The Community Futures Wild Rose Farm Selection Committee publicized the nine producers, processors, and ag-tourism operators including four
operations in Wheatland County to participate in
the Open Farm Days Coaching Program in the Wild
Rose region - a $50,000 investment by Alberta Culture and Tourism.
Poplar Bluff Organics, Country Lane Farms, Will
Farms, and Rocking R Guest Ranch were among
nine successful applicants in the region that spans
from Chestermere to Hussar and from Trochu to
Gleichen.
For the next several months, the recipients will
collect on one-on-one coaching from an Alberta management consulting practice, Clearthink
Group, with a focus of preparing farm operators
to develop their product and develop agricultural
tours before the two-day Open Farm Days event in
August.
This coaching program will help them with their
day on Open Farm Days but also many of these
groups do other events or tours, so whatever they
learn they can now implement into their other agri-tourism offerings, said Wendy Gerbrandt, community economic development (CED) coordinator
for Community Futures Wildrose, who added that
participation in the southern region now surpassed
those of central and northern Alberta.
We went from having the smallest amount of
registrants to now having the most. Because of
what we did to push the program, we have more
farms overall throughout all of Alberta which is
pretty neat.
Three qualified coaches, with extensive experience working with agri-business, agriculture, and
tourism, met with all nine successful applicants last
week and toured the operations to provide feedback and advice on improving aspects of the business before Albertans tour the property.
The coaching program will address increasing
the quality of quantity of ag-tourism operators,
increasing on-farm sales during Open Farm Days
weekend, provide experiential tourism opportunities, and promote local foods and create awareness
of where food originated.
While Rocking R Guest Ranch hosted a culinary
event last year, and Poplar Bluff Organics, as well
as Country Lane Farms, participated in Open Farm
Days previously, new-kid-on-the-block to the event,
Will Farms, applied for the opportunity to receive
coaching in order to be prepared on how to serve
the public most effectively in two months time.

Contestants gear up to conquer Miss Strathmore Stampede title

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Three eager and spirited young women are attending fundraisers and meeting various communities in preparation
for competing in five different categories during the Strathmore Stampede,
in hopes of grasping the title of Miss
Strathmore Stampede.
After a 15-year hiatus with a queen
being appointed in 2012 until 2015 Strathmore created the Stampede Royalty Program Committee and held a
contest for the position last year. Continuing on with the tradition, Strathmore local Shelby Stout, Cayley Peltzer,
and Lindsay Newman hope to represent
Strathmore in the upcoming year.
We attend fundraisers and events to
put ourselves out there and talk to the
community, said Stout, who took part
in 4H for nearly a decade.
Strathmore is my home town. Ive
grown up here my whole life, Ive gone
to school here, I know tons of people
here through 4H, and I think itd be really special if they had someone that
they knew. The other girls would be
great too; they are so nice. We all have
fairly similar personalities its been a
lot of fun and Im really excited to get
to know them a lot better.
All three contestants travelled to Didsbury on June 12 to attend a fundraiser,
and will be expected to participate in
five categories adjudicated by three
judges over several days during Strathmore Stampede weekend. The contestants will have a chance to impress the
judges with their horsemanship, impromptu speeches, personal interviews,
written exams, and the fashion show.
While all three participants are confident in their horsemanship, they are
brushing up on their knowledge of ro-

deo history and information on Strathmore and the area. Having ran for the
title of queen herself at a young age as
well as organizing a queen contest for
five years in Camrose previously, chair
of the Stampede Royalty Program Committee Judi Wilson, is excited about the
contest this year and continuing the tradition.
There is nothing like a beautiful girl
on a horse that draws peoples attention
and when she goes to all these different venues, whether its the Ducks fundraiser or whether it was our Cowgirl
Cattle Company, where shes representing Strathmore, said Wilson.
It brings Strathmore itself into the
limelight, but even more so it brings rodeo, our Strathmore Stampede, into the
light.
The committee received eight applications in total of hopeful contestants
vying for the opportunity to take the
crown, which will be relinquished by
the current queen during the rodeo performance. In contrast to last year, the
committee decided to remove the public
speaking component and introduce an
impromptu speech aspect where questions will be drawn out of a hat at the
fashion show. Newman who held the
Amateur Rodeo of Central Alberta title
for Rimbey Rodeo Princess in 2015, said
she looks forward to possibly representing a pro pageant featuring chuckwagons, visiting with different community members, and educating the public
on rodeos. With just over a month to
go until the event, Peltzer. who is completing her agriculture business diploma and pursuing an animal health tag
education, is preparing herself for the
opportunity to represent the rodeo she
attended each year since a young age.
Im really excited to possibly represent the Town of Strathmore and the

Strathmore Stampede, so Im looking

forward to the opportunities that it has,
she said. Weve just kind of been here
and there, but its getting down to the
nitty gritty now and its time to pull up
our socks and see who has it.

