Comparing Rates
When comparing rates, you must find the unit rate for
each quantity first

à 5 ÷ 4 = 1.25 ! $1.25 per box
4 box
She found donuts on sale for $4.50 for 3 boxes. Which
is the better buy, considering she only wants to
purchase one box?
4.50 dollars à 4.50 ÷ 3 = 1.50
! $1.50 per box
3 box
The cookies are the better buy, as they are cheaper, $1.25
per box, as opposed to $1.50 per box for the donuts.
Practice
Maddie and Jesse are both delivering
newspapers. Maddie delivers 189 newspapers in
3 hours. Jesse delivers 330 newspapers in 5
hours. Who delivers papers quicker?
Maddie: 189 papers ÷ 3 hours = 63 papers per hour
You must find the unit rate for each quantity first, then
subtract the smaller amount from the larger amount.
