Comparing Rates

When comparing rates, you must find the unit rate for
each quantity first

Example: Given the following speeds, which is faster?


A. 50 miles in 2 hours
B. 60 miles in 3 hours

A. 50 ÷ 2 = 25 mph
B. 60 ÷ 3 = 20 mph
Speed A is faster than Speed B
Evelyn is shopping for snacks. Chocolate chip cookies
cost $5 for 4 boxes. What is the unit rate?

5 dollars
à 5 ÷ 4 = 1.25 ! $1.25 per box
4 box
She found donuts on sale for $4.50 for 3 boxes. Which
is the better buy, considering she only wants to
purchase one box?
4.50 dollars à 4.50 ÷ 3 = 1.50
! $1.50 per box
3 box
The cookies are the better buy, as they are cheaper, $1.25
per box, as opposed to $1.50 per box for the donuts.
Practice
Maddie and Jesse are both delivering
newspapers. Maddie delivers 189 newspapers in
3 hours. Jesse delivers 330 newspapers in 5
hours. Who delivers papers quicker?

Maddie: 189 papers ÷ 3 hours = 63 papers per hour

Jesse: 330 papers ÷ 5 hours = 66 papers per hour

Jesse delivers papers quicker (66 per hour vs. 63 per


hour)
Bradley needs to purchase a water bottle. He goes to
CVS, and finds the following options:

SMART Water – 4 bottles for $7.88


Fiji – 3 bottles for $5.97

Which is the better buy? By how much?



SMART Water: 7.88 ÷ 4 = $1.97 each
Fiji: 5.97 ÷ 3 = $1.99 each
SMART Water is the better buy. It is $0.02, or
2 cents cheaper per bottle than Fiji.
Finding the Difference in Rates

You must find the unit rate for each quantity first, then
subtract the smaller amount from the larger amount.

Example: Luke scored 84 goals in 12 minutes, while Marco


scored 90 goals in 15 minutes. Who scored goals at a
faster rate? By how much?

Luke: 84 ÷ 12 = 7 goals per minute
Marco: 90 ÷ 15 = 6 goals per minute

Luke scores goals at a faster rate, by 1 goal per minute.


Practice
Food Mart sells two brands of Milk. Brand A
contains 8 fluid ounces and costs $1.44. Brand B
contains 12 fluid ounces and costs $1.80. What is
the difference in costs, in dollars, per fluid ounce
between the two brands of milk?

Brand A: 1.44 ÷ 8 = $0.18 per fluid ounce


Brand B: 1.80 ÷ 12 = $0.15 per fluid ounce

Brand B is $0.03 cheaper per fluid ounce than Brand A


Practice
Alice biked ½ mile in 10 minutes. Janice biked
2/ mile in 20 minutes. What was the difference

in their speeds, in miles per hour?

Alice: 3 miles per hour

Janice: 2 miles per hour

Alice biked 1 mile per hour faster than Janice


Practice
Jeremy is deciding between three different apartments.
The table below shows the size and monthly rental price
for each, in dollars. What is the difference in price per
square meter from the best deal to the worst?

Apt. A: 840 ÷ 75 = $11.20 per square meter


Apt. B: 1050 ÷ 84 = $12.50 per square meter
Apt. C: 1225 ÷ 102 = $12.01 per square meter
Apt. A, the best deal, is $1.30 cheaper per square meter than
Apt. B, which is the worst buy.
