Council is looking at purchasing a new ice-cleaning

machine for the Strathmore Family Centre this year.
As part of the 2015 budget, council approved the purchase of the new machine, and on Jan. 23 two proposals were received.
Big Hill Services quoted $158,500, after trade-in, for
an ICEBEAR Olympia machine. Delivery time would
take two weeks, the town already owns two machines
through the company, and staff at the Strathmore
Family Centre are pleased with the current service
through them.
The second quote came in from Joe Johnson Equipment at $144,705, after trade-in, for the ENGO 200SX.
This machine operates differently than the ones the
Family Centre staff currently use and would require
them to train with it. Delivery time would take six
months.
Administration is recommending that it be awarded to Big Hill Services for the following reasons; familiarity with the product and company, delivery time
frame of two weeks and need for consistent servicing
through only one company, said Municipal Clerk Jennifer Sawatzky.
Councillor Brad Walls questioned if it is worth it to
pay the extra $14,000 to bring the ice machine here
in two weeks when the ice will be shut down fairly
shortly after, especially since both companies offer
the same warranty and safety features.
Councillor Steve Grajczyk said he is in favour of
getting the $158,000, emphasizing the fact that in the
event of repairs different parts would be needed than
what is currently on hand.
It is so critical that you stay with the same machine, its going to end up costing you a lot more in
the long run if you change models. Its easy to build
up that money in parts, said Grajczyk.
For the first couple of years I cant see us having
much need for many parts because generally most of
that is covered under warranty, said Walls.
He understands there will be training costs, but if it
is not coming in for six months then staff will have all
of August and some of September before they would
need to use the machine.
I would still say we should go with the one they
(the staff) are used to. They are used to the service,
they have had quality service provided by the company in the past, they are all used to the machinery.
I would stay with the same one, said Councillor Pat
Fule.
Because both machines are listed to offer the same
warranty and safety features, and the one from Joe
Johnson is said to have a longer lasting battery, Walls
finds the recommendation confusing.

Hayes crowned an auctioneer champion

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Third year Wheatland Auctions owner, Cody Hayes, won
the All-Around Auctioneer Championship in Edmonton Jan.
29-31.
He admits it was a relief, considering it was his fourth attempt at trying to win the event.
I had competed in the three previous years, and the first
year I didnt place in the Top 5, two years ago I placed third,
last year I got runner-up and this year I goter done, said
Hayes.
He knew what to expect this year and went in with a calm
demeanor and sold as many as items he could.
I wanted to be more relaxed and approach it in such a
way (that is) more who I am and not worry about the pressure or anything like that, have a little fun and compete as
Im capable of, said Hayes.
The championship consists of a big crowd with judges that
base the auctioneers score on their selling efficiency.
Theres a big crowd and each contestant sells five items.
Theyre judged on their auction mechanics, chants, voiced
clarity, presentation, speed, rhythm and how you pick-up
bids in a crowd, said Hayes. The judges tabulate the votes,
they pick the Top 5 people and they go back to the finals.
In the finals you sell seven items and the judges go through

and pick.
Auction items were anything from jerseys and golf clubs to
tools and other various products.
Hayes admits you had to know how to handle your nerves
as you are competing against the top auctioneers in the industry as well as your peers.
A lot of these guys are in a small town, thats not so much
an issue as it is dealing with some guys that have been in the
business for a quarter-century, said Hayes.
He says that he wants to keep developing Wheatland Auctioneers and continue to build a successful business in the
Strathmore area.

Times TIDBITS
Did You Know?
The most popular flower on Valentines day is the
red rose. Reasons for the same are two-fold, one is
that the colour red represents love, and all lovers gift
each other a red rose irrespective of the occasion.
And, Valentines Day is the day of love, so the natural
choice has to be a red rose. The second reason is in
relation to the mythological significance of red rose, it
is the favorite flower of Venus - the Roman Goddess
of Love and Beauty and this also makes it the perfect
choice to be given to someone you love. This is one
flower that has also been popularised as being the
symbol of love and romance by poets, writers and
philosophers since time immemorial.

Author sponsored at council

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Remembering Our Roots author John
Godsman is putting together Volume 2
of his book, which is a compilation of
the 54 articles he wrote in 2013-2014.
On Feb. 4 he asked town council for a
sponsorship donation of $500 to help
offset the costs of producing the book,
as they had done with Volume 1.
Volume 2 is slightly different. The
front cover will show the Strathmore
elevator reflected in Kinsmen Lake. The
new book will have colour photographs
in it, other than that the format is basically the same, said Godsman. Council
approved the $500 sponsorship.
Both books will be available in the
Strathmore Municipal Library and Volume 1 is already on display at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. The new book
is expected to be available on April 29,
and will cost $45. Volume 1 is still avail-

able for $40. The extra $5 charge for

the second edition is due to the colour
photographs being used.
FREEDOM TO READ
The Town of Strathmore has proclaimed the week of Feb. 22-28 as Freedom to Read week. The week is about
promoting literacy, tolerance, knowledge and a love of reading among all
Canadians. Each year the Strathmore
Municipal Library creates a display of
some of the banned books, and lists
why they were banned in certain communities. Some of the books that have
been challenged are classics like To Kill
a Mockingbird and The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
The Youth Club of Strathmore is
bringing back the third annual Friday
Night Laughs on June 5 at the Strathmore Civic Centre. Councillor Pat Fule

said they hope to bring in three comedians for the evening. The Youth Club is
doing well, all of the programs are full
and more staff members are needed.
The Strathmore Assembly of Youth
(SAY) has raised $11,600 towards the
disc golf project they have been working on.
Pamela Campbell has resigned from
her role as president of the Strathmore
and District Chamber of Commerce
for personal reasons, said Councillor
Rocky Blokland. The board is looking
for more members to join the chamber.

Strathmore RCMP are currently

investigating a break and enter
into a vehicle. Sometime over the
early morning hours of February
6th unknown suspect(s) broke into
a vehicle parked at Days Inn Hotel.
A black Ford F350 Truck had its
window smashed and the vehicle
was gone through. If you have any
information that could help assist
in solving this investigation please
contact the Strathmore RCMP.

Its in you to give is the great motto of Canadian
Blood Services (CBS). From one blood donation,
red blood cells can be extracted for use in blood
loss and surgery; plasma, the liquid part of the
blood can be given to those with clotting problems;
and platelets can be used for cancer and transplant
patients. One unit of blood can help many. Make it
a goal of 2015 to give blood regularly.
At this the time of year, some people make
resolutions to change your life for the better. Why
not make a resolution to make someone elses life
better, too? If you are aware of people who are
lonely or depressed, try reaching out to them. Bring
them home for dinner or visit them in their own
home. It will help them and make you feel good too.
Speaking of resolutions, here are 7 goals for a
healthy life: sleep 7-8 hours per night; eat breakfast
every day; dont smoke; use alcohol moderately (or
not at all); dont eat between meals; maintain proper
weight; and exercise regularly. Perhaps you can
include these gems in your resolutions as well.
And heres an idea for losing weight: Canadians
consume an average of 26 teaspoonful of sugar per
day. If you cut that amount in half, youll lose 16
pounds in one year. Combine this with exercise,
youll lose even more.
We would also like to extend our thanks for
the pleasant relationships we have built with our