This can occur naturally or sometimes it can be
due to a drug you are taking. Taste may return

Having live plants in your house will help
improve the quality of the air you breath indoors.
They increase the amount of oxygen in the home
as well as manage carbon dioxide levels and help
to reduce the levels of organic chemicals in the
air. Just one or two plants will do the job.
There is much research going on about the effects

Canadian Tire fundraising success

gives back to community
something that supported the youth and
we know that schools are facing cutbacks on their funding, so we thought
the best way to reach the youth in Strathmore is to give the schools the funds to
come and buy whatever they want for
their school.
Canadian Tire dispersed the vouchers
to the schools last week, allowing for the
purchase of gym and recreational program equipment.
During the first year of participating
in the campaign in 2011, the local store
helped 21 kids in the local area, a number which has doubled each year since.
By donating the money to schools, the
institutions will be able to upgrade their
schools with new equipment and benefit
their students moving forward.
According to Orford the feedback from
schools has been positive and appreciative.
Their gratitude has been overwhelming, she said. Theyve been so grateful
for this that it made us feel like we made
the right choice.
Canadian Tire will be hosting this
years dunk-tank fundraiser on June 25.

Farms receive training

Continued from Page 1

I thought perhaps they might have
some helpful suggestions because I really didnt quite know how the program
runs and what kinds of things we should
be doing for the public when they come,
said Elaine Bellamy, owner of the corporate family farm, Will Farms Ltd.
I hope to help the public learn a little
bit more about how a large grain farm
actually operates in Alberta and how important the farming economy is. I hope
to represent farms in Alberta that grow
canola and grains. Its a lot of work to
take part in the Open Farm Days, but
we as farmers are constantly encouraged
to tell our story. Tell the public all the
things you do for the environment and
to be sustainable. I guess thats why I
thought Ill be involved.
A total of 16 organizations are registered to take part in Open Farm Days
in the southern Alberta region, including
three culinary events. Furthermore, over
75 host farms and seven culinary events
are involved across the province.

Strathmore hosted the event for the

first time last August, with the aim to
educate its residents on the operations
of their establishments and showcase
local food components. Because of its
success, having attracted over 300 residents to each farm that year five farms
and one farm-to-table culinary event
the government awarded the region the
funds to provide the coaching program
to nine farms in the region.
Coaches have met with all the selected
farms, toured the properties, completed
a comprehensive initial visit, and provided a report with recommendations. Although they will return during the event,
the coaches will continue to provide advice via phone and video conferencing
in the meantime.
Open Farm Days, a collaborative
province-wide two-day event, giving
residents the opportunity to experience
farms and become educated on where
their food comes from, will take place on
Aug. 20-21. A full list of participants in
all three regions can be viewed at www.

