Content Standard Addressed: S2L1. Students will investigate the life cycles of different living
organisms.
a. Determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a mammal such as a cat
or dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a frog, and an insect such as a
butterfly
Technology Standard Addressed: Digital Citizen

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
For this online project, I am going to use Journey North. Journey North has a variety of pictures and
spotting’s of different types of animals and insects. For this activity, I am going to have my students focus
on the monarch butterfly. On the website, there are pictures of the butterflies in different phases of the life
cycle.
For this lesson, my students and I will first discuss the life cycle of a butterfly thoroughly. We will then use
Journey North to connect those phases of the life cycle with real-life photos. I will then plan an outdoor
field trip when my students can take iPads and search for butterflies in different phases of the life cycle
themselves. If my students have any findings, we will submit them to Journey North. They will then get to
compare their work to other students findings on Journey North.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
We would need iPads and a projector.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: My students will be able to work with peers when they are outside looking for butterflies in
different stages of the life cycle. They will then be able to share their findings with students outside the
classroom and all over the world by posting on Journey North.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project: My students will be able to collect data they find one
butterflies and taking original pictures of the findings.
c. Higher-order thinking: My students will be creating their own products and then comparing their work
to other students work that are on Journey North.
d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: The students
are going to be uploading their findings to Journey North.