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~ Dennis & Debbie Kiemeny

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
The family name Kiemeny originates in Holland,
where Denniss grandfather Hubert Kiemeny was
born in 1886, and his grandmother Adrianna was
born in 1888.
They came to Canada in 1913, where his grandfather worked for the CPR, in and around Strathmore.
Their farm, which was purchased from the CPR, was
located four miles south, and one mile east of Nightingale. Grandmother Adrianna had a beautiful, productive garden admired by all. Hubert passed away
in June 1947, and broken hearted, Adrianna passed
away a month later.
Denniss father Andy was born in February on
the farm in 1925. His mother, Irene Tonneson, was
born in February 1931 in Bassano. Her father Larry,
born in 1896, came to Canada from Iowa to Brooks
to work for the CPR. He then moved to Conrich
where he met and married Ruth Johnson in 1919.
They then homesteaded in Chanceller and bought
CPR land. New opportunities took them back to
Conrich in 1937, which
is where Andy and Irene
met. They married in
1950 and resided on the
Kiemeny farm.
Dennis was born Jan.
29, 1952 in Calgary, the
first of five children. He
attended school in Strathmore through Grade 10,
and then attended the
Composite High School
in Drumheller for 18 months, where he took a
course in Agricultural Mechanics. His first job was
working on drilling rigs, but he went on to say that
he became a Jack of all Trades, Master of None!
For the past 37 years, he has worked his way up to
construction supervisor with Western Irrigation District in Strathmore. Reflecting back over the years,
he believes an incident around 1965, at the age of
13, was instrumental in him choosing this path for
employment. His family was away and during an
afternoon rainstorm, while doing his chores, he
was suddenly faced with a deluge of water coming
through the farmyard. After calling the WID Office,
he made contact with the Water Master who came
out to the farm to assist. In the dark using a homemade garden tractor, the WID guy stood on the back
with a shovel, a flashlight, and gunny sacks in one
hand and a tight grip on Denniss coat with the other. When they arrived at the canal, they found that a
wooden structure had washed out in the storm. So,
they filled the gunny sacks with dirt to temporarily
block the water, and next day a WID crew arrived to
replace the structure. That home-made garden tractor was quite the invention and deserves explaining - Denniss Dad had taken miscellaneous parts
of metal, and made a narrow gauge wheel base, the
back wheels were 15 inch tires from an old car, the
steering mechanism was from a grain cart, and the
front wheels were from a wheel barrow! A home-

made dune buggy, that could go anywhere.

Debbies family name is Merkel which originates
from Germany. Her grandfather Ignasias (Ned) was
born in Indiana in 1904, and came to Rockyford to
become a farm laborer in 1928. Her grandmother
Bertilla (Grammy) - a Heinzlmeir, was born in Iowa
in 1912, and moved to Rockyford with her family in
1920. After Grandpa Ned and Grammy were married in 1923, they moved to the Bell Farm three
miles northwest of Rockyford and purchased the
dray business, which transported goods from the
train to the various stores in town. Debbies father
Art was born in Calgary in November 1931, the first
of five children.
On her mothers side, Grandpa Charles Hatton
(Pop) born in England in 1904 immigrated to Canada in 1926, to Morrin, where he operated the Morrin Ferry that crossed the Red Deer River. Grandma
May Ostrom, (Nanny) was born in Rosetown, Sask.
in 1911. Charles and May married in 1931. In 1939
Pop joined the army and the family was stationed in
different towns across Alberta and B.C. After leaving
the army in 1943 they
operated the Crown
Lumber Yard in Gleichen. Debbies mother
Constance was born in
Drumheller in December 1934. Her Dad and
Mom met at a dance
at Meadowbrook Hall,
and later were married
in May of 1953 then resided in Rockyford
Debbie was born at
Calgary General Hospital in 1957, a twin, the
first half of number three out of six children! She
spent her younger years before marriage, working
with Al Oming, at the Alberta Game Farm in Edmonton, where her charges were two Siberian tigers
Hector and Tweetypie.
She found she was in her element, and this was
the best job she has ever experienced.
Dennis and Debbie met in the King Edward Hotel
in Strathmore in spring 1976, and they were married
in November that year. They have a son, two daughters, and six grandchildren.
In their younger years, both of them were very
involved in work, and community activities, such
as: Dennis enjoyed his horses, participated in pack
horse racing, was a hockey and baseball coach, a
member of the Strathmore Ag Society, Knights of
Columbus, and is now semi-retired from WID.
Debbie has been a leader with Brownies, Girl
Guides, a Dress Co-ordinator and Chaperone with
the Calgary Roundup Showband and the Calgary
Stetson Showband. She drove school bus for County
of Wheatland (Lyalta run) for 20 years and drove
feed truck for Cattleland for six years.
Now she is a grandmother to her grandbabies!
In reflecting for their search of their roots, they
found many similarities such as working for and
buying land from the CPR. It was a common denominator for many others.

WHATS THE GOOD NEWS?

I want to begin by saying how much I
appreciate the newspapers we have in
Strathmore. Both the Strathmore Times
and the Strathmore Standard do an
admirable job of getting the news out
there in a timely and relevant format.
But when I think of news in general,
I find it hard to keep a positive view.
Watching the 11 oclock news on TV,
or listening to the news on the hour on
my radio, reading news magazines or
yes, even the newspapers, I notice that
the percentage of bad news to good
news is often overwhelming. This is not
the fault of the news agencies by any
means. It is a reality of our world.
But, I also need some good news to
keep my balance. Some good news
to remind me of the positives and the
blessings we have in our world. So I
am always thankful when looking at
the paper, or watching TV, to hear of
the positives that are happening in our
midst as well.
I think sometimes the same thing
holds true for people when they think
of the church, of God, of religion. For
a long time the overall perception
was that God was all about rules and
regulations and punishment and bolts
of lightning. That if you were a Christian
you couldnt do anything fun, that life
was all dull and boring, and there was
no real good news to be had, because
everyone lived in fear.
However, when one actually stops and
looks at the Word of God, hears the
stories and comes to recognize the
place and the ministry of Christ in our
midst, here in our community, suddenly
we recognize some amazing good
news, some positives in our midst
from God, as well.

Over history the church has played

a significant and positive role in our
world. Many of the common sense laws
and rules that govern us and give us
order came from Gods original rules,
The Ten Commandments not given
to condemn, but rather to give order.
Things like not stealing, not harming,
like respecting the healthcare and
community support agencies, which
began out of a Christian model of
caring for, loving ones neighbors and
family and friends. Good news, to say
the least.
Gods whole role in creation is good
news. Just the other day a friend found
a little cluster of those little purple
and yellow Jolly Jump Ups, blooming
in her yard, surrounded by snow
Gods colorful creation that reminds us
spring is coming good news, to say
the least.
And even the promise Jesus makes
that even when things are hard, when
we face challenges beyond what we
think we can with stand, He says Lo I
am with you always, even to the end of
the age Matthew 28:20.
Good news in the most!
I know it seems that we hear more
bad news than good. It seems as if the
world is facing more challenges and
struggles than ever before, or maybe
they just seem like bigger challenges.
But may we find hope and joy and
remember the promise that from the
beginning of time, our God created and
provided good news for all people
if only we take the time to look and see
and recognize it. May you find good
news to bless you this day.

