looks and if its between um 2am and noon and the screen-savers active it

computer lap got my headphones

known all of J.J.5 machines were gonna start beeping at four in the morning would

have got up and went in the other room laughter

mean the-the total on-and-and tle amount of work looked

eli urn bug counts little

scary but the-the fact that

progress was happening on Tuesday was fairly encouraging uh

and then people just really kicked in high gear for these last few days to try and make the

eadline and the Java people you know did wizardly and amazing things and urn the Mac
people ran into lot of unexpected
snags
and uh even-a even this morning was going

ooh doesnt look like the Macs gonna make it maybe well just ship just the uh UNIX

and the windows version the Mac will come out later but they uh they havent quite

pulled the rabbit out of the hat but theyre holding the rabbit in their hands and theyre

ready to pull him out of the hat so it looks like the Macs gonna come-come in but its

basically you know when you dont sleep you can get lot done and its-its not the way

like to uh to get things done but in this case where the date-the deadlines are kind of

given to us and-and we have to make the work fit into that time sometimes you dont have

much choice in the matter So things look pretty good Um dont think were gonna be

quite all issues-resolved by three but close enough declare And

thirty today to victory

declaring victory is an important and-and fun thing to do Because if

you dont declare

then everyone worked and we

Biggest issues

Well the-theres this whole deal with Netscape trying to do the license thats the least

painful to it but still at the same time is the most enabling and-and to
trying figure out

where to draw that line And ev-I how

mean its really clear to thaw license which the

net will just except and people will do development on it Its really clear how to thaw

license that makes Netscape very very safe and then you know ho-how-where do they

thaw the line I-I think that thats i-watching-watching Netscape finally get brave enough

to push it over the other direction is-is pretty interesting Uh the cynic in me says theyre

Hallucinating and uh laughs like somehow needed to have my blood purified by some

kind of kidney machine or something because it seemed like them were lot of toxins

from looking at bad files Um i-it was the case that because we thought we would never

ever ship our development environment we never realized we were gonna do this free-

source thing weve taken everything that came on the CDs that uh that makes world

work code warrior and weve put it into the tree which means its checked in so we

could check out we always have exactly

it the right development environment But our

development environment gradually grew away from what they shipped It had one set of

tools one set of source one set of all different Of course nobody outside was ever going

to be able to build with that So we had to make it build from straight off the CDs That

meant had to switch to totally different version of power plant and had to take all of

the-we have something like 60 and theyre at the stuff in

projects all pointing thats our

tree had to point it at the stuff that user would have installed And that meant had to

check in
every project had to check it
out had to make these changes and had to
put

it back in And uh not to mention the fact that plant has lot So
pow-power changed all

these had be modified

files to to understand this new world routines have been renamed

and gone away and had new parameters and-and uh didnt even
it built it was ridiculous

People had said Oh yeah built with the new power plant its really easy They jj4

to me So uh it took really long time think was up for

up for like um 40 hours

probably somewhere between 36 and 40 hours Now of course that wasnt all me

working cause had to wait for Gordon to check in and had to wait for Cathy to check

in and had to wait for Chris to check in and do the stuff And had the-I
security finally

had the baton and could do uh of which Id done

my stuff some in advance because

got in some files before them and then some files after themBut you know four a.m

this morning and Ive got one error left and Im not even close to finding out if can link

or not and Im just going Uuuh know Pinks gonna come in in the morning uuuh

tree or we cant ship So if were to check in even though knew it wouldnt link

which is really bad thing If you check in and you break in and you break the tree you

doing so-its like sin Youve done something horrible because youve stopped

everyone else from making something But knew that if did that seventeen hundred

files would go away from our problem right which was more than half of the files we had

left So did it checked in even though knew was going to break the tree knowing

that
Cathy and Pink would come in in the morning and fix it Its a-its in like the last

eight years of work at different companies its the first time ever checked in knowing

was going break the tree and was

to it
very personally embarrassing But uh Pink came

in and saved the day
