Céline Dion, born in 1968, Canadian singer whose clear, strong, vocals helped make her an
international superstar in the 1990s.
Dion was born in Charlemagne, Québec, the youngest of 14 children of a French Canadian family. She began
performing as a child in a folk music club owned by her parents. At age 12 Dion won the support of Québec pop
promoter René Angelil and released her first album, La voix du Bon Dieu (The Voice of God), in 1981. Dion
quickly became a pop culture phenomenon across French Canada. In 1983 she became the first Canadian
singer to earn a gold record in France for her album, Les chemins de ma maison (The Paths to My House).
In 1989 Dion learned to speak English. The following year, Unison (1990), her first English-language
record, garnered success with three hit singles, "(If There Was) Any Other Way," "Where Does My Heart Beat
Now," and "Have a Heart." In 1991 Dion recorded "Beauty and the Beast," a duet with Peabo Bryson, which
was included in the soundtrack to the Disney animated feature of the same name. This single reached the top
ten on the Billboard magazine popular music charts and earned an Academy Award for best song written for a
motion picture.
Dion's many hit songs in the 1990s included "Love Can Move Mountains," "If You Asked Me To," "Water
From the Moon," "When I Fall In Love," "Think Twice," and ”It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.” Dion's 1996
single, "Because You Loved Me," the theme song for the film Up Close and Personal, became a best-selling
adult contemporary single. Her string of successes with soundtrack songs continued with "My Heart Will Go
On," the theme song to the movie Titanic (1997).
Other albums by Dion include The Colour of My Love (1993), Falling Into You (1996), Let’s Talk About Love
(1997), A New Day Has Come (2002), One Heart (2003), Miracle (2004), and A New Day…Live in Las Vegas

THE CROW THAT TRIED TO BE AN EAGLE
One day a hungry crow was looking for food. He flew here and there and came to a field. In the field he
found some sheep were grazing. Suddenly an eagle flew down and carried off a small lamb with its powerful
claws.
“Just look at that eagle!” the crow exclaimed.
“He has plenty to eat. I must do the same and catch a lamb for myself.” He thought for a while and
decided on something else. “No, I’ll catch a big sheep instead, and I will be able to eat even more!”
He flew towards the flock of sheep. He watched and searched which one was the biggest. When he had
found the prey, he pounced on it with his claws. He tried to carry it off, but it was too big and heavy. He tried
again and again, but he could not lift the sheep.
The shepherd saw what the crow was trying to do. He rushed towards the crow with his stick and
shouted, “Go away, you silly crow! Leave my sheep alone or you will die!”
The crow was scared. He tried to fly away, but his claws had gotten stuck in the sheep’s wool. The
shepherd caught the crow and put him into a cage. The shepherd wanted to teach him a lesson.

WHAT IS AN ICEBERG?
An iceberg is a great piece of ice floating in the sea. 'Berg' is the German word for `mountain.' In the
coldest parts of the earth, around the North and South Poles, land and sea are both covered by layers of ice,
more than 300 metres deep at the centre.
Tongues of ice, called glaciers, stretch out into the open sea. The sea water melts the bottom parts of these
glaciers, then the top part moves into the water with a great noise. The great piece of ice sinks for a short time
under the surface then it rises again, and floats away as a new iceberg. Some icebergs are many miles long, and
travel for thousands of miles and several years before they finally melt. The part of an iceberg which can be seen
above the water is only about one-ninth of the total size. The rest is hidden under the waves.
One of the world's worst disasters at sea was in 1912 when the liner 'Titanic' hit an iceberg and sank on

Text 16. Report Text (for numbers 38, 39, 40, 41)
ALLIGATOR
Alligator (Spanish el lagarto,”the lizard”), common name for two carnivorous reptiles in the crocodilian
order. Alligators and their close relatives the caimans have broad, flat, and rounded snouts, as opposed to the
longer, sharper snouts of other crocodilians; also unlike other crocodilians, their lower teeth cannot be seen
when their mouths are closed. Alligators feed on fish, frogs, snakes, turtles, birds, mammals, and carrion. In
North America they are also known to attack humans occasionally. Alligators can survive a wider range of
temperatures than other crocodilians, and they are found in more temperate regions. Their breeding season is
generally restricted to spring.
When alligators search for a mate they bellow often, perhaps to announce their presence to females
and to warn other males to stay away. Unwanted intruders are confronted with ritual gaping, lunging, and
hissing, but courtship behavior is sedate. After mating, the male seeks his own territory while the female builds
a nest of mud and plants nearby, above flood level. The eggs, from 30 to 60 in a clutch, are covered with mud
and vegetational debris. The female stands guard as the eggs incubate in the heat from this decaying
vegetation and from the sun. When the eggs are ready to hatch, in about 60 days, the young begin to croak
softly within the egg. The female may then assist the young in escaping from the nest and may even carry
them in her mouth to the water's edge. The female may remain near her young for a year or more. A young
alligator in distress will give a series of sharp croaks that may quickly bring the female to investigate.
Only two species of alligator exist: the Chinese alligator and the American alligator. The Chinese
alligator makes its home in the Yangtze River Basin of China. It is more timid and much smaller than the
American alligator, seldom exceeding 2.5 m (8 ft) in length, and is considered little threat to humans. The
American alligator lives mainly in freshwater swamps, lakes, and bayous in the southeastern United States, but
it ranges as far west as the Río Grande in Texas. It is larger, reaching up to about 6 m (about 20 ft) in length,
and is potentially dangerous to humans. Attacks occur infrequently, usually in areas where humans have
recently encroached on alligator habitat or where alligators have become accustomed to the presence of
humans. Hunted for generations both for sport and for its hide, populations of the American alligator dwindled
until, in 1967, it was declared an endangered species. Under this protection it made a strong comeback and,
little more than a decade later, hunting of the American alligator was again allowed in some states.