Wheatland County council discussed the merits
of retaining a mediation service for a few educational sessions that would be provided to council.
Municipal leaders regularly face complex and
controversial issues. There are times when speaking to an impartial party can bring an alternative
perspective for approaching the situation, said
Kim Heyman, Alberta Association of Municipal
Districts and Counties (AAMDC) director of advocacy and communications.
For better communication Heyman recommends
the Peer Network program to municipal leaders.
The Peer Network program is a resource of
eight mentors that have volunteered to serve as
advisors to their peers throughout Alberta, said
Heyman. Each peer mentor brings years of municipal experience in either an administrative or
elected role and has been trained in dispute resolution techniques.
Wheatland County councillors voted to have
the Peer Network retained to review roles and responsibilities for municipal officials with them and
deemed the process would be beneficial to both
new and re-elected officials alike. Conflict resolution, within and without the council arena, was
also a topic of interest, with a hope that it could
improve interpersonal communications for Wheatland council members.
We all could use a refresher, said Reeve Glenn
Koester.
DALUM FIRE LOAN APPROVED
Dalum Fire Protection Agency Association will be
smiling after the June 7 Wheatland County council
meeting, as approval on Bylaw 2016-14 will allow
them to borrow $108,359.72 from the county, to
pay on outstanding debts accrued on the building
of the new fire hall. Monthly payments with interest will be made over a period of fifteen years.
They do wonderful work out there and they
have built a wonderful facility. This loan will allow
them to continue to do their work, said Jim Laslo,
general manager of Wheatland County Agriculture,
Community & Protective Services
The new hall has provided much-needed equipment storage, maintenance and training space.
MARIGOLD RATES APPROVED
Michelle Toombs, CEO for Marigold Library system approached Wheatland Council on June 7 for
a raise in library per capita levy rates in 2017/18.
She proposed $9.81 for 2017, $10.26 for 2018,
based on 2015 population of 8,285. Currently rates
run $8.99. She said the increase is about two per
cent.
The library has seen an increase of 2,100 cardholders in the last year for the Wheatland area.
Statistics show that our Alberta libraries are
very active, whereas other provinces have shown
declines, said Toombs.
She said library operation costs continue to rise.
Digital services, deliveries to additional locations
and vehicle costs are some areas that are costing
more to run. With all the services and programs
offered to residents in the county, Toombs said
valuations and feedback supports users are getting
good value for municipal investment in the library
system.
Councillor Berniece Bland complimented
Toombs on the professionalism of the staff and
their job efficiency. Toombs indicated they were
very thankful to be in a partnership with Wheatland County.

SPEED ZONE NO GO
Wheatland council speculated on whether
speed zone reductions were needed on the Range
Road 222 and Hwy 561 intersection adjacent to
the Wheatland Crossing School.
I have had people phoning about the speed
zoning on Hwy 561, said Councillor Alice Booth.
Setting secondary highway speed limits falls to
the province, but municipalities can make a request to have alterations considered.
Trevor Richelhoff, from Alberta Transportation,
said there is a rating system used to decide on a
school zone and its speed designation. A criterion
with a scoring system out of 100 points is used.
Scores over 80 are named school zones, with corresponding speed reductions. The Wheatland
Crossing School intersection had a score of 57, so
it is not required to have a 30 km speed designation. The school is required to have the grounds
fenced from highway access.
Council further discussed whether stop signs
might be a prudent or safe measure. Councillor
Brenda Knight and Councillor Ben Armstrong
pointed out that having a school next to a secondary highway is not a new situation, as there
are other examples of schools on secondary highways. They expressed that it is up to drivers to be
vigilant around a school and slow down during
school hours. Knight said stop signs would just increase danger at the intersection, by stacking traffic onto a busy road. No measures were proposed
at this time.
RECREATION FIELD UPDATE
Councillor Brenda Knight filled Wheatland
County council in on the plans for the recreational
facility that will be situated next to the new K-9
school that will be built off George Freeman Trail,
in the new community of Edgeview in Strathmore.
She said that she was able to tour similar facilities in Calgary, Olds and Airdrie, and the proposed plans for the Edgeview site are looking
quite good. Sketches are posted on the Wheatland
County website under the June 7 minutes and
agenda. There are soccer pitches, a walking track
and options for views of the community field
house. There are no architectural drawings of the
building exterior as yet, but the Town of Strathmore has indicated it must be pleasing and fit in
with the surrounding buildings. There were some
concerns about the field house as its height is considerably taller than other structures in the area.
There are two proposals for the type of building, a
Sprung beam structure or conventional construction. The choice will be determined depending on
costs involved.
DUST CONTROL REVIEW
A review on how roads are considered for dust
control was called for by Councillor Brenda Knight
on June 7. She had many concerned ratepayers
calling about the boundary roads close to the
Lakes of Muirfield community and Lyalta hamlet.
I have asked year after year on this issue. I have
some very angry owners concerned about this,
said Knight.
Currently there are guidelines for staff on where
dust control is done and none include county
hamlets or villages. Knight said the adjacent roads
being covered only have a few residents, whereas
there are over 100 residents and a commercial golf
enterprise affected by the dust kicked up on the
boundary roads. Council agreed that the criteria
could be reviewed and the issue revisited at a later
date.

