McDonalds in Moscow and Coke in China will do more to create a global culture than
I think Benjamin Barber is trying to say that states and nations are more likely to be
united under global culture rather than government pushed militarization. This is because when
people have something they can relate to there is a common ground that they both find and have
some level of understanding with one another. I also think this statement means that when
governments try to enforce policy and rules among the people it does not work well verse when
the people actually want to come together in unity. By Barber saying that a McDonalds in
Moscow and a coke in China he is directly implying that popular culture can unify even the two
most indifferent nations. A global trend that has led to this prediction is stated exactly in the
statement. There is a McDonalds in almost every single nation on the planet. For example, if I
were to go to Fallon, Nevada and order chicken nuggets with a large fry and sprite. I can most
likely fly to Rome, Italy and order the same meal at a McDonalds because it is something that
the two vastly different locations have in common with each other and in turn can be looked at as
unity. McDonalds is a global brand so it has the power to create unity between people. Another
global trend that seem to lead to this prediction is fashion. The reason fashion is a global trend is
because it brings many different cultures together from all different places of the world. Fashion
as a global trend speaks to |Barbers statement because it is another example of what he is trying
to say in that even what seems like the most insignificant part of culture can create unity. An
example of fashion being a unifying global trend would be current fashion trends. What I mean
by this is that I could find the same shoes and clothes in the United States as I could in China. An
example of how military colonization failed to create a global culture would be that of Adolf
Hitler and the Nazis. Hitler coming into power over Germany with backing by his Nazi army
wanted to take control over the world. He wanted world domination and believed he could
achieve that through military colonization. However, as history would prove his plan did not
work out for him and he was defeated. In a twisted way Hitler did create unity between other
I do not believe it is possible to create a global culture with all nations. The reason I
think this is because there are so many different people in the world. People who hold different
values, think differently, act differently, and have different customs. I think creating a global
culture seems desirable because then all people would be on the same page and in agreement. It
would seem as if everything from politics, trade, economies, and everything in between would
become much easier if there was a basic understanding among all people. The drawbacks to
creating a global culture could possibly be that it could decrease the individuality and
power struggle. What I mean by this is that because there is one culture for the entire planet one
nation may feel the need to become the leader or most powerful nation. Even though we see that
power struggle in todays nations, but I think it would become more apparent with a global
culture.
