S3L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the similarities and differences between
plants, animals, and habitats found within geographic regions (Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal
Plains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau) of Georgia.
b. Construct an explanation of how external features and adaptations (camouflage, hibernation,
migration, mimicry) of animals allow them to survive in their habitat.
Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: When wanting to learn about certain animals that can be found in Journey North, I would
incorporate as much as possible. Students writing to other students about the same thing they find
interesting in a great opportunity for students to want to know other students who also find the same thing
interesting. In Journey North students will be able to track the migration of hummingbirds.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Computer to access website.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: The students will publish their final maps to Journey North website. The information they
gathered will be used to predict where the hummingbirds will go to next. They will also predict where
the hummingbirds will fly to next.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): The map the students create will be an original work
they have created from the information they have gathered. The information they gather will be from
visual aids on the Journey North website. The students will create a map charting the migration
patterns of the hummingbirds.
c. Higher-order thinking: The students are expanding their writing and reading skills when researching
the information, they need to establish the migration of the hummingbirds. They will learn to gather
enough data to come to their own conclusion.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The students
are coming up with their own migration map to show what they have learned from the data they have
gathered.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Throughout the year students will be completing this project. The
student to find their own data and in the end contribute their information for the final classroom submission.
To help with finding the data, students can collaborate with scientists in the website. The students are able to
express their data through visual aids. Representation will be seen through charts and maps the students do
from their information gathered. The students will decide how to track the hummingbirds’ migration. The
students can collaborate with other students to complete the final map the students will submit at the end.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: The students are mentioning the Journey North
website. I will make sure that the website is safe and that I am following the safety policies to protect my
students. After I have reviewed the website, I have discovered that it is a well-known and used website that
many students use. It is funded by several scientists and donors. The final project will be submitted with my
last name’s classroom. That way the privacy of the students will be protected.
Reflective Practice: I will that this activity will help students understand on how to keep records. The students
will learn not to alter the data that is collected. This activity will teach them organization during the course
over time. Extension of this lesson can be to discover other migration patterns of other animals through the
Journey North website. The students can do over an extended period of time. We can also use an Excel
spreadsheet for the students to save their data.