I will always stand up for Alberta

DEREK FILDEBRANDT
MLA Strathmore-Brooks

When I decided to run to become your MLA for
Strathmore-Brooks in January of 2015, the Wildrose Party had been shattered by a mass floorcrossing that caused most Albertans to write the
party off for dead.
I ran for the Wildrose and to become your MLA
because I have deeply held convictions that could
not be bought off by the political opportunism of
the Jim Prentice-Danielle Smith backroom deal. I
believe in the greatness of Alberta, the rightness
of conservatism, and the mission of the Wildrose
Party. For me, I would not compromise them for
anything.
Anyone who met me during the campaign
knew exactly what they were voting for; Im a
conservative, Im often politically incorrect, I may
not always be diplomatic, but I always say what I
mean, and mean what I say. Im not good at playing political games, and so I dont bother trying.
I just do what I was elected to do: fight for the
people of Strathmore-Brooks and stand up for
Alberta.
It would not be in keeping with who I am to
not address my three-day suspension from the
Wildrose Caucus. It is a complicated matter that
has not been done proper justice by most of the
mainstream media that operate in five-second
sound bites. Ill be the first to admit that the volume of correspondence received from Albertans
via social media overwhelmed me and led to an
inadvertent error. To address this, Ive hired extra
help (at no additional cost to the taxpayer) to
prevent these kinds of distractions in the future.
I want to sincerely thank the Strathmore-Brooks
Wildrose Constituency Association, constituents,
and Wildrose members for all their support.
These events were a distraction from our real
job, but I was pleased to be fully reinstated to
the Wildrose Caucus three days later. Its time to
move forward as a united party.

On June 2, I was back in the Legislature doing

what I was elected to do; fighting Premier Rachel Notleys $6 billion Carbon Tax. This Carbon
Tax will kick Albertas largest job and wealth creator when its down and cost families well over
$1,000 a year. The NDP will rebate only a portion
of the Carbon Tax back to Albertans in hopes of
buying them off at election time, but it will still
hit families and our economy hard.
The Wildrose Official Opposition fought the
NDP Carbon Tax with everything that we had
in the Legislature. We put forward over a dozen
amendments to the bill in hopes of making it
less harmful than it would otherwise be. The
NDP rejected all of these amendments. We debated the bill until 4 a.m. in the morning trying to
knock some sense into the NDP MLAs who were
trying not to fall asleep in their chairs.
But in the end, the NDP has a majority government and forced their MLAs to follow their
partys whip, regardless of the arguments made
by the Wildrose Opposition. Its an unfortunate
problem in our democracy.
Weve had enough politicians who will do or
say anything just to get elected in Alberta, and its
led us straight to the NDP.
Any constituent who knows me, knows that I
speak plainly. Im not the type to sugar-coat what
I have to say on the issues that matter most to
Albertans. Im not willing to promise anything
just to get elected. Unlike many politicians, Im
willing to lose a vote or two if it means that I get
elected on a clear mandate to represent the views
of my constituents and my own convictions.
I will learn as I grow in the position that you
have honoured me with as your MLA, but I always stand by the principles that you elected me
to stand up for.

and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. Contact him at strathmore.brooks@assembly.

The Big 36 Horse Hitch comes to Gleichen!

GWEN BOLINGER
Big 36 Horse Hitch Committee

Excitement is building as Gleichen awaits the arrival of
the Big 36 Horse Hitch!
On July 1, Neil Dimmock and Bill Engman, with their
team of magnificent Black Percheron horses will be in Gleichen to answer any questions about their upcoming historic
journey and tribute to Slim Moorehouse.
The two men have always been interested in history.
Grain wagons were a staple on western farms and ranches
in the 1920s. Trucks were unreliable and unable to haul as
big loads as the wagons. Slim Moorehouse, who worked on
the Bar O.N. Ranch in the Buffalo Hills near Arrowwood,
was a teamster driving long strings of horses or mules with
loaded wagons to grain markets.
The Gleichen Call History Book, with a continuation in
Memories Recalled Cluny and Gleichen History Book 2014,
have articles about Slim Moorehouse, his outriders and the
Worlds Longest Team. The world record outfit was made
up of 36 Black Percheron horses hauling 10 wagons loaded
with a total of 1,477 bushels of grain. This would be equivalent to almost a Super B truck load of grain today.
In 1925, Slim Moorehouse drove his team of 36 Black Percheron horses with 10 wagons from Gleichen to the Calgary
Stampede Parade to celebrate the 50th year of Calgarys
birth. Nine wagons were filled with 1377 bushels of top
grade wheat. The tenth wagon was loaded with 100 bushels of four ounce sacks of wheat labeled, Marquis wheat
grown at Gleichen, Alta, and hauled by the longest team
in the world. Small sacks were thrown into the crowd as
souvenirs.
After five years of planning, Neil Dimmock and Bill Engman from Mundare, Alta. will re-enact this journey 91 years
later.
Gleichen plans to celebrate this historic event on July 1.
Canada Day Festivities will kick off at 7 a.m. with a pancake

