UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON
#23/NR WASHINGTON at #2/2 OREGON Dawgs Travel To Autzen For Annual Border Clash
THE GAME: The Washington football team (3-1 overall, 1-0 Pac-12) heads south to Eugene to face Northwest rival Oregon (5-0, 2-0) in the Huskies first conference road game of the season. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Autzen Stadium and the game will air live on ESPN. The Huskies, who beat then-No. 8 Stanford, 17-13, last Thursday, earned the No. 23 spot in this weeks Associated Press Top 25 (the UW was one spot out of the coaches poll) while Oregon retained its No. 2 ranking in both major polls. Oregon will represent the third top-10 UW opponent in a stretch of four games, as the Huskies also played then-No. 3 LSU back on Sept. 8. After the trip to Oregon, the Huskies return home to face No. 13 USC Oct. 13 at CenturyLink Field. Thats followed by a trip to the desert to face Arizona the following Saturday. QUICK SNAPS: Kasen Williams had 10 catches vs. Stanford last week, the first time a UW receiver had made double-digit catches in a game since Reggie Williams caught 13 vs. Arizona in 2003 ... Desmond Trufant had his sixth career interception on Stanfords final drive, essentially securing the win ... three of his six career INTs have come in similar fashion (last year vs. EWU and in 2008 vs. Arizona) ... TB Bishop Sankey rushed for 144 yards vs. Stanford, more than the Cardinal had allowed in their first three games total (124) ... the Cardinal entered the game leading the nation in rushing defense ... Washington had seven true freshmen see action in the season-opener Sept. 1 vs. San Diego State: P Korey Durkee, LS Ryan Masel, WR Jaydon Mickens, WR Kendyl Taylor, S Shaq Thompson, DE Pio Vatuvei and TB Erich Wilson II ... both Mickens and Thompson started the game ... Taylor started the game at LSU (as did Thompson) ... two more true freshmen made their debut vs. Portland State: WR Marvin Hall and OG Shane Brostek, who started vs. Stanford ... sophomore TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins set a new career-high with nine receptions vs. SDSU while quarterback Keith Price set a new career-high for completions, with 25 ... he remains, statistically, the most accurate passer in UW history ... a total of 16 players made their UW debut vs. San Diego State while five more players made their collegiate debut in the game at LSU ... against Portland State, an additional 10 players got on the field for the first time, meaning that 31 Huskies have played in their first UW games this season, so far. TELEVISION: The Washington-Oregon game will air live to a national audience on ESPN with Joe Tessitore, Matt Millen and Lewis Johnson providing the commentary. The game will also be available on other ESPN platforms, including (depending on a number of variables particular to each viewer) espn3.com and the Watch ESPN app. RADIO: The Washington IMG College Network, with its flagship station KJR 950-AM/102.9 FM, will carry the live broadcast of every football game on 18 Northwest radio stations. Longtime play-by-play man Bob Rondeau and color analyst Damon Huard are joined by sideline reporter Elise Woodward. WASHINGTON at OREGON AUTZEN STADIUM OCT. 6, 2012 7:30 P.M. PT (ESPN) THE HEAD COACH: In a frequently-told tale, Husky football coach Steve Sarkisian recalls his days as a young assistant traveling to face Washington at Husky Stadium. During the drive across Lake Washington, with the iconic home of the Dawgs towering ahead, Sarkisian marveled aloud at the city, the stadium and the atmosphere surrounding the UW program. A decade or so later, Sarkisian is in charge of the Washington football program he was admiring that day. And in just two years, he has re-established the kind of tough, exciting environment that was then, and is again now, so closely associated with the Husky football. The 2011 season, Sarkisians third as head coach, provided more highlights for his up-andcoming program. The Husky offense posted one of its most prolific seasons ever, scoring 434 points over the course of the season, the most by a UW squad since the 1991 national championship team and the second-most in school history. The Huskies scored nearly 12 more points per game than they did the previous year. They also had marked improvement in passing yards (65 more yards per game) and total offense (47 more yards per game), while the teams third-down percentage improved vastly over the previous season, from 32 to 46 percent. Sarkisian coached his team to a third straight win over Washington State in the annual Apple Cup to remain undefeated against the UWs in-state rival and to wrap up a 7-5 regular-season record and 5-4 mark in the Pac-12 North. The Huskies secured a berth in the Valero Alamo Bowl, the No. 2 game in the Pac-12 bowl lineup. In 2010, Sarkisians second season in Seattle, the Huskies made another clear step forward. The Dawgs went 7-6 overall and finished third in the Pac-10 Conference with a 5-4 record. Then, in the Holiday Bowl, Washington provided one of the bowl seasons top games, beating an 18th-ranked Nebraska squad, 19-7. The win over the Cornhuskers was the last of a series of exciting, gutsy victories in 2010. The season included three Husky wins decided on the very last play of the game (Oregon State, USC and Cal), plus another in which the winning score came inside the final minute (WSU). Sarkisian was introduced as the new head coach of the Washington football team on Dec. 8, 2008. From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didnt think it would take long to turn the program around and get it back to the high level of success that UW football has enjoyed throughout its history. In his first season, 2009, he seemed to prove that he was right. Washington, which posted a winless season for the first time in school history the year before Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvement of five victories over the previous year. No BCS-conference school in the nation could boast such improvement in terms of wins in 2009. And, Sarkisians Husky squad pulled off that feat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the season bowl-eligible. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth of experience as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. His string of success is nearly unprecedented as, during his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one of the nations most consistent and dominant offenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as the Trojans assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He had also previously served as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), quarterbacks coach (2002-03) and as an offensive assistant (2001) at USC, for a total of seven seasons there. During his seven seasons as a member of the Trojans staff, the team posted a combined 74-15 record. As offensive coordinator, his record was 22-3. Aside from his various roles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., in 2000, his first coaching job. Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiate and pro levels. After his standout career at Brigham Young University, he was played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for three seasons (1997-99). He had a record-setting two-year (1995-96) career at BYU, playing under legendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-of-824 passes (66.6 percent) for 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His 162.0 career passing efficiency rating ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation in passing efficiency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conference champion Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, and earned second-team All-America honors. Sarkisian transferred to BYU from El Camino Junior College, where he played two seasons (1993-94). He was a first-team Junior College AllAmerica selection as a sophomore and earned all-conference honors in 1993 as a Page 2

WASHINGTON at OREGON AUTZEN STADIUM OCT. 6, 2012 7:30 P.M. PT (ESPN) COACHING STAFF: Washingtons assistant coaching staff returns entirely includes five new members in 2012, meaning half of the 10 full-time coaches are in their first season at the UW. Nearly all of the nine fulltime assistant coaches have some sort of tie to the Northwest and many played for then-Pac-10 football programs. The offensive side of the ball is led by newcomer Eric Kiesau, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who came to the UW from California. A former QB at Portland State, Kiesau spent the last decade at either Cal or Colorado. He joins three offensive coaches who have been at the UW since Steve Sarkisian was hired. Associate head coach - offense and running backs coach Joel Thomas, in his fourth year at UW, grew up in Port Angeles, Wash., and is a member of the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame. He is still the Vandals all-time leader in carries, rushing yards and rushing TDs. Fellow Idaho grad Dan Cozzetto is in his fourth season as the UWs run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Cozzetto grew up in Spokane, Wash., and was also the Washington line coach in 2003. He came to the UW from Arizona State. UW pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach Jimmie Daugherty played QB at Missouri and spent most of his coaching career prior to the UW at the University of San Diego. Assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator Johnny Nansen is a fourth-year coach at the UW. He grew up in Long Beach, Calif., but played football at Washington State and spent the previous five years at Idaho before moving over to the UW. The four defensive coaches are all new to the UW this year. Coordinator Justin Wilcox grew up in Junction City, Ore., and spent four years as a defensive back at Oregon. He came to the UW from Tennessee and, prior to that, coached at Boise State, among others. His former college roommate, Peter Sirmon, oversees the UW linebackers. A four-year starter at Oregon and a native of Walla Walla, Wash., Sirmon played in the NFL for seven years before moving on to coaching. After stints at Central Washington and Oregon, he worked with Wilcox at Tennessee before coming to Seattle. The new defensive backs coach is Keith Heyward, a four-year letterman at Oregon State. An L.A.