2016 Preview
In each of the past three seasons, the Ohio Northern football
team has increased its win total from the year before.
After a 4-win season in 2012, the Polar Bears won six games in
2013, seven games in 2014 and posted a 9-3 record with a playoff
victory last year.
Thirteenth-year head coach Dean Paul hopes his group can
continue that upward trajectory again in 2016.
ONU returns 32 lettermen and 13 starters from last years team
that finished second in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 7-2 mark
and advanced to the second round of the NCAA III Playoffs.
Prognosticators in several national publications also have high
regards for the Polar Bears, as the Sporting News College Football
magazine has ONU ranked No. 10 and Lindys Sports College
Football Preview magazine has Ohio Northern ranked No. 11 in their
preseason polls.
ONU is also ranked No. 22 in the D3football.com preseason poll.
We feel optimistic about out upcoming season, Paul said. We
have improved each of the past three seasons. Both in the number of
wins and how competitive we were as a team, we were better each
year. The challenge for this years team is to continue to build.
We have the opportunity and we believe the talent and depth
to do that. Its up to the players and coaching staff to work hard and
execute and get it done.
Northern returns five starters on the offensive side of the ball,
seven starters on defense and All-Conference honorees at punter
and kick returner.
Depth abounds on special teams as two kickers, a punter return
and both returners are back.
Here is a breakdown of the 2016 Ohio Northern football team, by
position:
Offensive Line
The Polar Bears return two starters on the offensive line positions,
led by senior Sam Shook at right tackle.
Shook started all 12 games last season and sophomore Kyle
Gonterman started the final five games at right guard.
Seniors Aaron Honious, Garrett Newman and Dan Warren
and juniors Cody Clayton, Austin Hale and Carter Kemper lead
a list of 12 returners and some newcomers who will also vie for a
starting position.
We have a good group of returning guys up front, Paul said.
The talent level is solid. We have two established guys back and
have some other guys that we believe are ready to take advantage of
their opportunity to grab the other three spots.
Offensive Backfield
Sophomore Will Freed returns at quarterback after throwing for
1594 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games a year ago, including
an ONU freshman-record 439 yards in a season-opening victory
against Utica (N.Y.)
Freshman transfer Christian Williams leads a strong list of
players that are expected to battle for the starting running back
position vacated by the graduation of All-Region honoree and twoyear starter Justin Magazine
We have good talent and depth returning in the backfield, Paul
said. We have highly talented returner at quarterback and we are
excited about our young running backs in our program.
Receivers / Tight End
Senior All-Conference receiver Reed Allen and senior AllConference tight end Logan Ray lead a talented list of targets for
Freed to throw to.
Allen leads all returners with 30 receptions for 599 yards and five
scores last year and Ray caught 13 passes for 220 yards and three
touchdowns in 2015.
Juniors Riley Bransteter and Malachi Nolletti and sophomore
Chad Rex are also back as lettermen on the outside.
Junior Teryl Mershon also returns at H-Back after an injury
plagued 2015 campaign.
This is a talented group that has big-play ability on the outside,
Paul said. We have guys with outstanding speed. We have good
athletes that can make plays and have experience. We also have
outstanding run blockers at both the receiver and tight end positions.
www.ONUSports.com
Defensive Line
Three starters and seven lettermen on the defensive front four
return, giving ONU a great deal of depth here.
Seniors Mike Cunningham and Scott Rapps return as starters
at tackle.
Cunningham is a two-year starter inside, while Rapps drew rave
reviews at tackle late in the season after starting the first eight games
at end last season.
Junior Jason Hundley is back after starting the last four games
at end last season.
Senior Nate Bracy, junior Mark Aguilar and sophomore Justin
Croswell also return as lettermen on the defensive front.
Our front four have a chance to be very good, Paul said. We
have three starters and a great deal of depth returning.
Linebacker
All three starters return at linebacker, making this potentially the
strongest position on the squad
First Team All-OAC and preseason All-America junior Zach
Schmerge and senior outside backers Cody Cox and Trent Stout all
return in 2015.
Schmerge led the team and was second in the OAC with 111
tackles in the middle last year.
Cox has started 31 games and has 132 career tackles and Stout
and has 105 tackles and 12 starts in his career.
Senior Nathan Kaszei, juniors Landry Hostetler and Zach
Meronoff and sophomore Kyle Rowe also return as lettermen.
We are really excited about this group of returners at
linebackers,
Paul said. Cox is a four-year starter, Schmerge had a break-out
year and Stout has been a steady performer for us.
Secondary
Graduation hit the ONU secondary hard, but seven lettermen
return in what may be the most competitive positions on the squad.
Senior All-OAC safety Dan Eller is a three-year starter and has
162 career tackles.
Junior Jason Lucas and sophomore Clay Miller are returning
lettermen that will lead the battle for the other starting safety spot.
Senior Nick Rezek and junior Christian Randolph have each
seen a great deal of playing time at corner and will battle returning
junior Cyler Caldwell and sophomore Cole Martin to fill those
starting slots.
Although we lose three starters, defensive back will be one
of our deepest positions entering camp, Paul said. We have guys
returning with quite a bit of experience and an All-Conference safety,
so we are excited about this group.