Feasibility study for Marigold

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Marigold Library system
is running out of space and
staff has needed to get creative to find work related
solutions within a building
badly in need of repair. They
have reorganized work space,
revamped
shipping/receiving areas, replaced the roof
and fixed infrastructure in attempts to do business as usual. Future delivery volumes
and any new IT equipment
and infrastructure might have
to be limited if change is not
forthcoming. The basement
and roof structure also still
need work.
To that end, the board is
looking for avenues that will
raise money for a new building.
It is very difficult for us
to secure money for various
projects, Michelle Toombs,
Marigold Library Systems
CEO.
Under the provincial Library Act, library systems are
not allowed to borrow money.
There has been a request put
forward by the Alberta Urban
Municipality Association to
have the provincial government include an option for
library systems to finance
big projects like new library
buildings.
To get a better picture of
building costs, the Marigold
Library System is developing
a feasibility study. It is expected to be completed sometime

in November 2016. There will

be comparisons for maintenance and expansion of the
existing building, adding additional off-site facilities, or
building a new building at a
new site.
Toombs expects a new
building would cost about
four to six million dollars;
however, the study will give a
more accurate picture of the
funding needed and available
options. The library system
has started saving towards a
new building, but significant
fundraising would be needed
to make the new building a
reality.
She said that they are hoping for a facility of about
20,000 square feet, with bays
for the library delivery van
fleet and adequate space for
technical equipment, which
currently is severely cramped.
The current building was built
in the 1950s and has many infrastructure and maintenance
issues. There has been some
encouragement by the province to have library systems
form partnerships with other
organizations and municipalities, and Toombs said the
board doesnt object to hearing about partnership ideas.
Marigold Library System
serves 290,263 residents in
Southern Alberta and has
37 member public libraries,
along with 12 book deposits. Six vans are used to visit
and deliver materials to each
of the member libraries and
book deposits once a week.

SHS presents final 2015-2016 play

SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Junior Contributor

From June 5-8, Strathmore High
Schools (SHS) Drama 25 and 35 classes
featured a simple, yet captivating play
written by Thornton Wilder.
Our Town, a Pulitzer Prize winner,
features three appropriately titled acts:
Life, Marriage, and Death. Taking place
in 1901 in the small community of Grovers Corners, USA, the play focuses on
two families and their paths through
life, a seemingly simple idea, but was
portrayed through very relatable events.
The production itself was written as a
play which featured a charismatic narrator who took the audience on a trip
through daily rhythms like door-to-door
milk delivery, and milestones like the
circus that wedding preparations feel
like.
Unique to this particular production
by SHS, staff member Paula Furfaro
guest directed. Bringing talent and passion to the set, producer and teacher
Paula Richardson watched as she motivated students to think differently when
merging into the intricate world of each
of their characters.
This task was made more difficult,
though, by the unique and rare technique of limited special effects and
simple sets, props, and costumes which
has challenged the students basic theatrical skills and pushed them to mature
as actors and actresses. The majority of
sound effects were created by the stu-

dents themselves. As a result of this the actors and actresses
were successful in bringing these very relatable characters to
the stage; the events of their daily lives were chronicled with
a sense of realism which was a refreshing change from the
shock-factor theatrics often seen.
The production ended with the moral of living a thoughtful
life, a life lived in every moment, not just in the anticipation
of the coming days.
I think its made [the students] look at the values of family,
look at the values of heritage so often you go through life
not paying attention to the moment. Youre always looking
for whats going to happen tomorrow, whats going to happen next year this play brings it right down and thats
kind of the point of the playwright is that we never take the
time to look at the moment that were in, said Richardson.
Not only was this the final play of the year, it marked both
the first major play for some students and a farewell to high
school drama for others, a fitting end as many of these students will soon embark into the next act of their lives.

