Brief History

In 2010, former Philippine President Benigno Aquino III expressed his desire to implement the
K-12 basic education cycle to increase the number of years of compulsory education to thirteen
years. According to him, this will "give everyone an equal chance to succeed" and "have quality
education and profitable jobs". After further consultations and studies, the government under
President Aquino formally adopted the K-6-4-2 basic education system
(official gazette.gov.ph, 2013)

As Senator Loren Legarda led the enactment into law of Republic Act 10533, the Enhanced
Basic Education Act of 2013 The Senator added that another salient feature of the law is the
use of regional or native language of learners for kindergarten and the first three years of
elementary education, instruction, teaching materials, and assessment, which is important for
children to better understand their lessons in the first years of formal school before being
introduced to a new language. The K-12 Curriculum was implemented on 2016 and has
changed the education standards of the Philippines
The STEM strand was implemented in the school year 2016-2017 alongside other strands for
the formalization of the K to 12 curriculum. This strand was indicated specifically to prepare
students who are to enroll on heavy science and mathematical programs in college as certain
programs will only consider students who took this strand. To date, any college program can be
taken regardless of your strand in SHS.

This strand offers many science and mathematics related courses alongside other general
courses . With college courses today, there are certain subjects taken from the STEM strand
that are still required to be filled in college although there are subjects as well that precipitated
learning better in college after being taken in this strand.

The conduct of this study was highly significant to senior high school STEM students primarily
because the outcomes of the study provided data about the state of their curriculum. The results
of this research paved the way to the development of new study methods in order to
accommodate the said impacts while enrolled in this strand. Researchers are students
themselves enrolled in this strand hence this is an opportunity for them to explore this field and
generate knowledge specifically on the methods involved in research. In addition to that, the
outcomes of this research were put to use in guiding them choose the right college programs as
befitted to the impacts garnered from this curriculum. And last, the researchers were able to
utilize the result of this study to influence their teachers as well as the school administration to
take measures and develop new modalities to address the negative impacts while improving the
positives.

This study shows that having an integrated curriculum helps the students in learning different
subject areas that may help them in their daily lives and future career. It enabled the students to
acquire and use the basic skills in all the specialized subjects they are taking that helped them
grow to have a positive view on learning throughout their senior year in school. Students who
take Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in their senior year have the
advantage of learning the fundamental skills in their future careers like Engineering,
Architecture, Dentistry, and many more.
Overview

This study wants to ascertain the impact of implementing such integrated study like the K-12
curriculum which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics to Grade 11
students. The Philippines started the curriculum of K-12 last 2012-2013, and it was introduced
as an extension of the year spent in school. This study focuses on the impact of the K-12
curriculum on students who are taking the academic strand of Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics and how it can help them in their career development.

Introduction

Researchers focused much of their attention in studying an integrated learning in K-12

curriculum and its impact on their career development by taking the Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics academic strand. In the year of 2012, Philippines launched its K-
12 Program where it was a broad way of reforming its simple education. In Senior High School
there are different academic tracks but this study only focuses on the impact of Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics on students who are still developing their skills on
the career they chose.

In this study researchers ascertained that integrated learning such as Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics under the K-12 curriculum has such an impact towards Grade 11
students.