Measures to protect
Canadians
FROM THE OFFICE OF
KEVIN SORENSON

The Honourable Kevin Sorenson, Minister of State (Finance)
and Member of Parliament
(Crowfoot) supports the anti-terrorism legislation announced by
Prime Minister Harper on Friday
that will protect Canadians from
the evolving threat of terrorism
and keep our communities safe.
The world is a dangerous
place and, as most brutally
demonstrated by last Octobers
attacks in Ottawa and SaintJean-sur-Richelieu. Canada is
not immune to the threat of
terrorism, said Minister Sorenson. The proposed legislation
will provide Canadian law enforcement and national security
agencies with additional tools
and flexibility to keep pace with
evolving threats and better protect Canadians here at home.
This legislation is in line with
measures taken by our allies.
Our Conservative Government
is taking action to ensure our
law enforcement and national
security agencies can: counter
those who advocate terrorism;
prevent terrorist travel and the
efforts of those who seek to use
Canada as a recruiting ground;
and disrupt planned attacks on

Canadian soil.
I am pleased that the proposed
legislation
includes
checks and balances to ensure it
respects the rights of Canadians
and complements other legislation passed by our Government
in order to better protect Canadians and secure institutions,
including the Combating Terrorism Act and the Strengthening
Canadian Citizenship Act.
The proposed legislation includes a comprehensive package of measures that will:
criminalize the advocacy or
promotion of terrorism offences
in general;
counter terrorist recruitment
by giving our courts the authority to order the removal of terrorist propaganda online;
enhance the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS)s
powers to address threats to the
security of Canada while ensuring that courts maintain oversight;
provide law enforcement
agencies with enhanced ability to disrupt terrorism offences
and terrorist activity;
enhance the Passenger Protect Program by further mitigating threats to transportation security and preventing travel by
air for the purpose of engaging

in terrorism;
make it easier for law enforcement agencies to detain
suspected terrorists before they
can harm Canadians and to
toughen penalties for violating
court ordered conditions on terrorist suspects;
enable the effective and responsible sharing of relevant
national security information
across federal departments and
agencies to better identify and
address threats;
ensure that national security agencies are better able to
protect and use classified information when denying entry and
status to non-citizens who pose
a threat to Canada; and,
provide witnesses and other
participants in national security
proceedings and prosecutions
with additional protection.
I can add to these efforts the
fact that our Government is also
working with communities to
prevent radicalization and intervene when individuals show
signs of becoming radicalized,
said Sorenson. As the former
Chair of the House of Commons
Public Safety and National Security Committee, I first learned of
these kinds of efforts and I am
pleased that local communities
continue to pursue them.

Wildrose remains committed

to protecting Alberta families
HEATHER FORSYTH
Wildrose Official Opposition Leader

Is anyone else experiencing dj vu?
It wasnt long ago Alison Redford was warning us about a Bitumen Bubble, talking up new
taxes, and complaining her government wasnt
making enough revenue to balance the books or
avoid new debt.
Now, Premier Jim Prentice is talking about a
Price Trough in oil, and hes using it as an excuse to openly muse about increasing the price
of everything for Alberta families.
Indeed, Premier Prentice is considering destroying whats left of the Alberta Advantage by
bringing in a sales tax, increasing income tax
rates, returning health premiums and even implementing pop and gasoline taxes.
Despite the fact he swore new taxes were off
the table when he ran for the leadership of the
PC Party, Premier Prentice has opened the door
to some dangerous precedents that are patently
un-Albertan.
This government has a spending problem, not
a revenue problem, and in these tough economic
times, its important Premier Prentice understand
this before he makes any brash decisions that
will cause harm to Alberta.
The PCs couldnt balance the books with $120
oil, and they wont be able to with $50 oil. The
problem here isnt the price of oil. Oil prices are
cyclical. They go up and down. The waste around
here, however, goes on forever.
Just last month my Wildrose colleagues and
I took the government to task after we learned
they spent $1 million on a Zamboni garage for
a public skating rink that never got built. They
built the garage, but not the rink. The garage,
they say, will be used as a toolshed now.
This is sheer incompetence.
Before that, we sounded the alarm when we
discovered Premier Prentice decided not to expand the governments salary disclosure policy

to all government Agencies, Boards and Commissions. Shortly thereafter, we discovered more
than 10,000 employees at Alberta Health Services
are earning more than $100,000 per year.
We also recently called on the government to
sell the Federal Building, the palace built for PC
MLAs complete with the Premiers penthouse
suite, rooftop garden and movie theatre. This
would save taxpayers almost half a billion dollars.
Weve also called for an MLA wage rollback.
The PCs, if you remember, voted themselves a
raise, right after the last election.
But is Premier Prentice willing to look himself
in the mirror to find savings, or will he pass it all
on to the taxpayer? The first choice is more likely. Remember, Premier Prentice himself spends
more than $4.3 million annually on salaries for
his inner circle in Edmonton.
Now, Premier Prentice is considering breaking his own governments fixed election law, and
calling an illegal, expensive election, one year
early, just to ensure the PCs remain in power.
This is not the kind of thing the government
should be focusing on right now.
Premier Prentice needs to get serious about the
economy, and stop musing about the idea of new
taxes while he continues to waste hundreds of
millions of dollars on things such as MLA offices,
corporate welfare and political salaries.
Until then, Wildrose remains the only party in
Alberta committed to not raising your taxes.
Alberta deserves a government willing to spend
wisely, cut waste and save for the future, but Premier Prentice will go the other direction and ask
families to pay for the mistakes of his party, before he asks anything of himself or his friends in
government.
Wildrose has had a challenging few months,
but Im proud to say our mission continues. Our
team has continued to do great work protecting
Alberta families from this PC government.
That will never change.

Hitmen fundraiser helps Strikers baseball

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Langdon Little League Strikers baseball
club is doing a Night with the Hitmen fundraiser
on March. 15 when the Calgary Hitmen take on
the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The club is selling tickets to the game and proceeds raised will go towards new equipment and
pitching mounds for the association.
We certainly need a portable pitching mound
because currently ours doesnt fit the new standards that they have. Those things arent cheap,
theyre around $4,000-$5,000 to get here, said Denis Gosselin, Langdon Little League president. We

dont need one, we need two or three to legitimize

what we do. You cant have older kids in there
throwing on flat turf when they should be on a
mound.
The association knows it will not make much off
of the fundraiser, but it is a great opportunity to
watch great hockey.
You hope something bigger becomes of it,
were not making a fortune on this, its a good opportunity for us and were grateful for it, said Gosselin. It was one of the district-B teams is what
it was. They kind of made an agreement with the
Hitmen and everybody got an opportunity to be a
part of it.
Ticket sales could be better for the event as the
purchases have been slow.

Weve only sold 23 tickets and we have to sell another 77.

You get a night out, you get a voucher for a playoff game for
a kid, and a good opportunity to go to another game, said
Gosselin.
Tickets are available for $20 each at the Mountain View
Credit Union in Langdon or by logging onto www.strikersbaseball.ca and e-mail one of the representatives from the
team.

Husbands work is never done!