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

With June 6-12 dedicated to Seniors
Week, Wheatland County councillors
turned their attention to seniors housing at the June 7 council meeting.
Reeve Glenn Koester said he has
been in discussions with the Alberta
government about funding for seniors
accommodations in the Wheatland
area. He said he has been asked to
meet with representatives of the seniors and housing ministries about
this areas housing needs.
The government seems sincere
about getting planning done, said
Koester.
He said developing a concept plan,
complete with a needs assessment, for
housing in the region would go a long
way with government officials. Koester
said he felt the tone was very good for
future building prospects in Wheatland County.
With Sagewood Age Care and Wheatland Lodge full, along with long waiting lists for both, the housing shortage
is a concern for the community. It was

suggested the various municipalities in

Wheatland County meet and develop a
plan. He said the government would
like to see multiuse plans, providing
all levels of care, and it encourages
municipalities to work together. When
asked if initiatives for smaller complexes might be considered for small
rural towns and villages, Koester said
the government seemed to lean toward facilities in larger urban centres.
The Alberta government is gathering public input into what Albertans
would like to see for housing initiatives and a survey can be completed.
It is located online at (http://www.
seniors-housing.alberta.ca/housing/
affordable_housing_strategy_engagement.htm).
The government is also close to
passing an initiative that will give financial support in keeping senior residents in their own homes longer. Bill 5
has passed third reading and went for
Royal assent on May 27, 2016.
If passed, the seniors Home Adaptation and Repair program will be effective July 1, 2016.
The program will help seniors re-

main secure and independent in their

own homes. In addition to the loan
program, we are restoring two million
dollars in grants for seniors who are
most in need, said Seniors Minister
Lori Sigurdson. Seniors have told us
that being able to stay in their homes
and communities, as long as they
choose or as long as they are able, is
vital to their independence and quality
of life.
Repairs and upgrades to seniors
homes for reasons of health, safety, accessibility and energy efficiency will
be considered. Low interest loans up
to $40,000 will be granted, based on
a home equity of at least 25 per cent,
and will be available to senior home
owners with incomes under $75,000.
The loan repayment is due when the
house is sold or the owner passes
away. There will also be a grant component for those low income seniors
who dont qualify. Protections for seniors on the work being done and cancelation of contracts are also included
in the bill. The program is expected
help about 260,000 Alberta seniors
throughout the province.

Rosebud graduates recognized

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Rosebud School of the Arts graduates
won numerous 2016 Critter Awards at
the annual awards night, June 6. Eleven
nominations had been directed to the
schools graduates and to productions
theyd been involved in.
Heather Pattengale, a 2011 graduate
of Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA),
won Best Actress in a Play for her role
in Rosebud Theatres Outside Mullingar.
Karl H. Sine, a 2004 graduate, won
Best Supporting Actor for his role in
The Boys Own Jedi Handbook, produced by Ground Zero Theatre and Hit
and Myth Productions. Sine also played
the lead in Theatre Calgarys The Crucible, which won Best Production of a
Play. Graduates Jesse Lynn Anderson
(2013), Justin Born (2010) and Lennette Randall (2012) were also in The
Crucibles cast and crew.
Amy Burks (2013) won Best Supporting Actress in a Play for her role
in Romeo and Juliet produced by The
Shakespeare Company and Hit and
Myth Productions.
Big congrats to all the nominees
and especially to the RSA grads who
won in their categories -- Karl, Amy
and Heather. I was so proud of them!
wrote Paul F. Muir, RSAs Education
Director, in an e-mail. The whole evening was really honoring to Rosebud
and all the work we do here.
Muir observed that graduates Cassia
Schramm and Laura Gillespie, whod
been nominated as Best Actress and
Best Supporting Actress in a Musical
for their roles in Rosebud Theatres
Wizard of Oz, lost to musical theatre
icons Susan Gilmour and Louise Pitre.
If youre going to lose, you may as
well lose to icons! he said.
I was in a state of complete disbelief, Pattengale wrote about the moment she was announced as winner.
I thought to myself, Wait. That was
my name. Heather Pattengale is my
name.... The people around me were
clapping and looking at me and it sunk
in. I was absolutely delighted!
Sine and Burks had similar feelings.
When the announcer said my name,
I was super surprised, Sine said in an
e-mail. To be acknowledged for your
work and by your community always
means a great deal.
I was overwhelmed, relieved and
stunned. A wonderful mix! Burks emailed. Afterward I was filled with
such a sense of gratitude to be honoured, when truly it was a host of
amazing artists who made that performance happen.
The awards night was a time of celebration and thanksgiving for everyone
in the theatre community, they said.
What struck me was the deep sense

Well Make You

SMILE

of community in that room, and the

camaraderie, Burks wrote. The room
was very lighthearted, supportive, and
full of celebration and it made me
proud to be a part of it.
It was great to get to cheer for all
my fellow Rosebud Theatre nominees
and to celebrate when fellow RSA
grads and friends won awards, wrote
Pattengale. Once the ceremony was
finished we all got to mingle and catch
up with one another. A celebration of
course, but also a moment to stop and
look around and give thanks for the
work we get to do and the wonderful
people we get to work with.
Its great to see the critics honour
the work thats going on in our community, Sine wrote. Equally, I think
its really important to acknowledge
the work of the critics, because they
are the ones that often generate buzz
and excitement about our shows and
then in turn get people out to see
them.

