Aedes aegypti is a vector parasite of the Dengue. New method to
control the population of this insect is necessary. In the present

work we evaluated the potential of extract from Cestrum nocturnum

as larvicide. Methanol extract outstand as highly active larvicide,
achieving 100 % larval mortality in 24 hours when tested in the
concentration of 45 g/mL (soxhlet) and 25 g/mL (percolation).
Any extract exhibiting significant larvicide activity was further
fractioned and the fraction tested according to the WHO protocol.
One fraction derived from methanol extract present remarkable
LC100 at 12 g/mL. LC50 of methanol extract and active fraction
were found 14 g/mL and 6 g/mL respectively. These fractions
will be submitted to further fractions aiming to identify the
molecules responsible for the larvicide activity.
Insecticidal potential of Cestrum sp. (Solanaceae: Solanales)
against Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum (Herbst)
(Coleoptera- Tenebrionidae)

DECCAN CURRENT SCIENCE, 3(2): 155-161. Jalna, M.S. India.
ISSN:0975-3040
Ethanol extract of plants Cestrum nocturnum and Cestrum diurnum
were studied for their effect on the stored grain pest Tribolium
confusum and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). Effect of the plants
extract on duration of last instars larval period, % of emergence,
weight and mortality of T. castaneum and T. confusum was
evaluated and statistical analysed and graphically presented.
Insecticidal effect varies with cestrum species. Comparatively
alcoholic extract showed remarkable insecticidal activity than the
aqueous extract against Tribolium sp. Extract incorporated diet
when fed to larvae the growth was significantly inhibited.
Development of insect was abstracted due to the extracts of
Cestrum sp. These plant extracts could be useful for controlling the
store grain pest T. castaneum and T. confusum.
Haematological changes in the fish Cyprinus carpio intoxicated

ISSN : 0972-995X
The sub-lethal concentration of the active principal of two piscicidal
plants viz. Cestrum nocturnum (2.8 mg-1) and Cestrum diurnum
(3.2 mg-1) induced the haematological changes in a freshwater fish
Cyprinus carpio. Behavioural activities such as erratic swimming,
loss of reflex, hyperventilation increased surfacing and jerk
movements were observed. The total number of erythrocytes,
leukocytes, and haemoglobin concentration and packed cell volume
declined while erythrocytes sedimentation rate and related
parameters like MCH, MCHC, MCV altered with exposure. Since
the plant toxins influence cell integrity and hemopoiesis, the oxygen

carrying capacity of blood was decreased, consequently

thermodynamic and metabolic activity in fish was disturbed,
therefore Cestrum species seems to be Karyocytophilic and
Cytokaryophilic toxins to the fish.

major thalassemia is a congenital hemolytic anemia caused by
defects in -globin chain synthesis. The globin chain that is
produced in excess is responsible for the ineffective erythropoiesis
and shortened red blood cell (RBC) survival. The present study
includes the prevalence of red cell alloimmunization in repeatedly
transfused patients with - Thalassemia in Solapur District,
Maharashtra, India. A cross sectional descriptive study was
conducted over one year period from January 2010 to December
2010 at Smt. Gopabai Damani Blood Bank (Indian Red Cross
Society) Solapur, Maharashtra, India. A total of 74 Thalassemia
patients receiving multiple blood transfusions at intervals of 2 to 4
weeks, or who had received at least 20 transfusions, were included
in this study. The diagnosis of Thalassemia was confirmed by
patients standard hemoglobin electrophoresis Reports Clinical

transfusion records of 74 Thalassemia patients who fulfilled the

criteria were analyzed for the presence of allo-immunization, their
antibody specificity and the time interval of RBC immunization
from start of transfusion. Ethnic background, status of splenectomy,
age at start of transfusion and the number of blood units received
were also recorded. Laboratory investigations using standard blood
bank methods, serum was analyzed prior to each transfusion to
detect new antibodies to RBC antigens. All pre transfusion sera
were also tested to determine their phenotype for the following
blood group systems: ABO; Rhesus (D, C, E, c, and e); Kell (K, k),
Kidd (Kpa, Kpb) and Duffy (Fya, Fyb). Clinical and laboratory data
were collected and analyzed to find out the frequency, pattern and
factors influencing red cell immunization secondary to multiple
blood transfusions in these patients.

Bioscience Discovery, Volume 3, Number 1, Pp 97-100 Jan. 2012
ISSN: 2231-024X (Online) ISSN: 2229-3469 (Print)
Indian house sparrow, Passer domesticus indicus is a symbiotic bird
species with human habitation. Its vanishing population created
awareness among peoples. Our changing life style and loss of
nesting site proved a major cause of disappearance of sparrow.
Many people try to provide non scientific artificial nest box for
these bird in India. So, we experimented with the various design of
Standard European sparrow nest box and presented ideal nest box
designed which improves the nesting and breeding potential in
urban area. Improved dimensions are 15.24 cm length and 12.7 cm

width. Depth was reduced to 7.62 cm. We also able to improve the
aesthetic look of these boxes which lead to increased acceptance by
common people for their fixing around their houses. We found that
availability of nesting material and height of nest box installation
would not affect the nesting attempt by Indian sparrow. This
improved designed of nest box will definitely help people,
organizations and groups in their attempt to increase sparrow
population.

was recorded from fresh water in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India.
Body shape of O. susheelum n. sp. is ellipsoid with broad posterior
and narrow anterior end. Two large, ovoid macronuclei and Adoral
zone of membranell running one half of the body length and
presence of four to five contractile vacuoles are the distinguishing
characters, separating this species from previously described
species.
Cestrum nocturnum (L) a prospective piscicide for control of

Recent trends in Fisheries Volume-1, Issue-1 Pp 14-17 ISSN:
2319474X (Print); 23194758 (Online)
Piscicidal activity of methanolic extract of Cestrum
nocturnum leaves against predatory fish Channa punctatus and their
behavioural changes were investigated. C. nocturnum leaves extract
shows the remarkable piscicidal activity. It shows there was
significant negative correlation between LC50 values and exposure
periods when observed till 72 hr. During the toxicity experiment the
fish shows the behavioral changes such as suffocation, rapid
movement, and spiraling and convulsion period to death. Piscicidal
activities show their dependence with concentration and time. This
piscicidal activity may be due to their adverse effect on respiratory
as well as energy production of fish. During bioassay experiments,
a phenomenon of recovery was observed in stupefied fishes when
fishes were shifted to untreated water after showing a partial
symptom of death at LC100 dose. This indicates the tolerance and
detoxifying capacity of fish to toxic principal. This nature of the
fish stupefying property of C. nocturnum extracts could be
advantageous in aquaculture for fish catching and releasing into
new isolated site.

A survey was carried out to investigate the prevalence of hard tick
species (Acari: Ixodidae) on cattle in Sinner Diary farms at Nashik
district, India. A total of 1364 (958 caw and 305 buffaloes) post
acaricide treated animals were selected and examined for the
prevalence of tick infestation. The effect of host, breed, health
status, sex, age, coat colour on tick infestation was recorded.
Prominently Boophilus, Amblyomma and Hyalomma spp were
found on caw and buffalo. Where age and sex of host play non
significant role in prevalence of tick infestation, while breed of the
host and health status are important parameters found to be
significantly affecting tick prevalence. The routine acaricide
treatment at local level is found ineffective in controlling tick
infestation. This may be due to use of unspecific acaricide, wrong
method of application and increased resistance in tick. This research
focuses on necessity of integrated tick management Programme and
awareness at national level.