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
If theres one thing Id like know, its where certain marriage customs and traditions began. How
did we get the roles and jobs in our marriages?
Take Christmas lights, for example. By now, you
all know I hate putting up outdoor lights, and that
Im forced to do this. Who decided that putting up
coloured lights high on houses, equals Christmas
Spirit? How does lighting up a house like a Vegas
casino every year, tie in to the Baby Jesuss birth?
Yet every Christmas, husbands around the world,
climb rickety ladders, brave gale force winds and
snow, and risk their very lives, to light up the
night! I mean, its like youre in a circus act, or
something! There are lady trapeze artists in circuses why cant the wives put up Christmas
lights? Why does the husband have to be the guy
from the Flying Walendas?
Ive fallen from a ladder, and Ive really come
to fear the falling and the landing! As far as Im
concerned, there should be three Christmas light
options: no lights, our wives put up the lights, or
we string lights along the sidewalk!
Another job husbands have gotten over the
years is the security guard.
Allow me to explain. If theres a squeak, creak,
or thunk, its the husbands job to find and neutralize the noise. It doesnt matter who or what
may be lurking in our dark house, we boldly
go where no one else wants to go! Now, I have
no martial arts training, Im no Army Ranger or
Navy SEAL. In fact, the only fight Ive been in was
when I was 11. We were rival paperboys and he
had been bullying me, so I followed (stalked him)
on his route. We punched each other in the face,
walked away, and that was the extent of my fight
club!
So this is the typical training we husbands get
in order to face the burglar in the night! God
knows why, but we also seem to be able to find
some sort of weapon in the dark. Yes, how many
of us ninjas have grabbed a tennis racquet, flash-

light, or even a lamp, to square off with the enemy?! Im sure glad Ive never met an intruder face
to face Id hate to wreck my perfect fighting
record!
I dont know about your house, but in mine,
Ive become the terrible smell/mess remover. My
wife Debbie, has a nose thats almost as sensitive
as your typical bloodhound! Something in the garbage, a slightly moldy strawberry, all can make
her instantly queasy. Im the guy responsible to
manhandle and remove spoiled potatoes, smelly
garbage bags, and sadly, the odd rover mistake!
The first 10 minutes in our newest home last year,
was one example. The previous owners had two
little dogs, and our beloved Brodie decided he had
to mark his territory. A 13 year old dog who never
made mistakes indoors, managed to pee and crap
on the downstairs carpet! When Deb saw this, she
literally turned pale and had to look away. Then
my unique super powers kicked in, and I scooped
up the poo, and Green Machined the pee spot. I
was like a Special Op on a dangerous mission!
Meanwhile, my guilty looking dog had become
my foreman, and quietly watched! In fact, over the
years, I seem to have become his personal valet,
his butler, if you will. I feed him, walk him, and
shovel up his crap from the back yard! Im really
livin the dream!
I know that wives also have numerous jobs in
a marriage, but I sure am curious as to how these
chores got divided the way they did! Of course,
I dont want to complain too much. I mean, they
get to deal with labour, and Ive seen that twice
ouch! In fact, if chores were a game of Poker, not
having to give birth would be like holding four
aces every time!

County approves Recreation

Needs Assessment
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Wheatland County approved for the
Edmonton-based RC Strategies to come
into the area and do a Recreation Needs
Assessment.
It was approved on Feb. 3, so well
move forward with that project. Itll provide needs assessment for recreation
and leisure services. Whatever comes
out of that report will be brought to
council and recommendations to move
forward with their findings, said Alan
Parkin, chief administrative officer. Its
a new project, something that has come
up in the last three months, in regards
to doing this study.
The company will come in and determine what the county needs recreationally. The assessment might be completed with Wheatland Further Education.
RC Strategies has immense experience in organizing strategies to provide

an active Needs Assessment to determine what counties need to meet recreation facilities standards.
There will be four phases that the
county will go through, and they are
Phase 1: project orientation (1 week);
Phase 2: research (8 weeks); Phase
3: engagement (11 weeks) and Phase
4: Recreation Needs Assessment (4
weeks).
The county is expected to get a report
back by June to take into council to see
what needs are necessary.
COUNTY BRIEFS
Councilor Rex Harwood brought forward to council an update on the building of a water treatment plant in Gleichen.
He concluded that the approximate
costs that retroact back to April 2014
will be $8.8 million plus $13.5 million
that will include a raw water reservoir
and a pipeline that will go from Standard to Gleichen.

The subject of mandating rain barrels on new developments

was brought forward to council on Jan. 21.
The proposed amendment to the Land Use Bylaw would see
the addition of rain barrels on new residential lots become mandatory.
Cancorp Property Group, developers of Wildflower Ranch, and
Ovation Homes wrote letters of opposition to the amendment.
Curtis Palmer, president of Ovation Homes, was on hand for
the public hearing and spoke about his concerns, which included
the possible risk they pose to the foundation if not installed properly and the freezing of the water in the barrels during the winter.
As a builder we are required to grade each home with positive
drainage away from the foundation, said Palmer.
It is the homeowners responsibility to maintain those grades
after possession, including correcting any settlement. Water in
basements and foundation issues caused by water will not be
warrantied by the builder or the third party warranty provider if
it is determined those grades have not been maintained.
He continued on to say that in his experience with homeowners today, everyones time is valuable and they are looking for low
maintenance in everything they do and he would suggest that the
majority of homeowners wouldnt want a rain barrel, but admits
to not asking them either.
Werner Fischer, with the planning and development department for the town, said that the development permit and building
permit processes try to ensure that positive drainage is provided
away from the building without impacting adjacent properties.
In areas of town where we do not have storm sewer were
compelled to use streets and the lanes because they are an essential part of the overall drainage for the town, said Fischer.
There is an issue with storm water management in certain areas of the town. Many areas downtown, for example, dont have
storm sewer; all of the new areas do have storm water drainage,
however.
I believe certainly in some of areas of the town, especially in
those areas where we dont have storm sewers, rain barrels are
going to be required and were going to have to figure out how
to make them work, said Fischer.
Councillor Rocky Blokland questioned if it will really make that
much of a difference, especially since those barrels will still need
to be emptied, and will likely be drained onto peoples lawns if
they are not used for gardening, or other uses.
Youre reducing the rate of release, thats what this is all about,
said Fischer.
In Fischers opinion making rain barrels mandatory is about
water conservation, stormwater management and water table
management. There are cases where everything has been done
right on a property, and suddenly 20 years later they have water
issues that werent there before due to rising water tables. He
said typically one neighbour adding a sump pump resolves the
situation, but there are often other ways to deal with it. In some
cases extending the downspout further away from the house has
helped some people mitigate the problem.

Confidence for Curtis

WANDA REINHOLDT
Hope Bridges Society

Winter 2015 launches Hope Bridges
third year doing regular programming.
Since the beginning, they have had a
very fun and engaging adult workshop
called Go Green Upcycling, which encourages participants to take something
that could be recycled or thrown away
and turn it into something that is useful
and beautiful.
Pieces like a large mural called
Flight made out of plastic gift cards
mounted on an old doorframe, and the
bench called Belong, a pew made into
a beautiful community bench for the library, are now adorning the community
of Strathmore. In addition, many participants homes are blessed with pieces
that they have made.
One of the participants in this Upcycling workshop is Curtis. Curtis is a
young man who has been coming to
Hope Bridges workshops and events
regularly for the past year. He attends
with a job coach from the AIM Society
who gives him the support he needs to
walk safely and also help him handle
any details. Curtis loves meeting with his
friends at Upcycling and enjoys sharing

his love for colour, shapes, and music.

