Byzantine Monthly Menaion

Volume Six: February

Metropolitan Cantor Institute
Byzantine Catholic Seminary
Pittsburgh, PA

Foreword
A Menaion is a liturgical book which contains the changeable parts of Byzantine divine
services for a given month. The volume in your hands is the sixth of a series of twelve
books for use in Byzantine Catholic parishes. Each day is provided with the following
material:
(1) Synaxarion (brief life of the saints remembered)
(2) Troparia and Kontakia
(3) Prokeimena and Alleluiaria
(4) Communion Hymn.
On major feasts, the proper antiphons (when there are any) and the Magnification and
Irmos (appointed to take the place of It is truly proper) are also included.
Texts which are contained in the Faithfuls Book published by the Byzantine Catholic
Church are reproduced with their musical settings from that book. Those texts were
translated by the Inter-Eparchial Liturgical Commission, and then set to plainchant by the
Inter-Eparchial Music Commission.
Many of the Troparia contained in this volume of the Menaion are, in fact, common texts
(i.e., they are used on more than one feast). These texts, too, come from the work of the
IELC/IEMC, as are all the Prokeimena and Alleluiaria and Communion Hymns.
The texts of the Troparia and Kontakia that are not from the above-mentioned source are
almost always taken from the Order of Matins published by the Sisters of the Order of
Saint Basil the Great, and we acknowledge these texts with gratitude.
This volume is intended to be used annually. Because of this, cantors must use the
Typikon of the Metropolitan Church to discern how materials from the Menaion are to be
combined with the Sunday Ochtoechos. The Typikon will also explain how Prokeimena
and Alleluiaria are to be combined.
May this series of volumes be a blessing for all who attend daily celebrations of the
Divine Liturgy, as well as for those who, unable to be at church each day, still wish to
pray with the Church and honor the Lord and his saints.

2 THE ENCOUNTER OF OUR LORD, GOD, AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST

WITH SIMEON AND ANNA, celebrated forty days after the Birth of the Savior on
Dec. 25. Coming to his believing and exultant people, as a light to enlighten the nations
and the glory of his people Israel. St. Sophronius of Jerusalem wrote about this feast:
Let us all hasten to meet (encounter) Christ. Everyone should be eager to join the
procession and to carry a light. Our lighted candles are a sign of the divine splendor of
the One who comes to expel the dark shadows of evil and to make the whole universe
radiant with the brilliance of his eternal Light.

3 The Synaxis of the holy prophet Simeon and the prophetess Anna, who, the one a
righteous and devout old man, and the other a widow and prophetess, were worthy to hail
the infant Jesus as the Messiah and Savior, the blessed hope and redemption of Israel,
when he had been brought to the temple to be circumcised according to the custom of the
law. All we know of them is given in the second chapter of the Gospel according to St.
Luke.

The holy prophet Zechariah, who prophesied that the Chosen People would return from

12 Our holy father Meletius, archbishop of Antioch, was elected to the patriarchal see
in 360, but within a month he was sent into exile by Emperor Constantius. Reinstated in
379, he held a council of 150 bishops and took a prominent role in the Ecumenical
Council of Constantinople (381). He was persecuted on account of the Nicene faith with
frequent exile and soon after presiding over the First Ecumenical Council of
Constantinople departed to the Lord. His virtues were celebrated with the highest praises
by Saints Gregory of Nyssa and John Chrysostom (381)

The passing of our venerable father Constantine, whose monastic name is Cyril, the
Apostle of the Slavs. This man from Thessalonica, along with his brother Methodius,
was sent by Photius the bishop of Constantinople to Moravia, where he preached the
Christian faith and devised an alphabet that they might translate the sacred books from
the Greek to the Slavic language. When they came to Rome, Cyril, who was previously
known as Constantine, was afflicted by illness. He was made a monk and the same day
slept in the Lord. (869)
The venerable Maron, hermit and wonder-worker, who lived on a mountain near
Apamea in Syria, and was very much dedicated to ardent penance and the interior life. At
his famous tomb a monastery was built. The Maronite Catholic Church takes its name
from this saint. (c. 423)

18 Our holy father Leo, Pope of Rome who, born in Etruria [i.e., Tuscany], first
stood out as a diligent deacon of Rome. He was then elevated to the chair of Peter,
where rightly and by his merit he deserved to be called "the Great. He nourished his
flock by his excellent and prudent discourse. Because of his orthodox teaching on the
incarnation of God, the true faith was vigorously affirmed through his delegates to the
Ecumenical Council of Chalcedon. He rested in the Lord at Rome, where he was buried
on this day. (461)

23 The holy martyr Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna who is honored as a disciple of

blessed John and the final witness of the apostolic age. Under the emperors Marcus
Antoninus and Lucius Aurelius Commodus, about the age of 90, he was given over to the
flames in the amphitheater at Smyrna in Asia. Before the proconsul and the whole
people, he gave thanks to God the Father because he had been deemed worthy to be
numbered among the martyrs and to receive a portion from the cup of Christ. (c.155)

the King. They brought the relic to the city of Emmesia. The second finding was much
later, during the reign of the emperor Marcianus.
Our venerable father Erasmus of the Kiev Caves. He inherited great wealth from his
parents, and spent it all on the beautification of churches. When he had nothing left and
was despised by all, including his brothers, he entered into a time of despair, from which
he was saved by the intercession of Ss. Anthony and Theodosius and the Theotokos.

spent five years as a hermit in Skete and as many across the Jordan, where he was notable
for his kindness toward the poor. Afterwards ordained a bishop, he overturned many
temples of idols and was afflicted with troubles by their attendants for a long time, until,
worthy of respect, he rested in peace with the saints. (421)
