What did you do in the The Wayland Players – 70 and still going strong
Cold War, Daddy?
(Or Mummy?)
Do you remember RAF Watton during the 1950s and 1960s?
Can you remember the missiles at North Pickenham? Do you
recall seeing, or even working on, the Bloodhound site at
Griston? What about the highly classified aircraft operating from
Watton? I am researching the Cold War period as it affected the
local area and would very much like to hear from anyone who
can remember that time - or even remember their parents talking
about it.
The Cold War covered roughly the period between 1948 and
1990; the RAF station had ceased regular flying by about 1970,
but had been heavily involved in “Cold War activities” up until
then. Is there someone out there who can remember “Ban the
Bomb”- type protests in the local area? Was STANTA busier
then? There were several more military airfields in Norfolk and
Suffolk at that time - did your hens lay fewer eggs because of
aircraft activity at Watton or jets flying overhead? Can you
recall seeing lots of RAF airmen at the Railway Station - or
perhaps you were one?
This is an important period in our recent past and I think there
are as yet untold stories about it. If you know anything relevant
or of interest, I would be most grateful if you would telephone
me, George Collins, on 01953 884649.