Special Teams
A pair of All-OAC honorees return on special teams for the Polar
Bears in 2015.
Senior Kyle Bergman is a four-year starter and is a two-time
All-OAC performer at punter, averaging 39.4 yards per attempt a year
ago.
Allen was named First Team All-OAC and First Team All-Central
Region as a punt and kickoff returner.
Sophomore Joe French had an outstanding season as kicker for
the junior varsity spot and leads the list of men that will battle for the
starting place kicking spot.
We have outstanding players at punter and returner, Paul said.
Bergman is an All-OAC punter and we have one of the best return
men in the country back. Our kicking job is wide open, but we feel
good about the young men that will compete in camp.
Schedule
The Polar Bears open the season with three consecutive road
games for the second time in three seasons and have a long road trip
to Empire-8 foe Utica (N.Y.) to kick off the campaign.
Road games at Heidelberg and Otterbein follow before Ohio
Northern opens its home schedule against Mount Union on Oct. 1 at
Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears will also host John Carroll under the lights on
Oct. 15, Muskingum on Oct. 22 as part of Homecoming Weekend and
Wilmington on Nov. 5 on Senior Day to complete the home schedule.

The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten
(1895). The Conference is older than the World Series
and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world
wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the
Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter
members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s.
Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another
have been members of the OAC. Currently the Conference consists of 10 members, including Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital University, Heidelberg University,
John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school, on July 1, 2000.
In the OACs first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference champion was
crowned Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was
added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a Conference sport in
1914. More sports were steadily
added to the OACs repertoire
throughout the years, culminating
in the addition of womens sports
in 1984. The Conference currently

Bergman is now a two-time Second Team All-OAC punter.
He had a 38.1-yard average for 48 punts this season with
14 punts downed inside the opponents 20-yard line.
Eller made his first appearance on the All-Conference
squad and is a two-year starter at safety.
He started all 12 games and was second on the team with
91 tackles.
Ray is a first-year starter at tight end. He caught 13 passes
for 220 yards and three touchdowns last season, including a
73-yard touchdown catch in ONUs season-opening win over
Utica (N.Y.)
Junior defensive linemen Mike Cunningham and Scott
Rapps were named Honorable Mention All-Conference.
Cunningham was a three-year starter at defensive tackle,
having started 26 games over the past three seasons.
Last year, he had 42 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 12 starts.
Rapps had 69 tackles and 4.5 sacks in his first season as
a starter at both end and tackle.
In all, 18 Polar Bears received either All-Conference or
Academic All-Conference honors.
Seballos, senior long snapper/quarterback Connor
Devine, senior kicker Matt Chaney, sophomore defensive
backs Cyler Caldwell and Landry Hostetler and sophomore
offensive linemen Carter Kemper and Sam Shook were
named Academic All-OAC.
Senior corner back Will Bodden played in the Dream Bowl
all-star game in Virginia Beach, Va.
Six different players were named the OAC Player of
the Week a total of seven times during the season, led by
Magazines back-to-back Offensive POW honors Nov. 7 and
14.
The Polar Bears posted their 19th upper division finish in
the OAC in the last 20 years.
Northern rallied from double-digit, second half deficits in its
first four games, facing one of the most difficult early-season
schedules in the country.
In the season opener against Utica (N.Y.) at Dial-Roberson
Stadium, freshman Will Freed threw for 439 yards and three
TDs as the Polar Bears rallied from a 19-7 deficit to post a 2922 win.
After a tough 28-27 loss to Baldwin Wallace the following
week under the lights at Dial-Roberson, the Polar Bears found
themselves down 20-10 in the third period to Heidelberg.
Again the Polar Bears stormed back, winning 34-20.
The first road trip of the year came next at No. 11-ranked
John Carroll and again ONU found itself in a third period hole,
trailing 24-7.
But Freed hit senior Justin McCray on a 35-yard TD pass
on a 4th-and-20 with 4:22 left in the game to give ONU a 30-27
victory.
Northern rattled off five consecutive wins to wrap up its
regular season with an 8-2 mark, scoring at least 42 points in
each of the games.
The Polar Bears continued their historical dominance in
the month of November, improving to 24-3 in the month in the
Dean Paul era.
Magazine tied a school record with a 6-touchdown effort in
ONUs 42-7 win over Otterbein on Senior Day to propel Ohio
Northern into the Playoffs for the fourth time in school history.
In the First Round at undefeated Franklin (Ind.), ONU
trailed 16-0 at halftime.
But again, the Polar Bears came roaring back, scoring on
four of its next five possessions, to win the game 27-22 and
improve to 4-0 all-time in the First Round of the Playoffs.
Northerns playoff run came to an end in the Second
Round with a 42-7 loss at No. 3-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Head coach Dean Paul and his staff believe in the importance of helping the student-athletes understand the significance of giving back and serving the community.
We believe it is very important for our staff to provide
opportunities for our athletes to be other-centered, Paul said.
Many young people develop a mind set where everything is
about them. Being other-centered helps develop the sometimes forgotten personel components in our players lives such
as religion and community service.