Curtis began his journey creating at
Upcycling with some nervousness and
doubt about his ability to do this well.
In particular, he was concerned that the
choices he was making would work and
that they would look good. Each time he
was creating, he would ask Facilitator,
Trish, and Creative Support, Heather, if
what he was doing was ok. They would
simply encourage him in his exploration
and help him feel at ease with his choices. Recently, Trish reported that she
realized that Curtis is no longer questioning his choices. In fact, he seems to
be confidently making decisions about
what he is going to choose to do and
is enjoying sharing what he has done
with others.
Hope Bridges goal is to create a place
where adults know that they belong and
can create in an inclusive safe and affirming environment without judgment.
It is thrilling to see individuals like Curtis rising to a new level of connection
and confidence in himself and in his expression.
If you would like to see more about
Hope Bridges, please see this video online (http://www.hopebridges.ca/video/994/).

Another request was made for the

Cheadle is hoping to benefit from
these tax receipts because it will allow

issue tax receipts, said Alan Parkin,
Wheatland County Chief Administrative
officer.
Donations will come directly to the
county, well do a tax receipt and then
give a cheque back to Cheadle. Its just
a flow through to issue tax receipts.
The tax receipts will be beneficial because the Cheadle Hall, as well as the
ball diamonds, playground and rink, is
operated on donations.
The facilities were solely operated on
the general publics money before the

Alberta
ambulance
rate changes
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
At the beginning of January new standardized rates
were introduced across the
province for ambulance services. The new rates are the
same for all Alberta residents, no matter where you
are in the province.
Before it was always a
base rate, it was always the
same and then mileage,
so obviously a trip out to
Hussar would be more expensive than a trip a block
away, said Rob Witty, director of WADEMSA.
The previous rate in this
area was $152 with $3.12 per
km for EMS response. If the
response included a transfer
to a hospital, or any other facility it was $280 plus $3.12
per km.
Before January of this
year we had close to 40 different rates for ground ambulance service in the province. So depending on where
you were if you had a medical emergency and you dialed 911 and EMS came, you
could pay a different rate if
you were in an accident on
Hwy #63 or if you were travelling in the mountains, or if
you were at home, said Timothy Wilson, with the Government of Albertas Ministry
of Health.
Now no matter where you
are when you need emergency medical help, you will
pay either $385 if you are
transported to hospital or
$250 if you were treated on
the scene. So it is the same
rate for everybody across the
province.
Its not clear yet how the
rate changes could affect
WADEMSA. Witty said it
would take some time to see
how things go.
The hope is that it will
balance out. Thats something well be analyzing to

see, said Witty.

Alberta Health Services,
who we contract through,
has sort of given us assurances that if it negatively impacts our funding that they
would have some sort of
compensation mechanism in
there.
Wilson confirmed that in
all of the contracts for EMS
service across Alberta there
is a clause to amend the contract if the billing revenue is
affected.
In addition to this being
the fairest way to ensure
that all Albertans are paying
the same amount of money
to receive the same kind of
service, it does benefit those
living in rural, remote areas
who are often paying more,
said Wilson.
The fees brought in by
ground ambulance response
cover approximately 20 per
cent of the actual funding
amount needed for each
call; the other 80 per cent is
funded by the Alberta Government. There is a $200
surcharge added on to the
fee for non-resident patients,
whether they are transported
or not. Seniors 65 and older
that are enrolled in the Coverage for Seniors program
will not receive a bill for
ambulance service. Health
Canada pays the user fee for
First Nations people. Alberta
Human Services covers the
cost for Albertans receiving
health benefits through Income Support, Adult Health
Benefits or Alberta Child
Health Benefits.
Albertas ambulance bills
sit somewhere around the
middle in terms of what
residents will be expected to
pay. The Assiniboine area in
the Prairie Mountain Health
region has the highest flat
rate in the country at $530.
In Winnipeg an ambulance
trip costs their residents
$512.

County approves
Marigold levy rates
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
Marigold Library System
has established their levy
rates per capita for 2015 and
2016 and Wheatland County
council approved the signing
of the levy schedule-C.
That was the approval
of the fees for the next two
years. The requisition was
in order to operate libraries
within the county, said Alan
Parkin, Wheatland County
Chief Administration Officer.
A big share of their money
comes from the province,
they also get it from a local
level as well.
The municipalities are instrumental in how the libraries operate.
The municipalities pay
Marigold for the services that
we do. We provide services
that range from the acquisition of material to the payment of subscriptions, subcontracts for resources that
are online, the provision of
delivery services, consultation and we also maintain
a library computer system,
said Michelle Toombs, Marigold Library System chief
executive officer. The provincial government has provided us a levy rate system,
so that library systems can
provide these services to our
municipalities and by doing
so with others in a membership collaborative, were able
to make cost savings purchases.
Here are some of the high-

lights:
The members will have
to follow the per capita
guidelines as follows, 2015 $ 8.99 per capita and in 2016
- $9:39 per capita has to be
paid to the Marigold Library
System.
The rural areas of the
county would be paying this
levy.
In the second part includes those municipalities
that have municipal library
boards. The per capita in
2015 for those members
would be $5.71 and $ 5.83 in
2016.
Part 3 is devoted to those
that have municipal boards,
where in 2015 and 2016 a
$4.50 per capita will be paid
to Marigold Library System
directly.
Strathmore would be
paying the second and third
levy.
Levies are very critical in
the operation of libraries because a majority of its revenue comes from the tax.
60 per cent of our revenue
comes from municipal levies,
said Toombs. If we didnt
have that, we wouldnt be in
operation and the smaller libraries in Wheatland County
would have to close because
they couldnt afford the start
up costs or the continuing
costs to maintain the services
that we provide to them.
Parkin added that when
the proposal for the levy
rates came out in June, the
rates had stayed the same
from the previous contract.

Leaving a legacy
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
When Strathmore resident George
Pinchbeck passed away in June of
2014, he left a hole in the community.
He had been an active member of many
organizations and a lot of the things he
did in his life benefitted the youth in
the community in some way.
He had spent 38 years as an educator,
and was always interested in
what was best for the youth
and would get involved in
various projects to bring
more options to the town for
the kids.
Terry Desserre, Pinchbecks son-in-law, spoke to
town council on Feb. 4 about
a new state-of-the-art, electronic LED baseball scoreboard the family would like
to install at the Kinsmen Park
ball diamonds.
Since my father-in-law
passed away, George Pinchbeck, weve
been talking about things that we could
do with the money thats been donated
to his estate, and something that was
near and dear to him was the baseball
and following the kids around, said
Desserre.
Whether the games were in Alberta,
BC or even the United States, the Pinchbecks would try to be there.
Our family has been involved in
many sports through the years. George
excelled at track and field and baseball
as a young man, said Marianne Pinchbeck, Georges wife.
When their kids, Holly and Geoff were
younger, George would drive them to
hockey games, basketball games, swim-

ming and gymnastics.

