FROM THE PULPIT
“And Everyone Yelled FIRE!”

I read the news today, oh boy. About an unlucky man at home recovering from a lightning strike. He was minding
his own business, inside of his house, and a huge thunderstorm blew through the area. The next thing he knew he was
in the hospital suffering from burns on his head, arms and legs from a lightning strike. I’ll bet his life has changed
forever.

Pentecost is the day we celebrate the birthday of the church. The disciples must have thought that lightning had struck them
dead center. They were gathered in Jerusalem in an upper room. They were there- this sacred crew of scared little men-
behind locked doors. But that did not stop lightning from striking inside. It did not stop the Holy Spirit from rushing in and
changing some lives forever.

“Suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled the whole room where they were sitting.
There appeared to them as if tongues of fire, distributed and resting on each of them. And they were filled with the Holy
Spirit and began to preach in other languages as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2) And Everyone Yelled ‘FIRE!’

So it wasn’t lightning but it was the Holy Spirit, much more powerful than lightning. The scared disciples became confident
preachers and went out and preached and baptized 3,000 people that day. That Holy Spirit is still coming to our churches and
people today in the same powerful way to change lives forever. Are you ready for the change? Have you experienced the
change?

There is a story about a dignified pastor who was visiting an elderly parishioner in the nursing home. She was
confined to a wheelchair. As he stood to leave, the woman asked her pastor to have a prayer with her. He did. He
gently took her hand and prayed for comfort, strength and healing. When he finished the prayer, her face began to
glow. Obviously something miraculous was happening in her heart, and in her body. She said softly, “Pastor, would
you help me to my feet?” He did.

She took a few uncertain steps. Then she began to jump up and down, then to dance and shout and cry with
happiness until the whole nursing home was in an uproar. After she was quieted down, the pastor ran to his car,
jumped in, closed the door, grabbed the steering wheel and prayed, “Lord, don’t ever do that to me again!”

We expect so little out of God. Lightning could strike your church. The rush of the Holy Spirit might whirlwind your life in
another direction. Tongues of spiritual power could rest in our hearts and on our lips and hands. I wonder how many of us are
like the disciples? Go out into the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28). I suspect that far too many of us say, “Lord, don’t do that to me again.”

Pentecost Day is May 23rd and the Pentecost Season is over half the church year. It gives us time to get our response right.
Attend church, listen to the word preached, and then get ready for the Holy Spirit to strike.
