There were plenty of options for great meals, activities and music in town
during the Strathmore Stampede weekend. Businesses took time out of
their busy schedules to host the various events around the community. The
Strathmore & District Agricultural Society kicked off the festivities with their
Appreciation Dinner on July 30. Gregory, Harriman and Associates, Byron
Smith Ford, the Chinook Credit Union, Strathmores Calgary Co-op, the Legion and UFA also got in the festive spirit by providing food and entertainment over the weekend.

Men with erection problems are best advised to

Massive polio vaccination projects in India have
resulted in no new cases of polio in the past three
years. Through the efforts of the UN, The Bill and
Amanda Gates Foundation, Rotary clubs around
the world and others, have helped achieved that
marvellous goal. In neighbouring Pakistan, there is
much resistance to the vaccine and the polio is still
infecting disabling many children in that country.

Another Strathmore Stampede has come and gone,
leaving behind memories
and a tired but happy crew
of people who helped organize the events.
I think it was actually one
of our better years and that
is because of the weather,
our director, our staff, our
volunteers, our sponsors
and donors and spectators, I
think it was one of our best
years and I think we owe it
to that group for making it
such a successful year, said
Brad Walls, Acting President for the Strathmore and
District Agricultural Society
about the weekend.
I think it was great. I
think it was actually a huge
success, were quite happy
with the way everything
played out, said Tracey Foster, general manager for the
Ag Society.
A last-minute cancellation
forced the Ag Society and
the board to scramble to find
something to fill the space
on the grounds and provide

options for the people other than watching the rodeo

and the chuckwagons, and
thus Cobbs Carnival of Fun
was added.
Our team came through
and put together I think a
very good package in a very
short time. I know that the
team has got some other
ideas in making that an even
bigger and better event. I
know the group that was
involved has got some really cool ideas and next year
I think its going to be 500
times better, said Walls.
Foster also agreed that
things came together nicely,
and said the Ag Society will
be exploring the possibility of bringing Cobbs back
again next year.
For now organizers are
taking a much-needed moment to breathe before
launching into the planning of the 2015 Strathmore
Stampede.
Weve got some ideas on
what worked well and what
didnt, so well definitely
be looking at what we can
do better and such for next
year, said Foster.

ficially launched the Strathmore Selfie Contest.

We just wanted to come
up with something to incorporate that and keeping
our town clean and we just
asked that people follow the
Town of Strathmore Instagram and then take a picture
of themselves helping out in
some way in the community,
or contributing in the community, said Jennifer Cuthbertson, administrative assistant for the town.
So how it works, head
out and take a selfie of you
helping keep the community clean, follow the Town
of Strathmore on Instagram
@townofstrathmore. Upload

your selfie, tell people what

you were doing, and use the
hashtag
#keepstrathmoreclean, thats it.
Any selfie photos showing
community pride will be entered into a draw for a prize,
which will be determined at
a later date.
It was just an initiative for
people to get involved in the
community, said Cuthbertson.
Ideas for a picture could
be a photo of you picking up
garbage, or doing something
to clean up in a park or public place. The contest ends
on Sept. 1, and in the meantime there will be plenty of
chances to win.

Hookah-smoking is the practice of smoking by

drawing the smoke through water before inhaling.
It sounds like it should be a safer alternative to
smoking cigarettes but it is not. Even after passing
through water, the smoke still contains high levels
of toxic agents than could cause bladder, lung and
oral cancers.
Some medications can slow down our intestinal
tract and we could experience some constipation.
One easy, natural way to counteract this problem
is to eat a few dried apricots. Four or five per day
should help. Be careful not to overdose because it
could cause the reverse problem.

Support continues
for Youth Club
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Youth Club of Strathmore has created a new
funding partnership with the
Town of Strathmore, which
will help the non-profit club
continue to deliver the same
great programming for youth
in the area.
Thanks to the Town of
Strathmore, Wheatland County, business and community
sponsors, and our incredible
volunteers, our club can continue to focus on providing
affordable, quality programming that meets the needs
of the kids and families in
Strathmore and surrounding
communities, said Shannon
Zieman, Program Director
with the Youth Club of Strathmore in a press release.
The club has also received
funding support from Wheatland County Family and Community Support Services, the
United Way, and the Brett
Wilson Foundation. Additional funds have been raised
through volunteer driven fundraising and through other
local business and organizations.
The Youth Club offers programming in outlying communities like Carseland, Ly-

alta, Hussar, Standard and

Rockyford. Right now lack of
transportation is one of the
biggest issues facing the club
because it limits access to the
program for the kids, and
also prevents the club from
expanding to other regional
communities.
This fall the Youth Club
is planning to host an event
with Albertas Promise. The
event is to help raise awareness of local community
needs for the youth, including transportation, and the
date it to be determined.
Albertas Promise is a provincial initiative that champions investment into the five
key areas of a childs success,
including Child and Youth
Friendly Communities. They
work with partners to highlight local needs and recognize organizations who are
doing great things for kids.
Our business, non-profit
and community partners are
committed to keeping the
five Albertas Promise commitments to children and
youth in our province, said
Judy Eng-Hum, Executive Director of Albertas Promise in
a press release.
I want to thank all volunteers, parents and staff at

for continuing to serve the

needs of the communitys
young people, and to great
partners like the Town of

for helping to make these
programs possible.
The Youth Club, the Town
of Strathmore and Wheatland County have all recently become partners with
Albertas Promise, joining
hundreds of other partner
organizations who all have
the same goal of making Alberta the best place in the
world to raise our children
and youth.

Armand Pinel is riding in his fourth Ride to Conquer Cancer ride this weekend, Aug. 9-10. Pinel began the ride as
an honour to his father Armand Sr.s struggles with Multiple
Myeloma, and now rides in his memory.