I cant really say I know what kind of
impact an award like this has. It would
be my hope that events like this bring
a greater awareness to the public about
the theatre community and the talent
that exists right here in their own city.
I hope that it will generate interest
in the work that I do, and also in Rosebud Theatre. I hope that perhaps it will

with before to take a chance in hiring
me, Pattengale said. But ... it doesnt
affect the nitty-gritty of acting work.
Each new role is still a challenge, both
exhilarating and terrifying.
My hope is that it will have a positive effect, Burks wrote. However, all
I can control is my own work ethic. I
will continue to strive to be the best I

Sandy Henry will be returning as the CFR AAA Bisons head coach for the second year this upcoming
season.
Henry took on the job last year when the coach
who was supposed to head the
team, Adam Redmond, accepted a
job with the Alberta Junior League.
While he wasnt planning on
coaching them again this year due
to the required time commitment
to the team, Henry decided to take
the position for one more year.
It was such a great experience
last year, said Henry. I kept my
name in the loop and said you
know what, I had such a good
time last year that if you dont think the right guy is
there I will do it. So Im back for another year.
There were two big factors in Henrys hesitation
in coaching the team. The first was his belief that
the spot should go to a high school teacher who can
coach, as the Bisons now have daytime practice.
He was also hesitant about the amount of time
needed to be dedicated to the program, especially
as he is also a scout for the Western Hockey League
and helps identify players for Alberta Junior Hockey
League.
Because of his scouting experience, he is aware
of talent available this year that could make the CFR
Bisons a top-end team.
This year he will focus on trying to get the players to improve in the beginning of the season rather
than focusing on wins and losses, but would like to
eventually win a league championship.
Henry has been involved with the Bisons for a
number of years, both as a part of the coaching staff
and as a parent. He was an assistant coach for two
years, helping them make it to the Telus Cup for the
first time, alongside then-head coach, Dan McDonald.
He grew up with hockey as a major part of his
life spending his weekends playing and watching the
sport. He began coaching his sons when they made
it to atom age and he credits them with his coaching
reputation, as both of them played for the Bisons and
the Western Hockey League; the youngest went on to
play in the Alberta Junior League.
I am hockey 24/7 and my family is too, said Henry. Sometimes I have to pinch myself, calling hockey
a job seems outrageous to me. I grew up a farm kid
and I drove a truck for a few years, so to be a hockey
guy seems a little far-fetched
Whether he will be back for the 2017-2018 season
will be decided at the end of this upcoming season.

As a junior high teacher in Calgary, staying
active equips me with the energy and focus
required to work in a fast pace (potentially
high-stress) environment. I consider myself
to be primarily a caregiver and secondly an
educator to children. I know that I am only
capable to care for others if I am investing in
my own health and wellness. I live an active
lifestyle outside of the gym by participating in
running and biking events, playing recreational
sports (see cast and crutches), hiking in the
mountains, and walking/exploring with my

ANDREA ROBERTS

To celebrate the ending of spring camp, the
Strathmore Spartans high school football team
took on Chestermere in a scrimmage on June 7.
About 40 players from Grades 9, 10 and 11 partook in the camp. The game was planned to test
new skills and allow players who have havent
played before to get a taste of a real game before
the new season starts in the fall.
A lot of learning has taken place over the last
couple of days so it has been a very successful
camp for us, said head coach Travis Gorski. We
focused on the new way of tackling that Football
Canada has actually introduced, which is more

focused on rugby tackle. We are really trying to

change the game of football and how it is played
but still keep the integrity of the game.
The new way of tackling is called safe tackling,
a technique where tacklers keep their head up
and uses the hips and hands to generate power
through the tackle.
Along with this new style of tackling, the camp
helped to hone the skills of the new and returning players.
This game is really good for the young guys
to get a feeling about how a game actually feels
like, said Isaiah Simwamu, a Grade 11 student
who plays as a receiver. Some of them it may be
their first game but most of them it will be their
first game as a player.

