Woofstock
Animal Orphanage to host
18th annual event. PAGE 5
By BRIGIT BAUMA

The Animal Welfare Associa-
tion of Voorhees was one of 50 an-
imal shelters to compete in the
ASPCA Rachael Ray 100k Chal-
lenge throughout the months of
June, July and August. Over the
three months, the AWA saved 881
dogs and cats.
The challenge was a remark-
able event, and while many of our
staff and volunteers are exhaust-
ed, we are very pleased to have
saved 881 dogs and cats over the
past three months. This is an in-
crease of 95 adoptions compared
to the same three months in
2013, said Maya Richmond, exec-
utive director of the AWA.
The $100K Challenge is a na-
tional competition to inspire ani-
mal shelters, and those who sup-
port them, to go above and be-
yond to increase pet adoption, re-
unite lost pets with their families
and save more animals lives.
Across the country, 50 shelters
were chosen to compete to break
their own records saving the lives
of animals. Each competing shel-
ter was to save more dogs, cats,
puppies and kittens than it did
during the same three months of
the previous year. The shelters
were split into five divisions with
10 shelters in each. AWA was cho-
sen to be a part of division 2.
The adoption challenge is
about how you engage your com-
munity to promote and save more
lives by engaging your communi-
ty and employees to know more
about pet adoption and spread the
word, Richmond said.
For the competition, the AWA
chose a theme it called Once
Upon a Shelter to promote the
idea that it wants families and
pets to all be happy and healthy
with fairytale endings. The staff
decorated the shelter using
princess and prince themes such
as creating castles and dressing
up like royalty.
For adult cats in particular, be-
cause they arent adopted much
during the summer, they used the
words Reigning Cats to help
promote their adoption.
Adult cats sit for a very, very
long time this time of year. We
had to do a little twist to get the
cats out so we used Reigning
Cats. About 300 adult cats were
adopted, which can be very, very
hard. We just wanted to make
sure that the cats find good
homes, Richmond said.
Because it doesnt have much
marketing money, the AWA had to
think of creative ways to spread
the word. It utilized grassroots
marketing, flyers, community
events and social media. It also
asked sponsors and businesses
such as Petco and Petsmart to get
involved.
The shelter held a 12-hour
adopt-a-thon for the first weekend
where the goal was to get 50 ani-
mals adopted, but it surpassed
that. It also targeted specific
towns around the area and tapped
into people it knows in the com-

Its about that time of year
again where pet lovers from all
over can bark for joy: Woofstock
is almost here. Woofstock will be
held once again at John Connolly
Park on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m.
This will be the 18th annual
Woofstock hosted by The Animal
Orphanage in Voorhees.
Woofstock is our biggest
fundraiser of the year. We are a
non-profit and no kill shelter, and
we dont get any funding from the
state. So all our money comes
from donations, the Woofstock in-
cluded, and we take in about 1,500
animals a year, said Christine
Todd, the shelters director.
The big pet festival will host
about 50 to 60 vendors, food,
music, an alumni parade and
more. Families, friends and dogs
are all invited to enjoy the festivi-
ties.
We encourage you to bring
your dog as long as it is leashed,
trained, polite and gets along
with other dogs, Todd said.
Todd promises more vendors,
more rescue groups and hopeful-
ly more people for this years
Woofstock.
Some highlights of the festival
include the K-9 unit, where offi-
cers will do demonstrations for
the kids; County Line Veterinary
Hospitals $25 microchipping; and
an animal communicator, who
will donate proceeds back to the
shelter.
Another highlight, and special
guest, includes Master Chef
Joseph Poon. Known for his culi-
nary skills, Poon has been fea-
tured on television shows such as
The Tonight Show with Jay
Leno and The Ellen DeGeneres
Show. He has been known to

