Vertebrata is the fourth sub-phylum of the chordates. In Invertebrates, the notochord is replaced by
bony structure called the vertebrae, for which the group is named. Vertebrae connect together forming the
spinal column or backbone. The feature common to all vertebrates are as follows:
Internal skeleton of bone and/or cartilage;
Specialized muscle system;
Advanced centralized nervous system with a true brain or spinal cord;
Complex sensory structures;
Dorsal nervous system and a central heart;
Complex integumentary system; and
Paired appendages for locomotion
Five classes of vertebrates exist today. The five classes are based mainly on breathing mechanisms
and means of reproduction.
Hi! Im a Tuna. Im
a FISH. I live only
in water. Im
covered with
scales. I have gills.
I use this for
breathing.
Hi! Im a Lizard. Im
a REPTILE. Im a
primitive vertebrate
adapted for
terrestrial life. My
skin is dry and
covered with
ectodermal scales.
Hi! Im a Frog. Im an
AMPHIBIAN. I live
both in land and in
water. I lay eggs
enclosed in a
gelatinous sheaths. I
live part of my life in
water while Im
young.