Wheatland Wildfire basketball wraps up

MANNY EVERETT
Times Contributor

Wheatland
Wildfires
spring basketball program
wrapped up this past weekend with five teams participating in the Shooting Stars
tournament.
The Wildfire boys teams
had a better time of the
weekend, all of them finishing with winning records,
said Kyle Larsen, main
coach of the program. The
U13 and U15 boys completed the weekend undefeated over the course of their
three games.
The U17 boys were handed one loss but also picked
up two wins.
The Wheatland Wildfire
girls teams had a tougher
time with both the U17 and
U13 girls ending up with

losing records. The U13 girls

did manage one win, but
suffered two losses, while
the U17 girls went winless
over the three game weekend.
Interest in the program
has expanded every spring
as new players come out to
join in learning new skills
and have fun playing scrimmages amongst themselves.
The kids really enjoy the
competition against other
teams that they have met
throughout
the
various
tournaments in Lethbridge
at the Preliminary Battle
of the Bridge, Calgarys Visions Tournament and then
Strathmores Shooting Stars
Tournament.

Venom strikes back

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

The Strathmore Venom lacrosse team was the
only team to beat the Lethbridge Cudas this season and is continuing to beat the top teams. They
also gave the Calgary Axemen their first loss of
the season.
However, the team has had a bit of a rollercoaster of a season taking some big wins and
losses.
We have been extremely inconsistent this season, said Mike Olver, Venom Junior B coach. We
have had great games and some that were not at
all.
The Calgary Axemen took their first loss of the
season on May 25 at the Strathmore Family Cen-

tre losing 16-11 while the Cuda took their only

loss at 8-7 on April 30.
While the Venom may be able to beat these top
teams, it appears that they are having a tough
time beating the weaker teams. Olver is unsure
why, but believes it may be a result of too much
confidence.
The Venom have two more games left in the
regular season, one against the Lacoka Locos and
the last against the Medicine Hat Sun Devils.
The team will need to win both to ensure a
spot in the playoffs. Olver said the team is strong
as a whole and the players are talented, but if
they make it to the playoffs they will need to become more consistent.
I really hope we make the playoffs, Olver
said. I think if we can get in there we can go far.

The Strathmore Filipino Canadian Associations (SFCA)
basketball team is helping to
represent Strathmore in the Calgary Filipino Basketball League
and were able to make it to the
championship game in their
first year. The team took on the
leagues defending champions
but lost in the end.
We represent Strathmore in
Calgary, said Lex Rueda, the
teams coach. So our small
town will be represented by
Filipinos but unfortunately we

dont have any Canadian big

guys who can play with us. But
next time we will invite them so
we can be a solid team.
While the Strathmore Filipino
Canadian Association has had
a number of basketball teams,
this is the first year they played
in the league and will be playing in it again next year.
However, Rueda is worried
the team will not be able to get
enough practice for the next
season as they have to rent out
the basketball courts either at
Strathmore High School or at
Holy Cross Collegiate School.
While playing basketball

helps players to meet other

Filipino associations in Calgary,
the SFCA also wants to create a
sense of community within the
town.
The purpose of this association is to help each other, he
said It is to have camaraderie,
so we can introduce our traditions and our other activities
from our native land to Canada.
Rueda hinted that some of
these customs and traditions
will be shown off during the
Strathmore Stampede Parade,
but for now it will remain a surprise.

Giving back in bleak times

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Despite current tough economic times in the oil and gas
industry, the Strathmore Oilmen
will give back to local charities
upon completion of the 10th Annual 4-Man Scramble Golf Tournament.
The tournament allows oil
and gas companies to mingle
with their clients while helping different charities such as
Canadian Tires Jumpstart and
Strathmore and Districts Christmas Hamper.
It is not a good year this
year but we are trying to keep it
positive, said Sean Duthie, one
of the tournaments organizers.
We want to get people out and
have a good time. We are try-

ing to boost everyones morale

I guess, we know it will be a
another challenging year so just
wanted everyone to have fun.
According to Duthie, he has
seen a number of Oilmens
golf tournament in other areas
with low turnouts or cancelled
because of the oil slump. With
this observation in mind, the
entry fees for this year were
dropped to $110 per player
from $125, and the tournament
already had 144 players registered to play.
Our goal is to raise money
for some of those charities and
help some of the local people
who are in oil and gas, said
Duthie.
The tournament took place
on June 16 at the Strathmore
Golf Club.