-area native, Heyward has coached at OSU six of the last seven seasons. Defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator Tosh Lupoi had spent his entire playing and coaching career at California before moving to the UW this past off-season. A former Cal defensive lineman, hed coached the line at his alma mater the last four years after two seasons as a GA. Washington also has two returning grad assistants and two new ones. Washingtons two returners are Jordan Paopao and Donte Williams. Paopao, who works with the tight ends, was a four-year starting center at the University of San Diego while Williams, who prepped at Culver City High in the Los Angeles area, was a defensive back at Syracuse. The newcomers are Eric Guttorp, a Seattle native who wrapped up his career as a UW kicker last season, and Andrew Rolin, who played and coached at USD alongside Paopao and Dougherty before heading north to Seattle this off-season. VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE: While the Huskies full-time coaching staff doesnt include any UW graduates, nearly all of them have some tie to the state or to the Northwest and a surprising number have actually played for their alma mater against the Dawgs. Head man Steve Sarkisians only loss in a 14-1 season as a senior at BYU in 1996 came to the UW at Husky Stadium. New defensive coaches Justin Wilcox and Peter Sirmon both faced the Huskies during their playing careers at Oregon from 1996 to 1999. Former Washington State linebacker Johnny Nansen, now the Huskies recruiting coordinator and special teams coach, was on the opposite sideline for several Apple Cups in the early-to-mid 1990s and new defensive backs coach Keith Heyward played in a few barnburners vs. the UW for Oregon State from 1997 to 2000. More recently, defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi squared off with the Huskies during his time as a d-lineman at California at the start of the last decade. And while neither offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto nor running backs coach Joel Thomas ever faced Washington during their careers at Idaho, both grew up in the Evergreen State. Finally, new offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau has also never played against Washington, but did play his college football just across the border at Portland State. HUSKIES vs. DUCKS HISTORY: Washington leads the all-time series against the Ducks with 58 wins, 41 losses and five ties. While the series of games played in Eugene has the Ducks enjoying a 15-12 edge all-time (Oregon's home games vs. the UW were played in Portland for many years), the Huskies are 31-20-4 against their cross-border rivals in games played in Seattle. Washington has been a frequent visitor to Eugene in recent years. The 2009 game in Seattle was just the third in the decade while they've met at Autzen in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010. The Ducks have had the edge of late, winning 13 of the last 17 against the Dawgs. The Huskies, however, have won 15 of the last 30 and 21 of the last 37. Last year, in the final game at the old Husky Stadium, the Ducks beat the UW, 34-17. In 2010 in Eugene, UW QB Keith Price made his first college start in a 53-16 Husky loss. Oregon led 18-16 in the third quarter before pulling away. Three years at Husky Stadium, Oregon won, 43-19. Four seasons ago in Eugene in the season-opener for both teams, Jeremiah Masoli came off the bench and led the Ducks to a 44-10 win. In 2007 in Seattle, the Huskies and Ducks were tied at 31-31 after three quarters before Oregon pulled away in the final period for a 55-34 win. The Huskies' last win over Oregon was in 2003, when Shelton Sampson and Kenny James both rushed for over 100 yards in a 42-10 Husky victory. Washington and Oregon first met on the football field in 1900, a 43-0 Oregon win in Eugene. The Huskies got their first win in the series in the next meeting, a 6-5 victory in 1903. From 1974 to 1993, Washington won 17 of 20 meetings. The series also features one of the biggest year-to-year turnarounds in college football history as the Ducks beat the Huskies, 58-0, in 1973 and then lost at the UW, 66-0, the following year. WASHINGTON-OREGON TIES: Washingtons coaching staff includes two coaches who were four-year lettermen at Oregon. Both UW defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox and linebackers coach Peter Sirmon lettered from 1996 to 1999. Both joined the UW staff this season. Several current longtime members of the UO coaching staff were working at Oregon at the time that Wilcox and Sirmon played there. Sirmon was also a grad assistant with the Ducks in 2009. Additionally, UW offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau worked on the same Colorado staff as Ducks OC Mark Helfrich in the late 2000s. Washingtons current roster includes just one player from the state of Oregon: sophomore OL James Atoe, from The Dalles. The Ducks roster lists only two Washingtonians: OL Nick Cody (Brush Prairie/Hockinson) and DL Nick Morrison (Everett/Cascade). A few Huskies and Ducks went to the same high school: Husky Gregory Ducre and Duck DeAnthony Thomas (Crenshaw); Husky Talia Crichton and Duck Rahim Cassell (Lakewood); Husky Kendyl Taylor and Ducks Tyler Johnstone and Reggie Daniels (Hamilton). DAWGS AND THE NORTHWEST: Washingtons most-played rivalries are against the other three other northwest Pac-12 schools. The Huskies have faced Washington State 104 times, Oregon in 103 games and Oregon State on 96 occasions. Washington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies lead the Ducks 58-41-5, Washington State 67-31-6 and Oregon State 58-34-4. Combined, Washington has a 183-106-15 (.627) record against its northwest rivals. Washington has played all three of the Northwest teams in a season on 83 prior occasions. Over those 83 seasons in which Oregon, OSU and WSU were all on the UW schedule, the Dawgs have swept all three 28 times. In the meantime, the Huskies have lost to all three in the same season on only seven occasions.