The football program participates in a variety of charitable
ventures including special Olympics and a free youth clinic. In
addition, pre-game chapel sessions and a midweek bible study
group are available for ONU football players of all denominations.

The rains held off during pregame
warmups, but began again in earnest
early in the first series and turned into
a steady downpour throughout the
remainder of the game.
There are many reasons that we
take advantage of the opportunity to
travel internationally every three years,
ONU head coach Dean Paul. As a
program, we relish the ability we have
to travel the world and promote the
game of football. We had a wonderful
day today with other people that have a
true passion for the game.
Northern drove inside the Roma
10-yard line on its first series, but was
not able to score.
On its second series, ONU scored
on consecutive plays as Freed completed a 5-yard TD pass to Lucas Huber and a 60-yard TD pass over the top
to Ethan Edwards to put ONU ahead
12-0.
On its third possession, the Polar
Bears scored on a 33-yard pass from
Matt Laubscher to Bert Marks and a
12-yard keeper by Freed to go up 24-0.
69
ONU then wrapped up the game
on its final series, marching 60 yards in
14 plays and scoring on a 7-yard run
by Caleb Saalfield.
Andrew DiMario nailed the only extra point of the game to end the contest
with a 31-0 score.
The Polar Bears out-gained the
Grizzlies 387-29 in total offense.
Will Poffenberger led the ONU
ground game with 72 yards rushing
on 15 carries and Allen Boss had five
tackles to lead the Northern defense.
Taking advantage of NCAA rules
that allow D-III colleges to travel every
three years, the Polar Bears experienced the cultural sights of Greece and
Italy in 2016, having previously visited
Ireland in 2013, Italy in 2010 and Germany in 2007.
All of the trips were part of the
Global Football annual spring tours
schedule. The group returned home on
Tuesday, May 17 after spending Monday touring ancient Rome.

on the clock.
Mike King sacked the UCD quarterback for a safety just 1:04 into the third
quarter to put the Polar Bears up 26-0.
Colbert scored from 11 yards out
on ONUs ensuing possession and the
lead was 33-0 with 7:52 left in the third.
Luke Rice drilled a 27-yard field
goal with 16 seconds left in the third
and Colbert wrapped up the scoring
with a 24-yard run with 5:38 left in the
game.
The Polar Bears spent eight days
in Ireland, seeing sights in Dublin,
Galway, the Aran Islands, Killarney, the
Ring of Kerry and at Blarney Castle,
home of the famous Blarney Stone.
The NCAA allows Division III
schools to travel internationally and
play an exhibition game once every
three seasons and Ohio Northern plans
on taking advantage of this wonderful
opportunity, ONU head coach Dean
Paul said.
www.ONUSports.com
The teams played 10 minute quarters in the contest.
Nick Newman made the first of his
nine extra points to put Northern up
7-0.
Michael Busch caught a 25-yard
TD pass from Simmons to cap a 3-play,
48-yard drive on ONUs next possession, making it 14-0 with only 2:43
gone in the contest.
Donley then scampered in from 35
yards out to cap a 3-play, 69-yard drive
on Northerns third possession and it
was 21-0 with 5:00 left in the opening
period.
On the next play from scrimmage,
J.J. Mihoci intercepted a pass and
returned it 29 yards for a score and a
28-0 ONU lead.
Josh Rouch scored from 7 yards
out on the fourth play of the second
period to make it a 35-0 game.
On Northerns next possession,
Simmons hit Kyle Baker on a 5-yard
71
www.ONUSports.com
He then caught a 25-yard pass
from Jeff Panktratz on ONUs first possession, then returned a punt 31 yards
for a score and a 28-0 lead late in the
first period.
Meadows rushed six times for 81
yards and TD runs of 35 and 4 yards.
His 35-yard scamper made it 22-0 with
4:20 left in the opening period.
Chane Porter returned an interception 23 yards for a score on the final
play of the first period.
Northern intercepted five passes
and returned four of them for scores in
the game.
Adam Bogner banged in from 17
yards out with 8:37 left in the half to put
the Polar Bears up 42-0.
Josh Lokai-Owens then blocked a
punt and recovered it in the end zone
for another score and a 49-0 lead with
5:46 left in the half.
Meadows scored from 4 yards out
with 37 seconds left in the half and
Brock England ended the half with a
29-yard interception return for a score
as time expired.
72
ONU did not run an offensive play
the rest of the game, but did score
third-quarter TDs on interception returns by Cullen Rasmussen (40 yards)
and Brandon Walker (27 yards).
The game was called after Bavarian quarterback Julian Englberg injured
his shoulder on the first play of the
fourth period.
In the game, ONU held Bavaria to
minus-54 yards of total offense, including minus-50 on 16 rushing attempts.
Northern gained 145 yards on just
11 plays, seven of which went for TDs
(two were called back due to penalties).
Porter had four tackles, two passes
broken up and his interception and Lokai-Owens had four tackles and a half
sack to go with his blocked punt to lead
the Polar Bear defense.
Northern will wrap up its week in
Germany with a sightseeing tour of
Heidelberg on Monday before flying
back to the United States on Tuesday.