In recent years George and I loved
watching our grandchildren Scott and
Mitchell play hockey and baseball, said
Pinchbeck.
It was decided to take the money
donated and use it towards buying a
scoreboard for Strathmore baseball and
the Kinsmen Park baseball diamond.
Strathmore baseball will pay for the
installation, and pay for all the parts.
We have put together the
monies for the scoreboard,
theyll do all the work to put
it up, to put in all the supplies and our request (for
council) is the power supply
for it, said Desserre.
Because the Reds are only
playing a couple games a
day on the weekend it would
cost approximately $20 per
year to run the board, and
the power could be tied in
to the fire hall.
It will be located in the
back corner of the diamonds, near the
firefighters memorial, which will allow
people watching the games to see it directly off centre field.
Early on the Pinchbecks knew Strathmore was an excellent community to
raise their family, and that love of the
community has never changed.
The people of this area helped us
so much while George was so ill and
continue to support me and my family
in so many ways, said Pinchbeck.
I know he would approve of leaving the community a little better place
by our family donating an (electronic)
scoreboard at the baseball diamond.
The scoreboard is set to go up when
the ground thaws, hopefully in April.

Congratulations, from

Contracting, I would like to
personally thank Ron Warrack
for the opportunity to work with him
on the preservation of one of the towns
oldest buildings. Ron had purchased
the building not knowing at the time
exactly how he would utilize it but
maintained the vision of restoring the
tired old building, bringing it back to its
former glory, and helping to preserve
the downtown core. His goal was to
reconstruct it as close as possible to
its original look while incorporating
todays building codes. To this point, the
Town of Strathmore was great to work
with in helping provide direction and

options while maintaining the building

and development guidelines. Through
deconstruction we did come across a
few challenges that you would expect to
find in a 100 year old building. Although
these findings were going to add cost to
the project, Ron took them in stride just
focusing on the end goal.
The building was originally built
for the Union Bank of Canada. In
more recent times it was affectionately
known as the Old Standard Building.
Now it is once again back in business.
We wish all the best to Kelly Warrack,
Katelyn Haffner, & Jillian Warrack
in the opening of their new business;
The Standard One Stop Shoe Shop.

New art display brings pizzazz

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
A new display is up for the month of
February at the Strathmore Municipal
Library. A collection of pieces by ceramic artist Kathryn Ransom is gracing
the upper shelves of the library, by the
new comfy chairs, until Feb. 27.
Ransom first began working with
clay after her sister introduced her to it.
Ive always been really interested in
making things and I was working in
stained glass, copper foil, which I really
liked but then my sister started working in clay, so I started playing around
with it and I love it, really love it, said
Ransom.
I love the way that you can take
something that is just a ball of mud and
form it into something that says something or that is functional that someone
can use and enjoy for years.
Ransom also used to sew, and with
her ceramic work she will often use
sewing techniques to create fun and
texturally interesting pieces. She uses
surfaces like old doilies or linens to
add texture and in kind of a way to
reuse something that someone spent
an awful lot of time making, I guess
appreciate it in a new way.
I like putting some kind of gesture
in my pieces, something that makes
it almost look like it is going to twirl
away or going to get up, said Ransom.
She doesnt work the way we would
imagine a typical pottery artist, using
the wheel and forming her shapes from
there. Instead she works with slabs of
clay, rolling them out, adding her texture or designs and then cutting out the
pieces. Its then quite the process to put
the piece together. She will cut a 45 degree angle on the edges of the slab and
scores it. The clay must have the right
amount of moisture out of it. She then
puts some slip on it, liquefied claybefore putting the two sides together.
She said it can take some time to
learn the art of working with the slabs,
trying to determine how much pressure
to use, when to stop, when to smooth
something out but it also gives her an
opportunity to play with shapes more
than using a wheel would.
With what I am doing I can cut out
any shape, so I get a lot of inspiration
from the figure and clothing, things like
that. I am looking at a line that I can
take and shape, so you can draw out
something two dimensionally and then
you put it together with another three
to five sides and you get something
completely different, said Ransom.
I love it, I think Kathys work is exquisite and it adds a new pizzazz to the
library. Just in the (time) it has been up
we have received many positive comments on her work and Im going to
have a very hard time letting it go at the
end of the month, said Carmen Erison,
assistant director of library services for
the Strathmore Municipal Library.
All of the pieces on display are for
sale, and there is a price list available

A new singing experience

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

For the first time the Strathmore

Childrens Choir sent six of its choral
students to sing with the Alberta Childrens Choir (ACC) annual performance.
ACC gives choral students between the
ages of 11-15 a chance to meet other
choir students in their area, and train
under the direction of an internationally recognized conductor. This year for
ACC South Faye Klassen, was the conductor with Christy Elsner as the guest
conductor. The gala concert was held
on Feb. 7 at the Knox United Church
in Calgary.
I feel that it is important for all of
my singers to learn from other choral
directors as it gives them exposure to
other ways of learning songs and different techniques. It is also a great experience to sing with such a large group of
talented singers, said Loralee Laycock,
Strathmore Childrens Choirs musical

director.
Kianna Doig, Alysse Doig, Rayanne
Laycock, Claire Webb, Sarah Dronyk
and Shelby Laycock are all members of
the Finale Choir, and this was their first
year singing with the ACC.
I wanted to sing in ACC so I could
be a part of a different choir and learn
things from someone new, said Shelby.
Because singing in a choir with that
many kids who all blend so well together is amazing. And learning things from
a different conductor is a great experience, said Rayanne, about why she
wanted to participate in the ACC.
It is a good experience and you can
learn new things to improve your singing, said Kianna.
Each of the girls had a different reason why they enjoyed practicing for the
gala.
Being able to sing with lots of other kids from Alberta and learning new
things from the instructor, said Alysse.
I loved the rehearsals and working

with the conductor. She had so many

great ways to get us to sing better and
work together as a group, said Rayanne.
I loved singing with so many people
who were so talented and learning so
much from our conductor, said Shelby.
Being a part of choir brings something new to each of the girls, including
a good experience and providing musical ability.
I love choir because I think singing

with other people who love music and

learning to sound great together is important, said Shelby.
Choir is important because it teaches you to sing together in a group but
sound like one voice. It helps you work
together towards a common goal, said
Rayanne.
All of the girls had a great time and
plan to participate in ACC again next
year.

The sixth annual Hockey Day in GA was a fun experience for everyone on Feb. 7. The festivities included playing a lot of games on the outdoor arena,
skating and getting autographs from Flames alumni Dana Murzyn and playing ball hockey on the frozen pavement.

Hockey day in GA a fulfilling experience

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

Whenever a current or former NHLer comes to your
community the excitement
always rises, and that is what
happened at the sixth annual Hockey Day in GA on
Feb. 7.
Canadas game was being played proudly by many
young Pond Hockey League
players as they had smiles
on their faces all day despite
the colder weather.
The day consisted of a
lot of hockey being played,
whether it was playing on
the freshly flooded outdoor
arena, split ice games on the
indoor rink or playing ball
hockey on the frozen pavement.

One of the highlights of

the day was having former
Calgary Flames defencemen
Dana Murzyn skate with
young kids during a game of
shinny.
The 14-season veteran enjoyed every moment of the
day and to connect with the
kids was special for him.
I havent been out to
Gleichen to do it. Ive done
hockey days in Cold Lake
and different places around
Alberta, said Murzyn. Its
been great, lots of kids having a lot of fun and thats
what hockey is all about.
I always think the biggest
thing that gets overlooked is
what a great game it is and
you dont have to play for a
living to enjoy it.
He felt that it brings a

sense of community to the

area and is a great way to
build character.
I think it reinforces to the
kids that it doesnt matter
what level youre playing at
or youre playing against or
what youre doing, you can
have fun and build character
through sport and community, said Murzyn.
He accredits a lot of the
community
involvement
to the work of the Flames
Alumni Association.
Weve got a real strong
alumni group in Calgary and
a lot of guys do the charity work in the communities
and support hockey, said
Murzyn.
According to organizers,
the day ran smoothly and
hats go off to the staff, and

mainly the kids, for coming

out and enjoying the experience.
I talked to the kids
throughout the day and so
far theyve unanimously said
(theyre) having a great day,
said Celeste Pirie, Hockey
Day in GA coordinator. Our
coaches are great, they dont
force those little guys to stay
out there for the whole hour,
thats one of our flexibilities
is about the kids, having
fun.
She really hoped that the
day would provide a sense
of what Canadian culture is
all about.
Its woven into our cultural DNA, so just to give them
a foothold on that is what
were really aiming for, said
Pirie.

