Equations from Tables

Notes
If you are given a table, and the relationship between the
independent variable and dependent variable are
proportional, you can create an equation that represents
the relationship between both variables.

y = kx

x y
k = y/x
2 8 k = 8/2
3 12 k=4
11 44
y = 4x
Create an equation to represent the relationship in the
table.

x y
10 15
k = 15/10 = 1.5
23 34.5
98 147 y = 1.5x
Practice
Create an equation to represent the relationship in the
table.

# of donuts Total cost ($)

6 5.94
k = 5.94/6 = 0.99
12 11.88
24 23.76
y = 0.99x
Find the constant of proportionality (k) for the table
below, and create an equation:

# of minutes played 16 20 40 44
Points scored 12 15 30 33

k = y/x

k = 12/16
k = 0.75
y = 0.75x