TEAM NOTES
THE PAC-12: Last season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. This year (and last), the Huskies will not face UCLA or Arizona State. Prior to last year, the last time that Washington didnt face UCLA in a season was in 1992 (when the Pac-10 schedule was eight games). The UW didnt face Arizona State in 2003 or 2004. CAPTAINS: At the Huskies annual Raise the Woof! preseason celebration, the captains for the 2012 season were unveiled. This season, thanks to a tie in the player voting, five captains were selected. On offense, junior quarterback Keith Price (Compton, Calif.) and senior center Drew Schaefer (Sammamish, Wash.) were honored. On defense, three players were selected: junior safety Sean Parker (Los Angeles), sophomore linebacker John Timu (Long Beach, Calif.) and senior cornerback Desmond Trufant (Tacoma). All five players are serving as UW captain for the first time as all four of the Huskies captains in 2011 have departed. DECADE AFTER DECADE: Washington has won a conference title and a trip to the Rose Bowl in each of the last nine decades, dating back to the 1920s when Washington won the berth in 1923 and 1925. In the 1930s, the Dawgs won the 36 title. In the 40s, Washington earned the trip in 1943 and then barely slipped in under the wire in the 1950s, winning the 1959 crown. The Huskies won two Rose Bowl berths in the 1960s -- 1960 and 1963 -- and one in the 1970s (1977). Titles in 1980 and 1982 did it for that decade and three straight trips to Pasadena to begin the 1990s covered that 10-year span. In the 2000s, UW was the first team to earn Rose Bowl berths in nine straight decades. USC joined the Dawgs in that distinction in 2004 after their New Years Day appearance in Pasadena. THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 181-563 (.760) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. Washington won both such games this season as Bishop Sankey hit the century mark in wins over Portland State and Stanford. HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 77 times. The Huskies record stands at 65-12-1 (.851) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 40-9-1 (.810) when rushing for 200 yards. PLAYING AT CENTURYLINK FIELD: Washington will play the entire 2012 home season at CenturyLink Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Sounders FC soccer. CenturyLink Field is located in the SoDo District of Seattle, just south of downtown (hence, SoDo). The stadium was opened in 2002 on the site of the old Kingdome. Washington has played two games there, prior to this season. In 2005, the UW opened the season with a road game vs. Air Force (the game was Air Forces home game, but moved to the neutral site), falling to the Falcons, 20-17. Last year, in a bid to give the Husky Stadium renovation project a head start, the Huskies played the annual Apple Cup game at CenturyLink Field, beating Washington State, 38-21, in front of 64,559 fans. The stadium, operated by First & Goal, Inc., has a FieldTurf playing surface and a football capacity of 67,000. HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium is currently undergoing a massive renovation which began last November following the Oregon game. The Seattle icon was first opened in 1920. Upper decks were added in the 1950s (south) and 1980s (north). Renovations will completely remake the lower bowl and the south deck. The stadium track will be removed and an operations center for the football team will be built into the west end. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com. HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that will be completed in time for the 2013 season. The 2011 season marked the 92nd season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. Thanks to several major renovations, Husky Stadiums seating capacity increased to 72,500. UWs all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 357-169-21 (.673). Washington will re-open the stadium vs. Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. FAMILY TIES: As is the case with most seasons of Husky football, there are a number of players on the Washington football team related to either current or former Huskies. LB Jamaal Kearse is the younger brother of former WR Jermaine Kearse, who finished his career last season. RS-freshman safety Evan Zegers father, John, played safety at the UW, lettering in 1980 and 1981, while sophomore WR Kasen Williams dad, Aaron was a four-year letterman (1979-82) wide receiver for the Huskies. Freshman OL Shane Brostek is the son of Husky All-America center Bern Brostek (1986-89). Senior DL Talia Crichton, is a cousin of former DE Daniel TeoNesheim. Junior quarterback Keith Price is a cousin of former UW tailback Jelani Harrison. A little further afield, sophomore TE Michael Hartvigson is a cousin to former UW baseball pitchers Chad and Grant Hartvigson. Incidentally, at least three Huskies have close family ties to Washington State. LB Nate Fellner is the grandson of former WSU head coach Jim Sweeney. Cooper Pelluers father, Scott, played at WSU, as did Husky cornerback Desmond Trufants brother Marcus. Pelluers uncle Steve, however, was a UW QB and his father Scott was an assistant coach at UW. RANDOM NOTES: Washingtons roster includes player from eight different states (based on where the player completed high school): Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington ... Washington has a long tradition of great Polynesian players; this years roster includes 19 players of Samoan, Tongan or Hawaiian descent: James Atoe, Jonathan Amosa, Jesse Callier, Talia Crichton, Jarett Finau, Cory Fuavai, Princeton Fuimaono, Micah Hatchie, Hauoli Jamora, Lawrence Lagafuaina, Sione Potoae, Danny Shelton, John Timu, Semisi Tokolahi, Siosifa Tufunga, Taniela Tupou, Thomas Tutogi, Pio Vatuvei and Psalm Wooching.