Riding to conquer cancer

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

For participants of the Ride to Conquer Cancer,
the ride impacts everyone in a different way. Some
are riding as survivors, some for recently diagnosed
loved ones, and others as a tribute to someone lost
to the battle.
Armand Pinels father fought for 14 years, having
lost his battle this past January. The senior Pinel,
who had been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma,
was given two second chances thanks to stem call
transplants that bought him approximately nine
years cancer free.
When we found out about my dads diagnosis,
there were stages we all went through. Shock, disbelief, anger and fear are some of the reactions and
emotions we experienced, said Pinel.
I think it happens to us all in that we always
hear of something awful happening to someone
else, whether it is an accident or a serious health
condition, and we know that something could happen to us or someone close to us but we kind of
ignore it and get used to the status quo.
Then something like this happens and we think,
these things only happen to other people, not to
us. Our fragile protective bubble we put ourselves
in bursts. We started to worry about how our dad
was doing emotionally and physically, how his
health would hold up during treatment, if he was
in pain at all and feared losing him and not having
him in our lives anymore.
Pinel said they had always been a close family,
but the diagnosis brought the family even closer
together. His dad was quiet with his thoughts and
feelings about his cancer and how he felt physically, not wanting the focus to be on his illness but
instead to be on the present and the time together.
It was in 2010 when Pinel first heard about the
Ride to Conquer Cancer when he saw a pamphlet
at ATB. Not being one to exercise much, and barely
ever riding bikes at the time he was a little ap-

prehensive at the thought of raising $2,500, and

riding just over 200km in two days, but when he
questioned if he could do it, he thought of his dads
struggle and knew there was no reason he couldnt.
What struck me the most was the symbolism I
saw between the ride and many peoples journey
when dealing with cancer, said Pinel.
The ride is a huge challenge in terms of fundraising, the training to prepare for riding over
200km, the fatigue and muscle pain that starts
to seep in during the ride, dealing with adverse
weather conditions such as rain and high winds,
seeing another hill you have to climb. However, as
much as the ride is a challenge, it is still nothing
compared to what people with cancer face.
Nevertheless, the first year I did this I had many
thoughts of quitting but just kept thinking of my
dad, his great attitude and his will to live. It inspired me to push through. Adversity in life may
seem insurmountable from a distance but its a
matter of taking things one day and one challenge
at a time. That will take what looks to be insurmountable and make it seem possible.
The 2014 ride happens this weekend, Aug. 9-10,
making this Pinels fourth time in the event. Since
the first year he has grown to love cycling and being a part of the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
Its something that I definitely dont want to
stop doing, but whether Ill do it every single year
for the rest of my life, probably not, said Pinel.
It can be tough asking the same people each
year to commit funds to help him participate in
the event and he has thought of maybe taking a
year break.
Its thanks to research that Pinels father was able
to continue on for 14 years after the initial diagnosis. He was able to witness grandchildren, and
even great grandchildren being born, he was able
to take part in weddings and had many opportunities that would have been missed had the research
and funding not been there to help him have a
chance to survive.

Bringing common sense to firearms licensing

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

Law abiding and responsible firearms owners and users in our riding are welcoming Public
Safety Minister Steven Blaneys changes to Canadas gun-control regulations. I am pleased that
our Conservative government continues to work
to inject some common sense into Canadas gun
laws. I am looking forward to the debates in the
House of Commons this fall, when we introduce
the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act.
As your Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, I
can report to you that more constituents have contacted me with concerns about the treatment of
firearms owners and users than virtually any other
single national political issue over the course of
my tenure.
There are millions of Canadians across our
country who share our concerns. We have always
opposed the high administrative costs and the
large amount of red tape associated with purchasing and possessing a firearm.
Of course, the worst assault of all was the infamous long gun registry that was foisted on us by
the Chretien Liberal government in the mid-1990s.
For years, we had to deal with high costs (per
firearm) and the convoluted bureaucratic processes for acquiring firearms, transporting them, and

even purchasing ammunition. The Liberal Party

is really good at dividing Canadians and pitting
them against each other. With their long-gun registry, the Liberals were pandering to urban Canadians at the expense of rural Canadians and those
living in Canadas remote areas (not to mention
outdoor enthusiasts).
After winning a majority government in 2011,
we delivered on our promise and scrapped the
long-gun registry. I was the Chair of the House of
Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety
and National Security and presided over the meetings that were held to hear witnesses and expert
testimony over Bill C-19, the Eliminating the Longgun Registry Act. There was overwhelmingly evidence in support of scrapping the failed and costly registry. It was perpetually out of date, fraught
with errors and inaccuracies and was unreliable
to front-line police officers. The Liberals registry
had already cost far in excess of a billion dollars
(some calculated over $2 billion). Common sense
during the years of the Liberals long-gun registry
was calling for these taxpayer funds to be spent
instead on combatting the violent gun crime in
Canadas big cities.
Our government is once again acknowledging
and respecting the public safety concerns of Canadians both urban and rural. For example, we will
work to reduce the amount of regulatory bureau-

cracy while preserving public safety by merging the Possession Only License (POL) and the Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) and requiring mandatory firearms safety
courses for first-time gun owners.
Our Government believes that gun control should target
criminals, not law-abiding citizens. We believe that our government should work to promote safe streets and communities, not penalize the lawful activities of hunters and rural
Canadians.

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
If youve read past columns, then you know that one
of my biggest life mistakes happened on June 30,
1997. That evening my daughter Breanne and I had
gone to Sobeys for groceries. My dad had called from
Canmore and talked with Deb and Brennen. When I
returned, Deb told me about the call and suggested I
call back dad.
Nah, Ill call him back in the morning, was my response.
There was to be no call back, as the next morning my
dad died of a heart attack while loading his truck and
boat for fishing. I had wasted my last chance to talk
to my dad. Id never get that chance again, to tell him
how much I loved him, how he was a good father
those chances were now lost.
Days later, while tidying his place, I played his old
answering machine. I had to sit down when I heard
his voice, and in a dazed, crying state played the
greeting over and over just to hear him again.
Its 17 years later, and I still feel guilty of being for
not calling him when I had the chance. Deb and I just
celebrated our 29th anniversary, and weve been reminiscing of those years, and our lost loved ones.
For the past two years, Ive wondered if the minister
who married us was still alive. We got married in Canmores United Church. The new minister had just arrived, and our wedding was to be his first official duty.
His name was Bruce, and he seemed to be a very compassionate man. He counseled us on marriage, and
then we told him the horrible news that my mother
had terminal cancer, and had only weeks to live. In
fact, she was told this news on her own wedding anniversary, which was three days before our wedding!
This new minister, who barely knew us, and had never
met my mother, visited her a few times in the hospital!
He wanted to comfort her, to ease her fear, and to offer his blessings.
Needless to say, our whole family was a mess. Our
happy wedding preparations were clouded by my
moms impending death. Then, this new minister also
realized I was struggling, and took evenings to counsel me with my confusion, anger, and grief. He helped
this young couple out in so many ways, in such a short

time. He gave me hope that my mom, who had suffered in agony, was going to find salvation, and eternal
peace. Our new reverend gave so much of himself that
summer of our wedding, and we never forgot him.
So, this week, I decided to find him. We werent even
sure he was still alive, because he was in his late 50s,
29 years ago. Im definitely not a private eye, but I
googled the United Church of Canada website, and
found a list of all its ministers alphabetically, their
postings, and if they had died. When I found his name,
I hesitated I was afraid to see the word deceased.
It was not there! It showed that he was retired and
that his last ministry was in Comox/Nanaimo. I cant
explain how or why this search was so easy, because
there in the Internet White Pages, was his name, and
that he lived in Parksville!
After several rings, a voice came on in an answering
message. It was the same voice! It was a little rougher
and tired, but when he finished with God bless you,
I knew it was him! I l stated who I was, my reason for
calling, and left my number.
Only two hours later, he called back! He was bit hesitant, wondering how I had found him, and I did have
to refresh his memory. After that, we had a great conversation, and I told him we had stayed married, told
him of my kids, and my gratitude for what he had
done.
In the background, his wife kept saying she couldnt
believe someone would do this, and that I had made
Bruces year!
Year?!?!? He had helped my life!
Rev. Bruce downplayed what he had done, but I told
him that he had helped a young couple get married,
but had eased my moms terror, and my anger and
grief. He ended by graciously offering us a place to
stay if we were out ever out there. I thanked him, and
said, I have no powers or special gifts, but I just want
to say God bless you, Bruce, for all you did for us.
His voiced cracked a little, and he thanked me.
I think about the call I should have made to my dad,
and this one I did make to Rev. Bruce. I got a chance
to thank someone deserving, but there are more calls
to make. I have one last maternal uncle living in Calgary. I think Ill call him again, and set up a visit to his
family theres no time like the present.

immigrated to Montreal in 1820. Seven

Her fathers family (Ramsay) came
from Ayrshire, Scotland and also moved
to Montreal with their seven children all
born in Scotland, arriving in 1912, before moving on to Edmonton.
Rene was born in Edmonton in 1931,
the eldest of a family of four, having

old, she went to live with an aunt and

Rene Betts

basketball team in the 1930s and 1940s.

They won all the cups, and in doing so
only lost seven out of about 700 games!
They were very proud of their school,
especially after Mr Page became the
Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. In 1949
while in Grade 11, Rene played on her
high school team, when they won the
city championship by going undefeated.
This was also the last year before the
merger. Her early memories of school
life were of the many outdoor games she
and her friends played, like
marbles (she was very good
at this game), ring toss, kick
the can, red light, baseball
and alli i over, which
involved tossing a ball over
the roof to the team on
the other side. If someone
caught the ball, then that
person could run around the
end of the building and tag
a member of the opposing
team, and that person would
then be eliminated from the
game! She was very competitive academically, and in sports. She
remembers that homework and chores
came before play. They used to play
outdoors until the street lights came on,
then would move indoors.
She bought a second-hand bike when
she was in Grade 8, and paid for half of
it with the money she had earned babysitting at 10 cents an hour!
A lot of her social activities while she
was growing up involved the church.
She started Sunday School at First Presbyterian Church at age five, and remembers the whole family walking the eight
blocks each way, rain or shine, to Central United Church because they didnt
have a car.
She became a member of this church
at age 13 and sang in both the junior
and senior choirs, attended CGIT, Sunday School, and participated in activities
with the Young Peoples group, who had
Friday night dances, a Saturday bowling
league, a square dance club, and ice
skating. Rene loved skating and competitive sports. She says they were a proud
Canadian family, and always displayed
a large Union Jack flag across the front
of their house on Victoria Day and Dominion Day. In the 1940s and 1950s
children were more self-reliant, and it
was safer for them to go out on their
own. She attended Saturday afternoon
matinees on her own with friends, to see
such epics as Tarzan and Gene Autry. In
those days, it cost 5 cents each way on
the streetcar for children, 5 cents for a

candy bar, and 10 cents for the movie.

Where can one do this today for 25
cents?
She remembers ice cream was delivered to the door, 5 cents a scoop,
dropped into a large bowl! In some
areas bread, milk and vegetables were
also delivered to the house.
Rene was married in 1956, and lived
in England for seven months before
moving back to Canada. They had two
sons and a daughter, and she now has
three grand-daughters. She
worked for the Gas Company in Edmonton for 8.5 years
from 1950-1959. She moved
to Calgary with her husband
in 1962, where they built
a new house near the new
University of Calgary. She remembers that in later years,
McMahon Stadium was built
there. She attended St Davids United Church, and her
children took Sunday School
there. She worked 8.5 years
for Alta Gas Trunk Line,
which later became Nova, then 8.5 years
for Environment Canada in the Harry
Hays Building, before retiring in 1998.
Renes faith helped her through challenging years with her three teenagers,
and following her divorce after 31 years
of marriage. In 1982, she transferred her
church membership to Renfrew United,
where she met two ladies who were
going to have a big input on her life Barbara Davison and Wanda Hartall,
who are now both long time members
of Strathmore United Church. It was
at Renfrew United that Rene became a
member of the United Church Women
(UCW), a relationship she continues to
this day.
She says she enjoys the camaraderie of working with many women on
church projects, socials, fundraisers,
etc. She has served as Unit Leader many
times. She became involved in the Calgary Presbyterial Outreach program and
in 1987/88 served as Co-President with
Darlene Sharman. These two ladies introduced Adopt an Agency throughout
Calgary Presbyterial, so that all agencies
of outreach would be covered. This way
one got to know what they were about,
and what their needs were, and, how
the church could assist through UCW.
She moved to Strathmore Christmas
2008, to be near her only daughter, sonin-law and two granddaughters. She
joined The Happy Gang, transferred her
church membership to Strathmore United, and has made many friends here.

4 now seek Conservative Party nomination

MICKEY DUMONT
Times Contributor

The race to elect a Conservative Party candidate
in the newly formed Bow River riding for the expected 2015 federal election is becoming very interesting.
Up until last week only Brooks Mayor Martin
Shields had declared his intent to run for the conservative nomination.
I heard Rob Anders (Calgary West MP since
1997) was going to take a run in Bow River and I
dont think a lot of people here want him as their
representative, Shields said in announcing his intention to seek the nomination in the riding.
And thats exactly what happened. On July 30,
Anders announced his intention to seek the nomination in Bow River in an interview with the National Post.
It was long rumoured Anders was selling memberships in the riding, but repeated e-mails and
messages to him asking if he is seeking nomination in Bow River were not returned.
Anders became politically homeless in April after losing the Tory nomination in the riding of Calgary Signal Hill to Ron Liepert, a former Alberta
Progressive Conservative cabinet minister. He has
been a centre of controversy for a number of inflammatory comments and for falling asleep during a veterans affairs committee meeting. Anders
says he now is living in Chestermere.
Unlike Anders, Rolly Ashdown, former Reeve of
Rocky View County and current Division 4
Councillor made his announcement in the rid-

ing. He announced his intent to seek the conservative nomination on July 31.
I am looking forward to meeting all of the residents in the newly formed riding of Bow River.
My goal is to be out there listening and finding
solutions for residents concerns. I want to hear
about families, employment, agriculture, commerce, I want to genuinely connect with people
within their communities. said Ashdown. I have
conservative values and believe strongly in the
Conservative Party of Canada and would be honoured to be selected as the candidate to advocate
on issues and promote opportunities for the Bow
River riding, he said in a press release.
Ashdown was the Electoral District Association
(EDA) president and stepped down on July 26. He
lives in Langdon.
Also from Langdon, Gerard Lucyshyn, a Mount
Royal University professor, declared his intent to
seek the riding nomination in Chestermere on
July 26.
Lucyshyn and Ashdown are already political
competitors. Lucyshyn lost to Ashdown in Rocky
View County during the last municipal elections.
Shields is already campaigning to win the nomination. The three-time Mayor of Brooks and career educator considers himself to be a consensus
builder.
It is anticipated the Bow River Conservative Party of Canada EDA will officially run its nomination
this fall. Anyone interested in voting in the nomination selection must have a part membership in
good standing for at least 21 days. Memberships
can be purchased on-line.

Pay freeze lifted

JASON HALE, MLA
Strathmore - Brooks

Seventeen months ago - on Feb. 19, 2013 Finance Minister Doug Horner announced a threeyear salary freeze for public sector managers. He
called it quote leading by example - and said it
was a symbolic move on the governments behalf
to get their spending under control.
Since then, this government has been overwhelmed by a never ending list of entitlement
scandals afflicting politicians and top-level officials across government. If ever there was a time
for this government to demonstrate to Albertans
they respect taxpayers, this would have been it.
Last week, through an Order-in-Council, the PCs
approved a salary hike for the highest-level government managers, many of whom are political
appointees. These include Deputy Ministers, Officials in the Public Affairs Bureau and all of Albertas foreign representatives- including Gary Mar.

As you will recall, Mar is already Albertas highest

paid government employee with total compensation last year of a staggering $560,000.
Adding insult to injury, the PCs have not only
broken another promise, this time they tried to
sneak it by Albertans. With many Alberta families now enjoying summer vacation with friends
and family, the masterminds in the PC leadership
hoped to get away with giving senior appointees
and insiders a big raise without anyone noticing.
This is the culture of entitlement that the Wildrose Caucus will continue to fight against as the
Official Opposition.
We need a government that puts the needs of
Albertans and Frontline workers first, not a government that is focused on assisting insiders and
senior officials.
Albertans can be assured the only way to fix it,
is with a new Wildrose government.

WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE?

One of the biggest fears people have is that they will live a
meaningless life.
Finding ones purpose and
fulfilling it is the deepest
yearning of the human heart,
even more compelling than
fame or fortune.
According to the book of
Matthew 22 in the Bible, many
come to know their calling
but few fulfill them. Many are
called to do great things, but
they dont fulfill them because
they dont give themselves to
the little things.
Martin Luther King Jr. once
said, if a man discovers that
he is called to be a street
sweeper, he should seek to
sweep streets like Michelangelo painted pictures, like
Beethoven composed music
and like Shakespeare wrote
poetry. He should sweep the
streets so well that all the
host of heaven and earth will
have to pause and say, Here
lived a great street sweeper
who swept his job well!
In other words, there is no insignificant task. The shortest

route to knowing your purpose

and fulfilling it is to do all that
you are given to do with all of
your heart as unto the Lord.
The world may not take notice
of it, but the Lord will.
I think we have complicated
what our purpose in life is. Its
simply to do our tasks with all
our hearts. The Bible says that
if we are faithful with what
He has given us, then He will
entrust us with more.
If we think about it, some of
the greatest blessing we have
received are the little things
that people have done for us,
when they do it with all their
hearts. That amounts to the
greatest commandments in
the Bible: Love the Lord your
God with all your heart and
then love your neighbor as
yourself.
If we all did our parts with that
kind of heart and passion, we
would find purpose and meaning in our lives no matter how
great or small the task is and
we would have community.

Riding on in memory of Guido

The Ride Dogs Ride poker run was held Aug. 2-3, raising funds for the Calgary Humane Society. Over 300 bikers gathered to remember the poker
runs founder Glen Guido Garland, who was killed while preparing for the
event. On Aug. 3, the day after a successful poker run, event organizers
staged a family day and kids carnival with games, a dunk tank and many
other fun activities. The second annual event was held on a farm just outside
of Carseland.

Marshman family 2 time century farm award recipient

CHERYL MARSHMAN
Submitted

Looking back on old pictures and
learning the history of our family farm
has been a wonderful experience but
I think to myself why in Gods name
would four brothers from Pennsylvania choose to purchase in 1909 the
land we farm today. Their closest

terminal was Crossfield where they

pulled the grain wagons with horses.
There were only two or three farmers
in the area. Our pictures show that the
winter weather was close to what we
experienced this past winter. This is a
beautiful area but come on, it would
have been pretty barren by the standards of even the smallest of towns in
Pennsylvania. But today, I thank God

Vacation Bible Camps attended throughout the summer

MANNY EVERETT
Times Contributor

Many churches throughout the area held or are going to
be holding VBS/VBC [Vacation Bible School/Camp] in the
summer months. Lord of All Lutheran and Strathmore United
churches joined forces in the middle of July to put on their
camp called Wild Wonders. Kids and adults came for a 6:30
p.m. program of crafts, songs and stories. The adults participated in an adult study led by Doug Thurn. Every night they
closed with a campfire in the parking lot with singing and
snacks.
Strathmores Full Gospel Church ran their program during

the last week of July with Wacky Animals as their theme.

They had over 57 kids in attendance for the week-long program.
Individuals in the community of Standard have been holding programs at the local park along the same idea as VBS to
give kids in the community an opportunity to come out and
be together for Kids Program in the Park! every Tuesday
this summer, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Songs, games, Bible stories,
and lots of fun activities.
The nice thing about such camps is that families dont
need to belong to the churches in order to participate; they
are free programming for kids and families to learn Bible
stories in a fun environment.

2nd annual Rosebud Chamber Music Festival

MANNY EVERETT
Times Contributor

Musicians playing in the second annual Rosebud Chamber Music Festival
(RCMF) from July 30 through to Aug. 3
entertained music lovers from Rosebud,
Drumheller and Three Hills.
The RCMF is a grassroots project
committed to bringing world-class musical performances to rural communities in the Canadian Badlands. Their
mission is to showcase international
performers in concerts, education and
outreach programs.
Keith Hamm, a native of Rosebud
says, My favourite part of the RCMF is
the give and take between community
and artist. Sincere thanks goes out to
the people of Rosebud, Drumheller and
Three Hills for embracing this fantastic
medium and welcoming us into this incredible family.
Hamm is a dedicated chamber musi-

cian who was named Principal Violist of

the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, becoming the youngest member of
the ensemble and one of the youngest
principals in North America. He was recently featured on CBC Radio 2 as one
of this years Next artists.
Hamm, along with Arnold Choi, Peter Longworth, Sheila Jaffe and Aaron
Schwebel, played various pieces at
the Rosebud Church, Knox Church in
Drumheller and in the North Auditorium at Prairie Bible College in Three
Hills.
Samuel Deason was featured on
Wednesday, July 30 at Rosebud where
he performed his debut of a composed
piece by the name of Rosebud Variations. Deason created this unique piece
of music, and he challenged himself,
he said, to incorporate the names of
the last ten donors of the keys on the
piano to pay it off in full. Each donor received a composed piece in the

performance he created. The passion

could not only be heard in the piece
of music that Deason created in his
debut of Rosebud Variations but also
clearly came across in his composure
and character as an artist. The last piece
he played was Rhapsodie Espagnole by
Franz Liszt (1811-1886). He received a
standing ovation and graciously came
back to play an encore of his very first
composition as a treat to delight the audience.

Running with success

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Judging by the two sold-out
performances, the Running With
the Bulls is still one of the signature attractions at the Strathmore
Stampede.
The marquee event, which
took place Aug. 2 and 3 prior to
the chuckwagon races, featured
80 runners on both days and
brought forward the events firstever two-time winner.
Strathmores own Eric Hanson,
a.k.a. Giraffe man, grabbed the
judges attention for the second
year in a row and was the winner
on Aug. 3.
Despite breaking a rib the

night before, Hanson was in the

thick of the action and managed
to elude a major injury en route
to the win.
It was a good time, holy
smokes! Well I did not break a
rib today at least - yesterday I got
ran over there pretty good - today I got nice and close and had
a good time, said Hanson.
The feeling of being a champion for a second time in the same
event could not feel any more
fantastic than it did for Hanson
on Sunday.
It feels pretty good. That is
what I was aiming for was to be
the first two-time champion in
Strathmore, said Hanson.
As for earnings he won, prob-

ably have a pretty good night and

try to save some of it maybe.
Strathmores own Logan Weir,
18, was the successful winner of
the event of Aug. 2.
I wanted to do a dive roll (unsuccessfully) out of the bulls way
and I got trampled on, said Weir
of his performance.
Being his first time at the event,
Weirs initial reaction was, I actually thought whoever did it
was an idiot and then my friends
called me up yesterday and said
hey we should go running with
the bulls.
His advice for future event participants was to make sure it is
worth it to get hurt that much to
win the prize money.

Wilson receives prestigious award

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Each year at the Strathmore Stampede
a presentation is made announcing the
recipient of the Keith Schneider Award
of Excellence.
This year no one was more surprised
at the announcement than the actual recipient Judi Wilson.
Wilson has been working in the rodeo
industry for many years, volunteering
her time with the Canadian Pro Rodeo
Hall of Fame until recently, and with the
Strathmore Stampede.
Wilson had been busy for the past
couple of months preparing things for
the recipient of the award this year,
thinking it was someone else receiving
it. Part of the presentation was going to
be a 12-minute video, and at the halfway mark Gwen Schneider, Keiths widow, Pascal Del Guercio, a director of the
Strathmore and District Agricultural Society, the person and their family would
go into the infield.
Wilson said Del Guercio grabbed hold
of her arm and told her to come into the
infield. The announcer Bob Tallman was
talking but she wasnt paying too much
attention because she was focused on
the task at hand, hoping things would
run smoothly with the video, while trying to figure out where the recipient is.
Wilson was getting a little frustrated,
normally she doesnt go into the infield,
but she said Del Guercio told her that
Gwen Schneider, Keiths widow, wanted
a couple of the directors out there.
So rather than fight with him, I go,
said Wilson.
As she is entering the infield she is
running a checklist through her head,
still not really paying attention to whats
being said. She keeps looking at the
screen and no video is starting and
when Del Guercio tells her to relax, she
tells him that Bob Tallman needs to stop
talking so that the video can get started.
Finally Pascal goes, Judi would you
listen, who is he talking about? So Im
listening, and all of a sudden it hits me,
hes talking about me, and I just started
sobbing, said Wilson.
It was so unexpected, it just blew me
away.
There were 76 people who went out
to the infield as a show of support for
Wilson. The whistles and cheers from
the grandstand awed Wilson, who
doesnt do it for the recognition, I do it
because I have a passion to do it.

Gwen Schneider said a few words

about Wilson during the presentation.
Judi is a lady that inspires me to do
better. I have always said that the energizer bunny was created after watching
Judi. I was given the opportunity to be
her sidekick one year at Heritage Days,
all I can say is sit down, hold on and be
ready to work. When she is involved in
something, you never have to question
if it is done, because she just wont quit
until it is finished, said Schneider.
I met Judi while Keith was still Mayor. Keith had mentioned to Judi that he
liked saskatoon berries. Each year Judi
would make Keith saskatoon berry tarts
and bring them to him here. He loved
her for that. Many times I was too late
to get any but as soon as I caught on
to this gift she brought and saw that
she had been around I would run up
immediately to at least get one. I, too,
quickly became friends with this amazing person.
There are always people that go
above and beyond for communities, or
groups, or rodeos ... the list goes on.
Trust me when I say that Keith would
have been so excited to present this
award himself, but today I am privileged and honoured to present the
Keith Schneider Award of Excellence to
Judi Wilson.
Keith Schneider had been mayor of
Strathmore for many years, and was always a strong supporter, volunteer and
ambassador of the rodeo, promoting it
everywhere he went. Schneider lost his
battle to cancer in 2011.
Basically the Keith Schneider award
is given to a recipient that we believe
has put in a lot of effort in the community, and a lot of it with the Ag Society
and the Strathmore Stampede, said Pascal Del Guercio a director of the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society.
When the unfortunate situation happened with Keith we wanted to carry
on his energy and his ambition and his
support and we have tried to basically
find a person who is similar in their personality and work habits and so on that
Keith was.
Shortly after the award was initiated
Del Guercio himself was one of the recipients and he was blindsided by his
committee, so he knows exactly how
Judi felt.
Its the most important award we
give away and to be honoured with it is
huge, a huge recognition to the people
who receive it.

Competitors love new rodeo format

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
Strathmore Stampedes new rodeo
format, first introduced last year, is
making Canadas third largest rodeo a
must-stop on the professional tour.
The new format, which features a
Finals Monday, is quickly becoming a
huge draw for the Strathmore Stampede.
We started with rodeo finals (last
year) and I think that is starting to
catch on, said Brad Walls, president of
the Strathmore & District Agricultural
Society. Next year is only going to get
bigger.
The event has been a very successful. First of all we want to thank our
sponsors, our volunteers and spectator

base for coming out and supporting

us.
The first-time steer rider Coy Robbins will not forget his first trip to the
Strathmore Stampede.
Robbins really felt that he could have
been better, but his 79 points were
good enough for the winning earnings
of $1462.76
It felt alright, I thought I could have
rode a little better, but nothing is better than winning three events in one
rodeo, said Robbins
Robbins was awarded with the Jack
Hartell Memorial Belt Buckle and he
could not have been more honoured.
The time of 3.6 seconds is what got
steer wrestler Dru Melvin a shiny new
belt buckle and an earning of $2,775.25
This is the first time I have entered

here, a really great rodeo and a lot people showed up for the short round. It
was a great experience, said Melvin.
Bull rider Tyler Thomson was able to
sustain control on his bull, Im a Gangsta, long enough to earn him a winning point total of 86.75 and earnings
of $2,800.
(I had) a good bull that had not
been ridden too many times - that was
the second time he has been rode,
said Thomson. I knew I had to have
everything firing on the right cylinders.
It worked out good, he bucked really
hard (which played) into my hands
really strong bull and we got along.
Ladies Barrel racer Rebecca Paradis
showed a strong ride weaving around
the barrels and the results showed with
a time of 17.564 seconds and a prize

403-874-6486

pot of $2,800.
I am so excited. This is the biggest
thing I have ever won in my life, so it is
pretty awesome, said Paradis.
Jake Vold used a 90.25 point ride on
Monday to claim the bareback competition, winning $2,800. Jeremy Buhler and Rhen Richard each collected
$1,400 after winning the team roping
event.
Rylan Geiger used an 88.5 point ride
on Pedro to win the saddle bronc competition, while Clint Robinson needed
8.5 seconds to win the tie-down roping.
Linden Woods claimed the novice
bareback with a 73 point ride, good
enough for $942.26. Keenan Reinhardt
scored an 81 point ride in novice saddle bronc, earning him $928.29.

Hard work pays off!

The Leaping Dog Racing Strathmore
Womens Triathlon will be hosting their
12th annual event on Aug. 17th.
The event is intended for female athletes who are looking to begin triathlon
races in a comfortable atmosphere. The
event still has 80 spots in the triathlon,
28 for the duathlon and 11 for the relay.
Volunteers are desperately needed as
the numbers are low compared to past
years.
While all the participants are competing, there is a charity being fundraised
for called Fast and Female, which
provides the opportunity for girls from
ages nine to 19 to participate in sports.
There is a 500 meter swim, 20 km
bike and a 5 km run, said Deanne Jabs,
race director.
(New this year) is the duathlon
which is a run-bike-run event (that includes) a 5 km run, 20 km bike and a
5 km run.
The volunteers have been slow to
come this year, and with the triathlon
fast approaching, the organizing committee is looking for anyone who is
qualified and the age of 16 and up.

Right now we are at the point of

desperation. We would love to have the
town involvement in the event if they
can, said Jabs. It is a great opportunity to showcase the town and be a part
of the event and experience is not required.
We will allow, if there is space available, online (registration) and they can
sign-up at the Tri It store in Calgary,
said Jabs.
The package pick up is three days
prior to the event.
It is a beginner-friendly race. For 40
per cent of the racers, it is their first
ever athletic experience, said Jabs.
Our youngest (racer) is 17 and our
oldest is 63. The average age is 35.
Jabs added that a lot of the competitors are mothers that set goals and are
able to achieve them through this triathlon without going to the gym.
One cool thing about this race is the
volunteers because we have them on
traffic controls and counting times in
the pool. The volunteers get the appreciation from all the racers, said Jabs.
Jabs is hoping Strathmore will come
out and support the great event.

No. 1 ranked chuckwagon driver Jason Glass, along with his outrider team
of Chad Cosgrave and Dustin Gorst,
claimed the Strathmore Stampede
championship on Aug. 4.
It was a great weekend for us. The
horses were healthy and ran excellent
and I have two great outriders in Chad
Cosgrave and Dustin Gorst, said Glass.
They did a great job.
(The Stampede) was exciting here
because MJs Water Hauling is here and
they just started sponsoring me last
year. It is my second year with them in
Strathmore and it is extra special when
you get a new company behind you.
The success of Glass was attributed
to the horses and wagons he rode.
I did not change anything. I drove
two different outfits off of four separate
barrels, said Glass. The key is having
healthy horses, they are feeling better
than they have all summer.
Glass added that to win these events
you have to be penalty free and run
fast.
On the weekend, the track had great
conditions and the riders could not
have been more satisfied.
The track conditions were great this
weekend it seems to be improving
each year, said Glass. We had really
good weather and the crowd saw some
really nice races.

The Strathmore Lecrosse Club had another successful year with some teams

rolment grows.
Challenges for next season and beyond continue to be securing floor
time. Lacrosse is gaining popularity in
Strathmore, and we have seen tremendous growth, particularly in the last two
years, said Iversen.
Iversen believes that the issue needs
of limited times needs to be addressed
as more players get involved with the
game of lacrosse.
This is a challenge that really needs
to be addressed in order to move forward and to continue to improve the
quality of recreation opportunities in

Strathmore girls win at Summer Games

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore was well represented on the Zone 2 ladies softball championship team at the Alberta Summer Games in
Airdrie July 24-27.
Taryn Tanton, Shaylene Magwood, Ann Sauve, Megan Stefanich, Cassidy Hinz, Brianna Olson, Libby Wheeler and Jordan Mitchell claimed the gold medal after Zone 2 defeated
Zone 7 in the final.
After a successful season with the Strathmore Thunder U16
team, the eight girls earned a spot on the Zone 2 team.
I was really excited, I was really surprised actually, said
Cassidy Hinz. I did not know I was going to make it.
The atmosphere around the event is what many athletes
cherish because the opportunity is there to interact with other athletes and to make lifelong friendships and memories.
It was really unique there and everything was super organized, said Hinz, who also plays ringette and volleyball. The
experience overall being in a big competition (and playing)
with quite a few players from Strathmore was cool.
I was really surprised that I was one of the players that
made it out of all the girls that tried out, said Brianna Olson.
It was really fun to be a part of such a big event.
The best part about being at the games for Olson was being
able to make friends with her new teammates.
Jordon Mitchell found out at the tryouts that she had made
the team and was really excited about making the squad for
the second time
I thought the one this year was really good (compared to)
the one two years ago as there was more hype about it, said
Mitchell.
The experience for Mitchell was one she will never forget,
as hanging out with the other athletes and doing team bonding was exhilarating
As for Megan Stefanich, she really was enthused about the
team assembled for the games.
I was really excited, and confident in the team, said

Taryn Tanton (l-r),

Stefanich The experience was really positive

throughout (the games) because it was really cool
getting to the gold medal game and coming out
with gold was great.
Her favorite part of the games was spending
time with the girls because they were a great team
to be with.
For Libby Wheeler, it was her second go around
at the Summer Games and just the excitement of
the first one made her want to come back.
(The atmosphere) was a lot different this time
because there was only two of us on the team that
have done it twice and we knew what to expect,
said Wheeler.
Wheelers favourite part was probably meeting
a whole new field of girls. My team from the sea-

son was there and getting to play against (opponents) that I have already faced was cool.
Shaylene Magwood was more than delighted
at getting the nod to go to the Alberta Summer
Games.
I was actually super excited because I had
friends who competed in the Winter Games and
they told me about their great experience and
(their excitement) to play on the team, said Magwood. She plays volleyball and badminton.
Taryn Tanton had a great experience at the
games.
Nervous and excited at the same time, and just
being there was amazing, said Tanton.
She also added that being there around all other
athletes was a highlight.

Wheatland Kings
look for hardworking
players at camp
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings Junior B hockey club is gearing
up for a revamping year after
a one-year absence from the
Heritage Junior B Hockey
League.
The season begins with the
pre-main camp from August
12-14 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Head
Coach
Jeremy
Blumes is ecstatic to get
the camp under way and to
see what players he has to
choose from for the upcoming season.
At this time of year a lot
of guys have their sights set
on Junior B or Midget triple
A and with that in mind, we
thought we would have a
camp a couple weeks before
so those players can get ready
for main camp, said Blumes.
The camp is opened up to
players born 1997 or older
and we do have a couple
of 1998s that were by invite
only who were higher profile
kids coming out of bantam
with WHL interest.
Blumes and his staff want
to give players the opportunity to see what kind of
camp the Kings will run and
what the players should expect on the ice.
It gives (the players) an
opportunity to see what

kind of organization we are

and practices we run, said
Blumes. The reverse of that
is we become familiar with
those players who are on the
Kings radar and being invited to the main camp.
Players will be expected
to perform at a high level if
they want the chance to impressing the Kings brass in
hopes of earning a spot on
the team.
(The camp) will be demanding both physically and
mentally. What we planned is
to have the (on-ice sessions)
in the evening and what it
is looking like right now
three teams of 18 skaters and
two goalies, said Blumes.
The program for the on-ice
sessions will consist of two
scrimmages and certain days
where there will be practices; and dry land, which will
run through all three days.
Coaches have different criteria in what is expected of
the players at the camp to
evaluate their options for the
team .
There is five criteria: 1)
skating, 2) skill set, 3) competing, 4) character and 5)
players succeeding, said
Blumes.
Coach Blumes has one
promise to the fans and that
is the players will compete
night in and night out and
will work hard every shift.

55 Games
selling dream
vacations
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Strathmores Alberta 55 Plus Summer
Games committee has a raffle youre
sure to love. The 2015 Dream Vacation
raffle will see up to 12 lucky winners
heading off on vacation with $5,000
travel vouchers.
Theres 12 $5,000 travel vouchers, so
they can go anywhere. All of the prizes
will be drawn on April 21 or sooner,
depending on how tickets go. People
have more than one chance to win. If
their name gets drawn out first, their
name goes back in the draw and it can
be drawn again, said Cave Starling,
Friends of the Games director.
Tickets are selling for $100 each, and
as long as youre over 18, and purchase
the tickets in Alberta, you can have a
shot at winning a vacation.
Years ago in Medicine Hat there was
a trip of the month raffle. Starling remembered that raffle and was hoping
to do something along the same lines
here, the only difference being specified trips cant be sold, which is why
it is trip vouchers. The vouchers are
through Swan Valley Travel Strathmore.
Tickets for the 2015 Dream Vacation
went on sale on July 23, and will be
sold until Apr. 20, 2015 unless they sell
out prior to that date. Tickets can be
purchased at the games office at 233,
3rd Ave; call ahead to ensure someone
will be there at 403-934-1580 (ext: 300).
On Aug. 1 a second fundraising initiative was started, the provincial Hole-InOne Skills Challenge.
So what will happen is people will
go into participating golf clubs throughout Alberta and they enter the skills
challenge for $2 and that makes them
eligible to win 50 per cent of an unlimited Alberta-wide pool, said Starling.
Im an avid golfer and its just a nice,
inexpensive way to create some interest
and if the interest grows, the pot will
grow and people could be playing for
$500, or $1,000 or $1,500 pots.
When the $2 is paid, half will go into
the prize pot and half of it will go to
the Summer Games. The challenge will
run Aug. 1 to Sept. 30 this year and then
hopefully from May 1 to Sept. 30, 2015
said Starling.
There are approximately 20 clubs involved in the challenge so far. Full details on the challenge and a list of the
participating golf courses can be found
by going to 2015strathmoregames.ca.
There is a chance for someone to win
daily, and the winner will get the money from all of the clubs involved. The
challenge will then reset.
The Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games
committee needs to raise a whopping
$1.3 million for the event.