In October 2013, with the cooperation of
our Economic Development Committee,
we were the first municipality in South
Jersey to introduce the Shop Voorhees
Property Tax Reward Program!
This program allows a portion of your
normal purchasing dollars spent on goods
and services in Voorhees to be applied to
your property tax bill, thereby reducing
your taxes at the end of the tax year.
Shop at any participating Shop
Voorhees location. You will know who
they are by the Shop Voorhees logo in their
window or by checking online at
www.propertytaxcard.com or the Voorhees
Township website, www.voorheesnj.com.
When you check out, present your Shop
Voorhees card. The retailer will swipe
your card, and a percentage of your pur-
chase will be ap-
plied to reduce
your property tax
bill. Each business
independently es-
tablishes a percent-
age of your pur-
chase that will be
applied toward
your taxes. It is
that easy.
In less than a
year, 55 Voorhees
businesses and
more than 4,500
residents have
chosen to partici-
pate in the pro-
gram, and the
numbers continue to grow. Sales for the
year are expected to exceed $680,000 leading
to tax credits and rental reimbursements of
more than $42,000 for our residents.
Cards were distributed to residents by
mail last October. If you have not already
done so, register your card to have your
benefits applied. You can register your
card at www.propertytaxcard.com or
www.voorheesnj.com. You will need your
Shop Voorhees card as well as your proper-
ty block and lot number available. This is
how your shopping benefits will be recog-
nized to be credited. If you reside in an
apartment, your address will be the recog-
nizing factor for receiving a check at the
end of the tax year. Everyone can partici-

Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 13
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 13
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost.
Its hard to believe how much our
lives have changed in those 13 years
how heightened security at public
places, especially airports, is expected
and openly accepted; how a persons
privacy is not always private; how
farewell and welcome home celebra-
tions for servicemen and women seem
to be commonplace; and how, sadly, the
world is still dealing with terror.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 13 years
ago.
Here we are, more than a decade
later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of
us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Thirteen years later, we should all
be proud of the way we are remember-
ing and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local commu-
nities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us,
host 9/11 remembrances and memori-
als.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have
done well so far.
We should never forget what hap-
pened 13 years ago. We should always
pause and respect those who were
taken from us and those who fight for
our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 13 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
We will never forget.

HOPE Church, located at 700
Cooper Road in Voorhees, will
launch its seventh year hosting
an outreach program for moms
with children from birth to
kindergarten. Known as M.O.P.S.
(Mothers of Preschoolers), the
program offers a format that is
nurturing, comforting and en-
couraging to mothers who often
experience isolation and loneli-
ness during this critical time of
raising a child.
Guest speakers, refreshments,
craft activities, fun and sistership
are typical features at meetings
where women gain the opportuni-
ty to make new friends in similar
situations in small, intimate
group settings. These small
groups are often led by leaders
who are former M.O.P.S. atten-
dees who have had positive expe-
riences with the organization and
are eager to give back.
An international organization,
M.O.P.S groups have formed in 35
countries around the globe.
There are nearly 4,000 groups
meeting at any given time
throughout the United States on a
weekly basis.
Quality childcare in the
churchs nursery affords mothers
the opportunity to meet for pre-
sentations on timely issues,
which provide moms with some
much-needed respite and nurtur-
ing. The meetings then round out
with mothers sharing together at
tables of small groups where dis-
cussions covering various topics
take place.
M.O.P.S. is a Christian-based
organization that welcomes
mothers wherever they are in
their spiritual journey.
The groups mission statement
is inclusive to all women no mat-
ter what their life or faith situa-
tion.
Whether youre a stay-at-
home mom, married or single,
theres something for everyone,
M.O.P.S. coordinator Heather
Magladry said. It doesnt matter
where you are spiritually, all are
welcome.
The M.O.P.S. group at HOPE
Church meets the first and third
Tuesday of every month, from
9:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning Sept.
23.
Registration is $70 per mom,
per semester and includes all ma-

registration fee to M.O.P.S. Inter-
national is also required.

