1 - Introduction
Actaris proposes a new technical solution to provide new possibilities for remote/local
reading of the Corus. A new optional board with two independant RS485 ports offers
increased communication capabilities with modems, RTUs, and gas chromatographs
(future option).
The RS485 board can be used in hazardous area and up to 4 Corus can be
connected to the same modem (or RTU or gas chromatograph). The distance between
the modem (or RTU) in safe area and the Corus depends on the number of Corus (1 to
4) and the electrical characteristics (linear L,C) and is at least 200m.
The user can select the speed and other communication parameters for each of the
two ports, including the choice of the protocol (Modbus or I-Flag).

All devices on the same RS485 bus must have the same speed and data format.
Commissioning of the RS485 board is very simple and retrofit (addition of an RS485
board on an existing Corus) is possible on site.
All communication ports of Corus (optical, RS232, two RS485) can be used
simultaneously without restriction.

2 - Technical description
2-1: Main characteristics:
ATEX internal board with two independant RS485 ports
ATEX compatibility with a maximum of 4 Corus connected on the same RS485
bus and a distance of 200m with the IS interface
Connection on the optional slot (J3 - CPU board)
Two wires passive RS485 ports half-duplex
Simultaneous communication on all ports without restriction
Configurable speed up to 38400 bauds
Configurable protocol (Modbus RTU and/or I-Flag)
The two ports are passive meaning that the ports must be powered by the intrinsic
safety interface that will be connected on the Corus through the RS485 ports. Each port
is isolated separately and can be connected to two different materials (modems, RTUs,
PCs, etc).
A separate power supply and barrier (or ISB+) must be used for the second port.
Depending on the cables, interfaces, and the number of Corus on the RS485 bus,
the ATEX classification (IIC, IIB or IIA) of the Corus can change. More details on
maximal allowed parameters can be found in chapter 6. The classification with a single
Corus and the above mentioned material (Z961 interface and BXNE31 power supply)
remains IIC.

3 Installation procedure for new Corus delivered with the
RS485 board inside
Plug the battery of the Corus
Wait for 10 seconds
Check that the RS485 cable is connected properly to the intrinsic safety interface
Configure the communication port with Wincor software or with the keyboard of
the Corus in menu Config , Communication. See specific section of the
chapter 4.

6) Configuration of the RS485 board, using the keyboard of the Corus.
The keyboard in menu Config can also set all parameters of the RS485 board.
The sub-menu Communication proposes a list of the available ports (if the optional
RS485 is not plugged then the list shows only the RS232 port):

Select with the keyboard the port to configure with the arrows and then press on OK to
access to the following submenu. The parameters to configure on the RS485 ports are:
Modbus: True, False (when selecting False, the Corus will use the default I-Flag
protocol)
Modbus address: from 1 to 247 (used to identify the Corus when connecting
several devices in a RS485 bus. It is to be noted that after the ATEX interface
more Modbus devices can be added to the RS485 bus. The limitation to 4
devices concerns only the Corus in hazardous area
Communication speed: 300 to 38400 (300 , 600 , 1200 , 2400 , 4800 , 9600,
19200 , 38400)
Number of bits: 7 or 8
Parity: None, Even, Odd
Timeout: 0 to 65535 ms
The parameters can be programmed through the keyboard. After selecting a parameter
to change, the value of the parameter is selected from a list or the numerical value is set
with the keyboard.

The function of each key is described below:
After setting the value you can confirm the selection with OK button. If by mistake the
selected parameter is not the right one or if there is any other mistake, you can restore
previous setting by canceling in the following menu where a confirmation is requested.
The use of the keys in the confirmation menu is described below:

5 Battery lifetime with the RS485 board
The impact on the autonomy of the Corus when using the RS485 is not significant. The
table below gives indicative (see notes) autonomy of the Corus with its internal battery,
according to the 3 main parameters with an impact on autonomy: analogue
measurements acquisition period, volume retransmission frequency through pulse
outputs, communication through the RS485 ports.
Note 1:
The values provided in this table correspond to typical values in average conditions of use;
They are calculated with a 30% margin to take into account the possible variations of operating
conditions that could impact the consumption of the product (temperature, humidity, self-
discharge of the battery, )
Note 2:
The frequency of retransmissions indicated in the table corresponds to average frequency on the
two outputs, when both channels are configured for pulses.
Note 3:
In case of activation of digital output as ALARM output, the consumption of the device can be
impacted, specially in Standard mode for which the output is activated as long as the alarm is
active. Then, it is recommended to use preferably the limited mode or to use CORUS with an
external power supply module if Standard mode is required.

6 Safety Instructions
6 1: General
The Corus with the RS485 optional board has the ATEX certification and is approved
according to 94/9/CE directive related to introduction of material in explosive
atmosphere area.
The respect of this directive is mandatory and is now included in the CE marking.
The Corus equipped with its internal RS485 board is approved as category 1 equipment
and is then suitable for use in zone 0 (areas with permanent presence of gas in normal
operation)
The connectors J1 and J3 of the RS485 board can be connected only to RS485
bus.
Plug first the RS485 board into the Corus, before connection to the IS interface.
Concerning bus cable, connect first the Corus side and finally as last action,
connect the bus cable on IS interface side.
When equipped with the RS485 board, the classification of the whole material is
suitable for use in zone 0. The classification to Group IIC, IIB or IIA will depend
from the interface and the cables that will be connected on RS485 ports. See
electrical parameters for each case in ATEX certificate variation. The user is
responsible for the compatibility of the material that will be connected on the
RS485 ports and must check the compatibility with electrical parameters of Corus
and put the suitable marking on the products.

Actaris did calculate the compatibility for two typical cases:
For the case B with 4 Corus one RS485 boards of each Corus is connected to the
unique Z961 and to the unique BXNE31.
Cable length between the Corus and the RS485 IS (intrinsic safe insulating)
interfaces has an impact on the ATEX certification. The linear L and C of the
cables multiplied by the length of the cable must be added to the parameters of
the IS interface to evaluate the compatibility with electrical parameters defined in
the ATEX certificate. The length of the cable between the IS interface and the PC
or the RTU has no impact on ATEX compatibility.
The above calculations (A and B cases) have been made with 200m cables
between each Corus and the Z961. The table below gives for the two cases the
maximal linear L of the cable and the maximal linear C:
