INTRODUCTION

The E n g l i s h phrases i n t h i s book a r e


grouped by s u b j e c t and a r e s e l e c t e d f o r t h e i r
d i r e c t n e s s , b r e v i t y , and r e l e v a n c e t o t h e needs
o f newly a r r i v e d r e s i d e n t s o f t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s .
They a r e , f o r t h e most p a r t , p r e s e n t e d i n t h e
form o f s h o r t , t w o - l i n e d i a l o g u e s .
The p h r a s e s and supplementary v o c a b u l a r y
i n t h e 19 u n i t s c o v e r a wide range o f s i t u a t i o n s
and s e r v e t o i n t r o d u c e new L a o t i a n r e s i d e n t s
t o t h e d a i l y a c t i v i t i e s o f American l i f e . The
two w o r d l i s t s p r o v i d e terms which a r e most f r e -
q u e n t l y needed. I n many p h r a s e s , t h e i m p o r t a n t
E n g l i s h words and t h e i r Lao e q u i v a l e n t s a r e
u n d e r l i n e d . The c a s s e t t e tapes which accompany
t h i s phrasebook a r e a v a i l a b l e s e p a r a t e l y , and
p r o v i d e spoken models o f b o t h t h e E n g l i s h and
Lao p h r a s e s .
As w i t h a l l phrasebooks, t h i s one i s n o t
i n t e n d e d as a s t e p - b y - s t e p t e x t b o o k f o r l e a r n -
ing English. I t i s i n t e n d e d as a handy r e f e r -
ence book f o r immediate use when E n g l i s h phrases
o r words a r e needed.
T h i s phrasebook i s l a r g e l y an a d a p t a t i o n
o f t h e V i e t n a m e s e - E n g l i s h Phrasebook (CAL, 1975)
by Nguyen Hy Quang. I t i s based on needs as
e x p e r i e n c e d by I n d o c h i n e s e f a m i l i e s who have
been a r r i v i n g i n t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s s i n c e 1975.
T h i s L a o t i a n e d i t i o n has been adapted and t r a n s -
l a t e d by Khamchong Luangpraseut. The c a l l i g r a p h y
was a l s o done by Mr. Luangpraseut. Most o f t h e
i l l u s t r a t i o n s were g e n e r o u s l y p r o v i d e d by H a l i n a
Luangpraseut.