The Animal Orphanage does not
do one-day adoptions. People in-

We dont do one-day adop-
tions. It is a process. We do dog
meets and vet checks, Todd said.
However, those who were
adopted by families through The
Animal Orphanage previously
are invited to bring their pets
back for the alumni parade. It will
feature the adopted pets and how
they have grown since being
taken to a new home.
For me, the best part of the
event is the alumni parade, Todd
said. You see strays come in, and
then they get adopted, and then
you see them happy and healthy
again with a family.
Admission to Woofstock is $1
and kids under 5 are free.

benefits first responders
First responders pro-
vide a priceless service
to the residents of Cam-
den County. That is why
the Freeholder Board
and Cooper University
Health Care sponsor an
initiative to proactively
keep the 2,800 emer-
gency responders
healthier by identifying
and combating life-threatening diseases.
The statistics are overwhelming and un-
derline a significant need to improve the
health of our men and women on the
front-line of public safety.
Statistics show that cardiac disease is
the number one killer among firefighters
over the age of 35 and that 75 percent of all
active emergency responders nationwide
have been classified as hypertensive or
prehypersensitive. In fact, 44 percent of all
deaths by firefighters, in the line of duty,
are from sudden cardiac deaths. Further-
more, obesity, which can lead to a variety
of chronic diseases, affects 75 percent of
emergency responders and according to
the national trade publication, Fire Engi-
neering, the incidence of obesity among
firefighters surpasses the general popula-
tion.
Every day the men and women who
protect our families and homes put them-
selves at great risk to ensure our safety.
This program presents an opportunity for
us to give back to our firefighters and first
responders by making their overall health
a priority. These men and women work
under extremely stressful conditions, and
this program is the least we can do to help
these heroes.
The genesis for this voluntary program
came from the Camden County Division
of Shared Services and their Fire Equip-
ment Purchasing Advisory Committee
(FEPAC). This board, administered by fire-
fighters and Emergency
Management Service
professionals, identified
that, in accordance with
the National Fire Protec-
tion Association Guide-
lines, first responders
should have a compre-
hensive medical exam
performed annually.
In order to combat
this epidemic, this public-private partner-
ship provides critical medical exams for
our first responders including complete
physicals with laboratory tests, EKG, pul-
monary screening and physical assess-
ment including body mass index by a
physician. These exams are the first step
in creating a global wellness campaign
that will improve the health of our fire-
fighters and emergency medical techni-
cians.
The partnerships goal is to foster a
bond between public and private entities,
ultimately protecting every towns great-
est asset the men and women that are the
first-on-the-scene. This partnership pro-
gram is a perfect fit for Cooper University
Health Care, our regions largest provider
of medical care.
The most recent screenings were pro-
vided by Cooper University Health Care
physicians at the Bloomfield Park Volun-
teer Fire Department in Pennsauken
Township on Sept. 3. I believe this pro-
gram can be a model throughout the state
in addressing a challenge and expense
posed by our men and women in uniform.
At the end of the day, this exam could be
the difference between life and death.

We sent these business cards
for a free adoption to some people
we know in the community. Pret-
ty much saying, we trust you and
what you are doing. With no
adoption fee, they came in, or at
least thought about going. That
was useful, Richmond said. We
wanted to get word of mouth
going in a very positive way.
The winners of the grand prize
and the smaller prizes wont be
chosen until Oct. 7. Unfortunately,
the AWA had a goal to save 1,200
pets over the three months, but it
didnt quite reach that goal so it
wont be winning the grand prize.
It also still qualifies for the small-
er prizes such as the Community
Engagement or Best in Division
awards.
But, for Richmond, this compe-
tition wasnt all about winning
the money. It was about getting
everyone, the staff, volunteers
and community, together to help
save lives.
Sometimes, you get stuck in a
rut, and this challenge pushes
you into more creativity. It helps
give us an opportunity to come up
with great ideas, like greeting
customers in princess costumes,
Richmond said. If people arent
coming through the doors, you
need to change something if you
are interested in saving lives.
The AWA isnt stopping with
just this competition, of course. It
is doing a pirate-themed adoption
in mid-September to kick off the
fall. Then in October, it is going to
do fundraisers that will lead to
holiday adoption events in the
winter.
The Animal Welfare Associa-
tion is a private, nonprofit organi-
zation that operates the oldest
and largest low-cost spay/neuter
clinic, adoption center and no-kill
animal shelter in South Jersey.
Started in 1948, it has been
around for 66 years and the clinic
has been around since 1973.
Through a variety of innovative
programs, it strives to ensure that
animal companionship is accessi-
ble to all and make sure the pets
are safe. In 2013, more than 16,000
pets were served through AWA
programming. For more informa-
tion and list of events, visit its
website at www.awanj.org.
