Title: The Impact of Deped Computerization Program (DCP) Utilization in the Academic

Performance of Grade 10 Integrity in Science and Mathematics in the Third Grading

Introduction of the Study


The Department of Education (DepEd) is geared towards the tranformation of
education through the Deped Computerization Program (DCP). It promotes the right of
all citizens to take appropriate steps in making education accessible. DCP aims to
enhance the teaching-learning process and meet the challenges of the 21 st century.

This

is

the

slogan

of

DepeD

Computerization Program which stressed in the big role of technology in attaining the
goal for quality education. Education Secretary Armin Luistro said that ICT education
will be an important aspect as they formulate an effectively enhanced K to 12 BEC
curriculum. We have to set up our ICT thrust as we gradually implement the K to 12
Basic Education Reform Program. As we all know, ICT plays a very important role in
administrative functions as well as in the teaching and learning process, Luistro
explained.
According to Drew Polly (2011), Technology has been shown to positively
influence

student-learning

when

students

explore

technology-rich

tasks

that

simultaneously require them to use higher order thinking skills (HOTS), such as
analyzing or evaluating information or creating new representations of knowledge.

The computer technology has a deep impact on education. Computer education


forms a part of the school curriculum, as it is important for every individual today, to
have the basic knowledge of computers. The advantages of computers in education
include an efficient storage and performance of information, quick information
processing and very importantly the saving of paper. Computer teaching plays a key
role in the modern systems of education.
A Science and Education Institute study on Trends in Mathematics and Science
Study (TIMSS) in 2003 showed that Philippines 8th grade (2nd year high school)
students skills and competencies in Math ranked a pitiful 42nd out of 46 participating
countries while the Philippine 4th grade students placed 23rd out of 25 participating
countries. Ask a student what is his least favorite subject.Chances are youll get Math
or Science for an answer. DepEd data show that achievement rate of fourth year
students in Math dropped from 50.70% in SY 2005-2006 to 47.82% in SY 2006-2007.
The decline also happened in Science, from 39.49% to 37.98% in the same period.
Filipino students are still weak in math and science, according to results of the
Third International Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat (TIMSS-R). A report of the
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said that the 6,601 Filipino students
who took the TIMSS last year ranked 36th in both science and mathematics tests out of
a field of 38 countries. The DOST revealed that Filipino participants garnered a score of
349 and 350 in science and math respectively, way below the international average of
489 in both subjects.

In view of the foregoing, researchers were motivated to conduct an action


research to determine the impact of Deped Computerization Program (DCP) utilization
in the academic performance of Grade 10 Integrity in Science and Mathematics in the
Third Grading Period of Balas Buco Sta. Maria National High School. They believe that
the study can help to improve the academic performance of the students especially in
Science and Mathematics since in the past three years, the National Achievement Test
(NAT) result of the school failed to meet the standard.
