it is. If not
guessed, provide descriptions of the character. After guessing, ask the students this question: What part of the
movie did you find most interesting, most striking, or most unforgettable?
C. Lesson Proper
1. Reading the Reviews and Reacting to them
a. Brief Background on the Film Subject
Find out how much the students know about Heneral Antonio Luna.
b. Unlocking Verbal Difficulties
Make the students eliminate stumbling blocks to smooth reading and comprehension by their looking
up the meanings of these expressions:
i. Group 1 from “Epic Movie Shows How the Revolution Assassinated Heneral Luna:”
well-choreographed nascent cliché heroics fossilized hubris
production design expatriates stark fashion desiccated opportunism
ii. Group 2 from “Heneral Luna:”
allegorical dastardly inner turmoil volatile banter
nuanced cohorts snippets grit trifecta
iii. Group 3 from “Heneral Luna Shows Human Side of Hero:”
artistic license spewing curse words superb portrayal comfort zone
iv. Group 4 from “Heneral Luna” (Tsui):
spearheading broached j’accuse anachronism subtlety
treachery lingua franca impunity unflinchingly raucous
c. Understanding the Texts
Make the students note that the four movie reviews critique the same movie, Heneral Luna. Ask them
if they find that the four reviews are all extolling (admiring/ praising) the movie, foregrounding (focusing)
similar/different strengths and flaws, and/or asserting (state/ stress) unique observations.
Post the manila paper to the board with these questions for each group to answer:
i. Review 1 – “Epic Movie Shows How the Revolution Assassinated Heneral Luna”
1. In what ways may the movie be considered “superbly made?”
ii. Review 2- Movie Review: Heneral Luna
1. Which is the most praiseworthy feature of the movie?
iii. Review 3 – ‘Heneral Luna’ Shows Human Side of Hero
1. In what way is Luna depicted (show/portray) as “a selfless patriot in a dangerous age”?
iv. Review 4- ‘Heneral Luna’: Film Review
1. How does the movie show to Filipinos that “heroes are humans, too?”
1. General Comparative Analysis
a. In asserting what a success the historical action movie has been, each of the reviews point out
these artistic merits: a compelling allegorical and relevant story, an impassioned score, an
impassioned sound design/score, masterful cinematography, a “fantastic script,” and John
Arcilla’s stellar performance.
o It simply says that the film gained several recognition and accomplishments because of its story, sound design,
cinematography or visual appeal, script and John Arcilla’s acting.
b. The reviewers are one in praising the acting prowess (ability, talent) of Arcilla, especially in
portraying the whole spectrum of emotions of the larger-than-life general including the
“passionate, sympathetic, battle-weary softer side of the character.” However, the film police
review finds that the rest of the cast, while not weak, had difficulty keeping up “with the gravitas
(seriousness) of John Arcilla’s Luna.”
o In this paragraph, the reviewers share the same opinion about Arcilla’s acting- passionate. He delivered the
emotions of the character very well, from the tough and strong-willed to the sympathetic and soft Heneral Luna.
The opinions about the other cast were not as appealing as John Arcilla though, as they wrote that they were not
able to keep up with Arcilla’s superb performance.
c. It is Clarence Tsui’s review that provides convincing supporting details for his discussion of the
merits (assets, accomplishments, excellences) of the movie.
i. The “technically marvelous” sound design is illustrated by Luna’s table banging
“overpowering the raucous (wild/disorderly) Cabinet meeting,” the guitar mini concert in
the middle and the overall “masterful score.”
ii. Illustrating the well-crafted cinematography is the innovative flashback sequence moving
to the general’s young days, seamlessly moving to different settings as a masterfully
executed visual spectacle.
iii. The most notable artistic element, the “poetic yet conversational” script, features
dialogues seemingly taken from a sonata, and lines so elegant that “curse words sound so
cultured, so tasteful.”
d. Even the film police review, which finds some “erratic pacing (meaning inconsistent stepping
of) problems” in the first act, asserts that Heneral Luna tells “a compelling story – allegorical
(meaning metaphorical and symbolic) and timely to the present day.”
o Even if there was an inconsistent development of problems in the film in the first act, it was able to tell a very
convincing, symbolical and timely story; one that many can relate to, especially in topics such as politics and
government.
e. The story of political intrigue and conspiracy unveils an intellectual and action hero; hence, it
becomes a “tribute to the heroic military commander spearheading (leading) the struggle for
nationhood.”
i. His “brilliance, hubris, and tragic flaw make Luna a tragic hero, victimized by the
Filipinos’ damaged culture (inability to transcend parochial and self-interests).”
ii. Luna was also depicted close to his real-life traits, including his cursing and losing his
temper.
f. Finally, the common message shows the bravery and treachery (betrayal/disloyalty) in war that
has relevance in contemporary politics.
i. El Heneral was assassinated by the Revolution. (Inquirer.net)
ii. Heroes are human, too. (Carmelle Lacuata)
iii. Hen. Luna is a story of “how a dissenting (opposing/ rebelling) voice can get swept away
and perish (die/ pass away) under a wave of egos and personal interest.” (film police
review)
iv. As Luna “battles foreign forces and then adversaries in his own ranks,” his story “mirrors
the chaos of contemporary politics.”
o This means that the film reflects or copy the mess there is in present-day politics while Luna fights foreign
invaders and even own equals or individuals who share the same rank as him.
v. Luna lives the principle: put country before family and everything else.
o It’s obvious why Heneral Luna is one of the heavyweights in the patriotism department. Ultimately, because he
was selfless. He put everything behind for the sake and safety of the country. His name stands in the same line as
other iconic patriots such as Jose Rizal, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo to name a few.
2. Discussing New Concepts
Ask the students the following questions:
1. What are the reviews mainly consist of? Are all of it facts or opinion?
2. Give examples of opinions based on the movie reviews.
Discuss what opinions and facts are. Tell them how they can derive opinions based on a given
fact. Give example for better comprehension.
d. Application
(Group Activity)
Give each group a marker and a manila paper with a name and a picture of one of the following
iconic Filipino superheroes or protagonists in T.V. series: Darna, Cardo Dalisay, Panday, Pedro
Penduko. Tell them to write opinions of their assigned character based on the given facts written on
the top corner of their manila paper. Minimum of five (5) and maximum of ten (10) opinions only.
e. Summary/ Generalization
1. The movie reviews reflect how a great general of the revolution fighting for nationhood
becomes a victim of shallow interests of people in politics and government.
2. The blockbuster movie has great artistic merits: laudable (praiseworthy) script,
choreography, sound/score, great acting especially by Arcilla.
3. It is both a tribute to the great military leader and a projection of the human side of the hero.
IV. Evaluation/ Assessment
Identification. Write F if the statement is fact and O if the statement is opinion on the blank provided before each
number.
F 1. Babies generally start to talk between 18 and 24 months of age.
