While on vacation in
Virginia last week, I had an
experience that made me
reflect on this season of
Christmas preparation. As
some of you already
know, my family took the
opportunity on Black
Friday to enjoy some
pottery painting. We were
working near the counter
where the manager had
his computer, on which he
was playing Christmas
music. Though I had not
realized it at first, all of the
music being played was
just instrumental. At one
point, a Christmas song
with singing began to
play. The manager
promptly came to the
computer and skipped to
the next song, all while

There are great opportunities arranged for you

to help in our local schools. Posted in the hallway beside the Seeker's classroom in the Deen
Building is a display of opportunities to help
with tutoring or to read to a child. Background
check forms are posted there as well. Please
consider how you can offer your time in this
way to impact the children in our community.
Join us on December
14th for our Youth
and Childrens
Christmas Program at
6:30 pm. We will have
a chili supper with all
the fixings, even
DESSERT! The kids
always put on a great
show, you wont
want to miss out!
We are looking for a
few people to help
serve hot dogs, drinks
and chips at Wills Point
Middle School on the
evening of Tuesday,
December 6, 5:30-6:15 p.m. We will be doing
this to serve the children and parents as the
school has their Family Curriculum Night. Please
call the church office if you are willing to help.

Youth group has resumed its regular schedule!

Join us Wednesday nights from 5:30 pm until
7:30 pm. We have several new opportunities
for the kids! Dinner is provided, as well as a

Have you
ever wanted
to
experience
for yourself
the land of
our Lord?
Here is your chance to literally walk where Jesus
walked. Pastor Dave is coordinating a trip to the
Holy Land. You will have the opportunity to
share the experience with your pastor and
other pilgrims from your congregation. The 10day trip will depart on November 13, 2017 from
Dallas. An outline of the trip can be found by
going to eo.travelwithus.com and searching the
Holy Land Classic 2017 trip. Brochures with
details are available at the church office. Sherri
Rowe has also prepared a comprehensive cost
estimate to supplement the brochure. Travelers
who register by Dec. 13 will receive the best
discounts. Dont miss this opportunity to see
and learn about the land of the Bible.

RMUMC
hosted an
ERT Training
on October
29. We had a
good turn out
and 7
members are
now trained
for an Emergency Response team. Some
of the attendees are pictured here. Wed
like to thank all the participants, and the
trainers as well.

Food Drive
We have sponsored the Middle
School back pack program for
many years now. This
vital program sends backpacks
filled with food home each
weekend with students in
need. We have recently found
that the Junior High is in desperate need of the food items as well. Items
should be easily opened and consumed by a
child (nothing requiring a can opener). Small
containers and single-servings are helpful, as
well. These can include (but are not limited to)
cracker packs, pop top meal cups, cups of fruit,
single serve cereal, and so forth. Any and all
help is greatly appreciated. I was hungry, and
you gave me food. (Matthew 25:35)

Christmas Day join us for a combined worship service at 10:30 a.m. What
a great way to celebrate the birth of Jesus with your church family!

(cont. from pg. 1)

making his verbal apology to the songs artist, Sorry, no words allowed. I mentally shrugged it
off for the moment, but before long the same thing happened again. Without delay, the manager
made his way to the computer and skipped the song with lyrics. While doing so he made a
comment to someone nearby about how he doesnt like Christmas music with the words.
I have pondered this in the days since. It makes me wonder why the words to Christmas songs
were troublesome for this person. I certainly dont want to jump to conclusions; there may be a
variety of reasons for his actions. Maybe he doesnt like words to any songs. Perhaps he didnt
want them in his place of business. While I do not presume to know the underlying reason, his
behavior was quite clear. This person clearly enjoyed the tunes to Christmas music (he was
whistling along with the music all the while). Nevertheless, he did not want the lyrics to
accompany the tunes, at least not in that place and time.
What meaning, then, is in a tune without lyrics? Obviously that depends on the tune and the
person. Without question, a tune by itself can elicit in our minds the lyrics that are commonly
associated with it. This is true with any type of music, but it is only true if the lyrics have first
become ingrained in our minds. If this is not the case, a tune can be nothing more than a pleasant
sound in the listeners ear. It is just beautiful music with no particular meaning attached. Tunes do
not necessarily carry an inherent message. Many of our familiar hymns of the church are written to
tunes that were not Christian in origin. (For a good seasonal example, look up the lyrics to
Greensleeves.) My point is this: the intended message of a song can be missed if the tune is
unaccompanied by words. As it is with a song, so it is also with our witness.
Part of our challenge as disciples of Jesus Christ is to be explicit in our message. It is much easier to
only be suggestive, dropping hints and hoping that people get the point. The vast majority of our
culture is celebrating at this time of year; what they are celebrating could be a variety of things. If
we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, we need to make sure we are not just humming the
tune. Our witness needs to be explicit. We have a message of someone who is truly worth
celebrating, and we dont want the message to be missed. The message of Jesus is not just any old
good news; it is the best news! Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let every heart prepare him
room. That, my friends, is a message worth singing!