The UFA Bisons came back after a
lengthy three week break showing
signs of rust but started to find their
rhythm in the third period to beat the
Calgary Northstars 3-0 on Feb. 7 at
the Max Bell Centre.
It took a while to adjust to get
things rolling again because of that
break, thats just a little bit too long
to be at your best. I thought the goals
that were scored were very good
goals and our goaltending was very
good, said head coach Dan MacDonald.
We killed penalties well in fact
we scored a goal while we were
shorthanded. We got a ways to go yet
to get back in that real groove that
we had going there, just because we
havent played enough games recently, but well get there.
The boys were able to gain momentum off the win and gain a sense
of what the last two games will mean
heading into the playoffs.
The fact that we shut them out,
thats a real plus right now. In the
playoffs, you have to play good defence in your own end and you have
to have strong goaltending and we
had that, so thats something weve
been trying to get better at, said
MacDonald.
The game against the Northstars
was a good way for the Bisons to
get back into the intense atmosphere
that they will see for the rest of the
season.
I think the biggest thing is to get
back in there and play with the pressure of the game, said MacDonald.
Guys are tighter and will check you
harder and it took us awhile to get
sorted out again.
The Bisons coaching staff are going
to use these next two games to instill
the playoff mentality in the players.
Gary Haden had two goals, while
Barrett Sheen added one in the victory.
To conclude the regular season, the
Bisons will play in Red Deer on Feb.
13 (8 p.m.) and in Calgary against the
Flames on Feb. 15 (2:30 p.m.).

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings played to a 4-0 win over the Airdrie Thunder on Feb 7 at the Family Centre.

Kings finish strong; get Cubs first round

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings quite possibly
played their most complete game of
the season as they blanked the Airdrie
Thunder 4-0 to end the regular season
on Feb. 7 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
It seemed as though the team had a
jump in their stride to begin the game,
as they found themselves up 3-0 after
the first.
I think the guys feel good in there
as everyone contributed. In the past
couple of weeks the results havent
been there on the scoreboard, but
weve played some real good hockey
in stretches, said head coach Jeremy
Blumes. We got a lot of talent, ability
and smarts in there and when we apply
ourselves, were a very good team.
The boys played hard and thats what
led to a consistent effort through the
whole game.
I think tonight everybody played to
their role and played to their strengths

and when we do that, were a tough

team to beat, said Blumes.
Kings goaltender Bryce Halverson
has been a stalwart in the crease all
year long and got praise from his coach
for a well-earned shutout.
Bryce played very well, hes big and
was calm in the net. I thought there
wasnt a lot of wasted movement and
I thought his slides were controlled,
said Blumes. I thought we played well
in front of him, our defence were physical, they boxed out and tied up sticks
in front.
He also added that the defence were
being versatile and moving the puck
well.
I also thought our defencemen did a
good job of making that good first pass
and there were other times where that
pass wasnt available, but we got some
mobile defencemen that can skated it
out of trouble, said Blumes.
Jarred Burnet, Matt Thomson, Graham Watkins and Lucas Jones scored in
the win.
The Kings will open the playoffs on

necessary, will be the following day in
Medicine Hat.
Both teams split the season series
with two wins apiece, but Blumes
knows it will be a hard-fought series.
I think its not as much about Medicine Hat as what we as the Kings are
going to do. If were going stay focused
and play with a purpose, I like our
chances, said Blumes.
We have scoring and toughness
throughout the line-up, weve got guys
that can skate. I think all the ingredients are there, its just a matter of putting them together.
Medicine Hat was one of the hottest
teams down the stretch and the Kings
will need to be aware on the ice at all
times if they are to have a shot.
They won 11 of their last 14 games,
theyve been playing well and theyre
a worthy opponent, said Blumes. By
late Sunday night a winner will be determined.

The Strathmore Silver Sharks Swim
Club competed in the Alberta Open 1
Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 in Edmonton. Eight athletes from Strathmore qualified and six
were able to attend the meet, which is
for senior level swimmers girls ages 15
and over, and boys aged 16 and older.
Each athlete had to qualify in at least
one event to attend the meet and have
made some amazing improvements in
their performances, said head coach Jen
Mertz.
One of my goals for this meet was for
each athlete to make finals in at least one
event, and all of the athletes succeeded.
Finals are a very exciting accomplishment, you must finish in the top 30 for

the event, if you

do you get an opportunity to race a
second time that
day. I am very
proud of everyone and how they
swam.
The next meets
the Silver Sharks
are attending are
the NCSA meet
in Airdrie and a
junior meet in
Calgary. In total
Strathmore
will
have approximately 50 athletes racing.
This is a very
exciting time and
one last opportunity to qualify
for the upcoming
Provincial and National level meets,
said Mertz.
So far Marina
Laycraft is the only
athlete to qualify
for Western Canadian
Championships, but we
have more athletes
that are so close
and are hopeful
we can add a few
more to the roster
of attendees.
The
Western
Canadian Championships will be
held in Edmonton
on the weekend
of Feb 19-22. Following that meet
are the Age Group
Trials. Eight athletes qualified for
that event, Kennedy

Shelby
Laycock,
Madison Laycraft,
Rayanne Laycock,
Ben Mertz, Megan

Martina

Age Group Championships will be
held the first weekend in March, and
so far one athlete,
Boris Kuljanin, has
qualified.

U10 Ringette

The Strathmore Ice Bullets, U10 Step 2, traveled to St. Albert this weekend to brave the ice and snow and play in the
annual Frozen Ring Outdoor Tournament. The girls played
their first game on Friday at noon in -28 degree temperatures! None of this mattered to those tough girls, as they
triumphed over Red Deer Maroons. Saturday brought slightly warmer weather for the next two games and the shootout. The Ice Bullets tied up their first one against St. Albert
Fire Rings and won 10-6 against the St. Albert Huskies. The
shoot-out, bonfires and free hot chocolate kept everyone going. On Sunday afternoon the team took on the undefeated
Red Deer Roar, fought hard, but lost to some amazing opponents. Were so proud of how well they all played together,
supported one another and carried on! Way to go Ice Bullets!
Congratulations on your first silver medal! What a wonderful
experience for all!

Chiefs clinch first; Braves and Warriors gain ground

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The Wheatland Chiefs added two more victories
to the win column, but not without their opponents
making them earn it.
The local double-A midget team got all they
could handle from the Airdrie Lightning but came
out on top with a 5-2 win on Feb. 6 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
On Saturday, it was
the most tightly contested game the Chiefs
had played in as they
edged the top-ranked
Calgary CRAA Blue 1-0
on home ice.
Tonight (vs. the
Blue), we were doing
the little things like dumping and chasing which
is when you play these good teams with a lot of
speed, you just want to beat them in the battles,
said assistant coach Shadoe Stoodley.
He gave Chiefs goaltender Nolan Kent a lot of
credit for being solid in the crease and for the timely saves.
These guys are the top team in Calgary and
were top in the south here but our goalie stood
on his head. He was unbelievable ... cant ask for a
better game out of a guy, said Stoodley.
In the second period, I didnt count how many
blocked shots, but on their power plays, everybody
was getting down and blocking the shots in front
of the goalie.
Jayse Wilson scored the lone marker early in the
first.
Stoodley felt that in the game versus Airdrie they
got into some bad habits early and were fortunate
to recover from them.
We got into some penalty trouble and a lot of
stuff after the whistle which we dont want to see.
We sat them down after the second and told them
to stay calm and once we did that in the third period, I thought we took it to them, said Stoodley.
Wilson, Alec Biletsky, Quinton Peplinski, Kaleb
Robinson and Jayden Smith scored against the
Lightning.
The Chiefs had a bye in the first round of provincial play downs but played their first game on Feb.
4 and won 6-1, and with a win on Feb. 10 will be
making a trip to the tournament.
They will conclude the regular season will a
pair of home games, on Feb. 13 vs the Cranbrook
Knights (7:30 p.m.) and Feb. 15 against the Red
Deer Elks (1 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.
BRAVES GAIN A SHARE OF FIRST
The Wheatland Braves played their toughest
game of the year against the first place Olds Grizzlys. They prevailed with a 3-1 home ice victory and
as a result will have a
share of top spot.
I thought our penalty killing was pretty
good. I think weve
established our depth
at centre and seen
tremendous improve-

ment on our backend as far as playing the oncoming rush and general defending, said head coach
Keith Klemmensen.
He admits the players could have been a little
more aware of off the opening drop of the puck.
Im not sure if our players were ready to go,
some of them were. I think a lot of them were nervous, some of them showed that they were content
to do the work for a little while, said Klemmensen.
That other team was a very well coached team
with three lines that work hard all the time, a defense thats hard to play against and they can beat
us on any given day.
Kyle Bray scored two, while Nolan Bailey sniped
one in the win.
The Braves were able to shut out the Sylvan
Lake Lakers 6-0 in Hussar on Feb. 6 Klemmensen
thought they let them hang in the game too long.
I thought we let that team hang around a little
bit but Sylvan Lake is a good team and they can do
more than people give them credit for, said Klemmensen.
Kyle Crnkovic had four goals, while Bray and
Tegan Skehar scored one a piece in the win.
The local double-A peewee team swept their
opening round provincial play downs against Airdrie with a 6-0 victory at home and a 6-2 win on the
road. They will begin Round 2 against Bow Valley
next week.
Next up will be two road games in Cochrane on
Feb. 13 against Bow Valley (7 p.m.) and Feb. 15 in
Medicine Hat (11:30 a.m.).
WARRIORS BATTLING FOR WINS
The Wheatland Warriors battled against the Airdrie Lightning and won 4-2 on Feb. 8 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
I was happy with the boys in the game against
Airdrie. I thought especially in the second
period, was about
as good 20 minutes
as weve thrown together in a long time,
said head coach Cody
Brown.
The whole game in general was pretty good. We
were controlling the play in their end for a bulk
of the game so that was good to see that we were
moving the puck well.
Hassan Akl, Chase Clayton, Jayden Hendricks
and Majid Kaddourra scored for the Warriors in the
win.
The local double-A bantam team got a 6-2 road
win in Red Deer on Saturday afternoon and Brown
was happy with the offensive production.
It was not a bad game against a weaker opponent, regardless we found the back of the net six
times so it was good to see, said Brown.
Tyler Cardamore led the way with two, while
Akl, Hendricks, Jase Westgard and Tanner Boutin
supplied singles.
The Warriors will play three games in three nights
this weekend including one more home game on
Feb. 14 (4:45 p.m.) against Red Deer.
They were able to get past Brooks in the first
round of the provincial play downs and will play
Bow Valley in Round two.

Did You Know?
The romantic festival of Valentines Day is said to have originated in pagan
times in Rome when people celebrated annual fertility festival called

the mating of young boys and girls for a year through a lottery system.
Quite often the couple would fall in love and marry.

The Strathmore High School girls

get revenge against the Holy Trinity

The win was extra sweet considering

Despite the loss in January the girls
were not going to be defeated again,

to play and we cant just assume were
going to win, said Spartan head coach

we decided, lets take it to them.
Galandy has been impressed this
far with how healthy the line-up has
been.
I have been impressed with that we
havent had as many injuries as we did
last year and I think we might have
a girl that broke her finger this game,
thatll put us in a little bit of a hole,
said Galandy.
This is the second half that starts

breaks us.
The girls had two home games left
and hope to jump up in the rankings
again before the season is complete.

ZACHARIASSEN,
Richard Donald

January 15, 1958, Calgary, AB

February 8, 2015, Rosebud, AB
Richard Donald Zachariassen, beloved husband of
Helen Zachariassen, passed away suddenly at the
family farm near Rosebud. Richard (Rick) was born
in Calgary, the third of five children of Raymond and
Phyllis Zachariassen. Growing up on the farm was a
joy for Rick - everything was interesting and exciting, especially if an engine was attached. Rick often
helped his Dad and Herman Hansen, the familys hired
man; asking questions, taking machinery apart and
learning how to put it back together. Ricks formal
learning started in Grade one at Severn Creek School
in Rosebud. When the Rosebud school closed, Rick
continued his education at the school in Standard. After graduating from High School, Rick worked in Calgary for a period but the farm life drew him back. Rick
took the Farm and Ranch Management course at Olds
College and, after graduation, moved back to Rosebud to farm with his Mom and Dad. Rick and Helen
were married July 7, 1995 and moved into the house
they designed and built together. Farming, of course,
is not a nine to five job. Despite the long, busy days
of working on the farm, Rick found time for fun. Fun
for Rick was building new equipment, retro-fitting old
equipment, and anything that involved sawing, drilling, welding, nailing, cutting and soldering. Rick made
time for important community commitments: Rosebud
seed plant, the Hall board, and the Lions Club. He was
also one of the few who contributed over one hundred
donations to Canadian Blood Services. Very important
to Rick was his dedication to the volunteer fire departments in both Rockyford and Rosebud. Rick trained
hard and worked hard. Everyone will agree that his
commitment was an integral part of the new fire hall
in Rosebud. Ricks death has devastated his family,
friends, neighbors and colleagues. Mourning his death
and treasuring his memory are his wife Helen, his
siblings Donna, Roy (Karen), Judy (John), Linda (Andy)
and Helens family. Rick also leaves behind his beloved uncle and aunt, Wayne & Iris Dresser, of Carbon;
his cousins and their children and grandchildren. Rick
leaves to mourn his cherished nieces and nephews:
Kayla and Courtney Zachariassen and their mother
Laurie Zorniak; Matt McKee; Liam, Sara and Daniel
Wong. A service to honour Rick and his love for his
family, friends and community will be held on Monday,
February 16, 2015 at the Rosebud Church at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a donation can
be made directly to the Rosebud Fire Association (P.O.
Box 602, Rosebud, AB T0J 2T0). To send condolences,
please visit Ricks obituary at www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.
